DIY Front Mount

Featured Replies

I've had a go at fitting my own front mount becuase my standard cooler had a hole in it.

I bought a focus st cooler of ebay and mounted it last weekend, today I worked out all the pipework, the job is uncomplete at the mo becuase I need to get my MAF sensor bracket welded to the ally pipe, then its just a case of piecing it altogether!

Thanks to Tokyo_phil for supplying the drawing of the bracket so I could knock something rough up at work!:)

Here's the pics:

This is the bracket that needs welded to the pipe below:

Looks a nice tidy job

Looks good mate. You getting the bumper on no problem?

had to cut a couple of bits on the inside of it, and will have to cut a bit of it on the underneath on the passengers side for the pipework going to the turbo.

oh and I don't think a will get the drip tray back on lol

Good effort mate!! I like to see people having a go themselves.

Cheers mate, turns out it was a bit trickier than I thought it was gona be, but managed to get there in the end!

hopefully I'll have the car back on the road by the middle of the week, then I'm going to phone and organise getting the turbo hybrid'ed:thumbup:

whats the rough cost of this? looks smart.

looks a nice fit, im thinking about doing this myself.

just wondered if u could tell the parts i would need including pipes etc please

The cooler was £50

I got a 2.5" pipe kit off of ebay, it was £50 (included 2straights,2 45degrees, 2 90degrees, 2 180degrees, clamps and couplers) each pipe is 600mm so its more than enough!

Also bought reducers 2.5" to 2" because of the inlet/outlet sizes on the st cooler, and x2 90degrees hoses.

All in it has cost less than £200

The pipework I have left over will be for sale if anyone is interested in having a go, pm me and I can send some pics of what I've got

i dont suppose you could pm me the link for the pipes off ebay? and also where did u buy the hoses? ebay too?

Good effort mate. Some of my mates said you were looking for me one night but i was down at GTI International. If you want a look at mine give me a shout. I managed to get it on without chopping the underneath, but mine sits different to yours by the looks of it, just slightly higher, because the bumper was to tight going on the first time, and when you stood back and looked at it you could see it pushing down, im to much of a perfectionist for that

Don't have it mate, just type in 2.5" pipe kit, it'll come up. I got the silicone hose off the www.siliconhoses.com but you can get them on ebay too.

I mate it does push the underside of the bumper down slightly, its not a big deal, just means you can't locate all of the screws, and plastic dowels. I got a couple to go back on, and I'm not that bothered, as long as the bumper looks fine from the outside

How does you pipe sit thats lead to the turbo?

  • Author

Yes, I've tried the bumper to make sure it goes back on with the way the pipework is sitting on the 1st picture. the only thing I will have to do is cut a small section out of the bumper on the passenger underside for the pipework to run over to the turbo.

As for that ebay maf sensor I'm unsure about, I made my bracket myself and it works well, the only downside about is having to wait till 2moro to get it welded to the ally pipe

nice one mate looks good, i did my DIY one other week..... well Alex did it and i helped him fit it.

One thing thou.... have you put a lip on the end of all the pipe work?

No mate I've not put any lips on the pipes. Are you asking for the reason that the might pop off?

To bo honest there isn't a whole lot of ally pipe involved, it really only 4 pieces which equates to 8 ends. but we'll see if its going to be a problem

ohh i see hmm well if i gonna have to start welding bits and bobs im not gonna be doing it lol unless you could make me one and i give you some money for doing so?:D

sorry i just found this also... Forge Motorsport | Alloy Fabrication

I've never seen the above kit before. The only thing I would be looking for is the internal size of the hole that the maf sensor clicks into, it needs to be 12mm. That kit doesnt give a size. I f you where really interested in doing it I could probably make you one.

Rekon you will need welds on the end of every pipe mate. Especially if your going to hybrid it! Ive blown one pipe off already, and mine have lips on the ends of every join.

Yea i didnt like the way the bumper sat so moved it up to let it slide over no bother. Was holding it out at the wings to and the panel gaps were out. Depends how fussy you are i suppose. There a good intercooler to use, maybe slightly big but you can make it work. Only other problem might be the plastic end caps if your going to run lots of boost, but i wouldnt think it would be a problem on a fabia.

How has it popped off? What kind of clamp/clips are you using to hold the pipes to the silicone hose?

despite being a complete mechanical n00b I quite fancy having a go at this :D

I understand what all the bits do  Can someone explain what bits fit in where. i.e. could someone draw a "circuit diagram" tye thing :o

I have the same clamps as you, but what you will find is that if your not running an oil catch can mod, all the oil wil get in the pipe work and pop off the pipes when under boost. Its not a question of weather it will happen, just when. On standard boost you might get away with it for a while.

Personaly i wouldn't use welds as it looks crap and if not done smmoth will make small hols in the silicone, been there done it, so know what happends. Take the pipe work to a exhaust place or somthing and they will put a lip on the ends.

Cheers mate I'll take all of the ally parts to an exust place 2moro when I'm on my lunch at work.

Will these flanges definately hold them on?
