One question - Can this mod actually damage anything engine wise?

I sincerely doubt it. All you're changing is a bit of pipe after all

(normal disclaimers apply... If you blow your car up, don't come looking for me!)

Tried an unscientific experiment this morning. I disconnected the inlet pipe at the air box end (the union with the cross head screw) which should in theory give the engine access to an infinite supply of air (no sucking through a straw effect). Bad news is, apart from a huge increase in induction noise, I could detect no discernable improvement in performance. Have to say I'm not surprised. Seems pretty unlikely that VW would do all the development work on an engine only to strangle its breathing with an inlet tube too small in diameter.

I'm still open to being convinced by others who fit the Cupra tube, but I won't be rushing round to my local SEAT dealer just yet...

in reply tho, does the inlet pipe on either the standard or cupra tdi actually taper slightly?

if the initial 'hole' to the outside is wider than that into the turbo ,then air will be delivered at a greater pressure/density into the turbo than it is on the outside of the car (good news obviously).

this could explain why people seem to be getting better results from the upgraded pipe than from simply removing it altogether.

you dont need a huge decrease in pipe diameter along its length to create quite a large cross-section decrease (and therefore higher density due to same amount of air in smaller space), just look at the difference in the amount of pizza when you upgrade from a 10" to a 12" (almost 50% more from my old school maths and stuff -pi*r squared).

to say that you dont think they'd have spent as much time designing the pd130 only to be let down by the air intake is a fair point until you remember that they also didnt put in a re-map, fmic and other goodies which we all know DO actually improve performance (although i'm still waiting for funds for mine!)

i think they are gradually introducing more 'standard mods' as they roll out 'faster' cars like the ibiza cupra pd1 60 and so i have a tendency to think that this mod may actually be effective.

this could all be bo**ocks of course-i'm no engineer and i dont work for VAG so i dont actually know , but i always order a 12" pizza!! :D

You have to remember that if you were just sucking air directly into the airbox from the engine bay.... itll be warm air that wont do the engine any favours.

Im on JBS's RR next sunday and will be able to compare results with my last run... i dont expect more power (would be nice tho) ;) but i do expect to see a change in the graph shape displaying a slightly quicker spoolup and a flatter curve.

Removing the pipe from the air box will make it sound ace, but won't do you ANY favours with regard to performance... I did this on my Polo GTi as I loved the way it sounded lol

BUT on the vRS, the pipe leads to a really nice scoop at the front, so cold air is always available to the airbox...

Putting a wider pipe on will allow more of this cold air into the airbox.

It's wierd how so many of you are doubters!

I'll say it again... SEAT Sport wouldn't have put it on their PD160 if they didn't think it was necessary! A lot of us are running 170+ BHP, so I think it's even more necessary for us!

Stop your griping and just go and buy the 2 bits from SEAT. It's only

HI

I've been thinking about the suggestions to cut the flap out the way to encourage more air through. Well here's my 2p's worth. I have seen several con rods off diesel that had swallowed some water and it wasn't nice. Air as you know compresses and a diesel compresses it a lot (about 20:1) and this is what causes combustion, however water doesn't compress it just bends the con rods, , which isn't good. Anyway I was thinking the flap may be there to limit the amount of water that enters the system ( a little doesn't hurt) but if it rains really hard, or the car ahead throws up lots of water or you go through a ford you may have problems. As I have mentioned before I'm interested in this mod, but as I'm

b: Very unlucky

I'll be leaving the flap on the Seat tubes if I get them.

Unless you drown your car the airbox if kept clean should be ableto cope with any water ingestion. There are 2 drain holes in the bottom of it, so any water being sucked/blown in should only get as far as the air box. The only problems Ive found in VERY heavy rain and spray was the filter got wet and hence airflow was impeded. But the top of the air box was still as dry as a bone.

The thread is useless without pics... PICS PLEASE!!! LoL

Sounds like a good and cheap mod, anyone thought abt the warrenty (validates it?)or insurance modifications section (state it?)?

got my seat parts and will hopefully be able to fit it tonight (weather allowing for his) I will try and posts some pictures and let you know what difference there is over the standard setup.

as for you question mikey warrenty, they my get funny about this or they may not I dont think they will as it is VAG parts at the end of the day. As for insurance I think you might have to tell them as it may increase you bhp.....but...dont hold me to this, I really do not think that it will be noticed by anyone. At the end of the day it's your car and you are the one that chooses to take the chance/risk.

Arrived and fitted today. :D

First impression is the reduced smoke - especially hard accleration in fourth etc.

Maybe a bit more responsive and smoother, but this maybe the colder weather and a fresh tank of BP.. so will wait and see!

Easy fitting though - took less than 5 mins.

PICS!!!

lol

(and where the hell are my parts? how have you lot got yours before me!?!)

PICS!!!

lol

(and where the hell are my parts? how have you lot got yours before me!?!)

Matt could charm parts from a brass monkey.

well its not what you know its who you know.. :D

lol..

I did order the parts over three weeks ago.. phoned Saturday but not arrived then had a call this morning and they were in.

According to the similar post on SCnet a batch of the parts arrived in the UK last week..

I've got them on order for mine.

Not to worried about the performance, what i'd like is to reduce the smoke during hard kick down.

The one click remap is excellent, but does kick out a 'triffle' more smoke when pushed (a fog bank when pushed hard)

Wouldn't be without it though - put the car back to standard last week for it's annual service and it was like driving a slug.

The news from Matt (FabiaTDI) looks promising, just waiting now until it arrives.........

Just phoned Seat in Leeds to order mine the Sales guy was a little perplexed!!

Said he would call me wednesday, will see?

Know what you mean about the One Click had mine on a couple of days

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlo

let me know as york have no idea of the part

Fitted my last night, first impressions are these:

It does pull from lower down better than before (but maybe this might just be that it's cold this morning). It will pull in 3rd from 1k without kicking up any fuss. Also it does sound just the little bit more gruff when givin it some welly and one else found this or is it just me?

It does smoke less on full charge than before which is a good thing for those behind me :D (though this is with a green panel filter too so I'm not sure what it would be like with the standard air filter.)

My only concern is that it seems a little too close to the engine block that with engine movement it may cause rubbing, Colin how does yours seem?

I can't see it rubbing... It's the same engine bay as the Ibiza after all...

Thanks for the pic! I can't wait to fit mine!

It rubs slightly on the battery box and could possibly come in contact with the rubber pipe on the side of the block with the movement.. but its nothing to be concerned about :)

I rang my local Seat dealer today out of curiosity, and they told me that Seat has no plans to import more of these parts anytime soon as they need them for production of the new cupras. He definitely knew which bits I was on about as I gave him the part numbers and he gave me the descriptions of them, and said he'd let me know when he could get hold of them but didn't expect it to be any time soon. Anybody else in the same boat?

mine still aint got a clue about the part lol

mine still aint got a clue about the part lol

:rofl::rofl:

the biggest restriction on the inductions system is the air flow meter. it maybe worth removing the metal gauzes from it. these cause a huge pressure drop in the air flow. if you aren't happy about removing both, just remove the rear one.

:rofl::rofl:

its not bloody funny lol i want them but my dealer cant even find the airbox on the cupra tdi lol
