Pics of my Boxster and opinions wanted on wheels

Featured Replies

Further to my thread about selling the A6 I thought it was about time I posted up some details of it's replacement.

It's a 2003 Boxster S in Midnight Blue Pearl, extras include xenons, PSM, sports seats, metropole blue leather interior including leather covered dash and upgraded stereo with 6 disc changer and seperate amp.

So far I'm really enjoying driving it and haven't made many changes or made plans for many. I've bought a new set of genuine mats and I've replaced the front number plate holder as it was cracked. I've recently bought a Becker Cascade sat nav / bluetooth / MP3 headunit which looks very OEM.

The only other thing I plan to change is the wheels as I think the stock 17's look too small. I bought some new Boxster S 18's which I've just had stripped and wet painted in a metallic silver. However I've also picked up a set of 18" GT3 / Sport design split rims (which I bought for the tyres) that I wasn't planning on keeping but I've seen some really nice refurbed examples in grey with a silver rim. Now I'm confused which to go for, especially as I haven't seen the new Boxster S wheels on a 986 model like mine. So i'm after your help, all opinions welcome even if that opinion is none of the wheels!

Below are some photos from when I bought the car (I'll post some proper ones after it's been detailed) and some photo's of the wheels.

New Boxster S Wheel Looks better in the metal and is slightly dished:

Nice, very nice !!

Sell the 17's and keep both the GT3 split rims (but get them refurbed in grey and silver) and the Boxster S alloys

I'm not sure what to do as I've never really been a fan of split rims but after seeing that picture I really like them in grey and silver. I'm trying to get a photo of them on a car to give me a better idea.

I don't think the standard Boxster S 17's are worth very much TBH so they probably just go in the corner of my garage.

Nice motor

I like the new boxter s wheels but those GT3 rims in the 2-tone colours are the bomb:cool:

It clearly has to be the two-tone GT3.

Personally I think the split rim type look a little 'fussy' on the smaller Boxster, on account of the bolt holes and more intricate design I think.

I have seen them on 986s locally and think the cleaner lines of the 'S' alloys look far better. But I totally agree with your original call - the current 17s do make it look under wheeled :)

All IMO :)

Cheers,

Steve

I'd like to see them on the car too, think they would look quite good.

Slightly off topic but does the roof work OK. Bloke across the road used to have one until the roof started doing the hokey cokey. Not good especially when it was raining hard one day.

Not the best, but:

You see, I think the 'S' ones just look 'right'

Nice looking car Eddy, but think about tyre cost. Also the 17" will give a smoother ride :)

I quite like the original 16s...

However the S wheels look great too, not a fan of the splits...

Lovely car though Ed!

Roof works fine and I've been using it alot.

Unfortunately they're 19" otherwise I'd have them, can get them in 18" as reps but I'm really not a fan of reps.

I don't like the GT3's on that silver boxster but I think they would look alot different on dark car and painted silver/grey.

I think the S wheels will look better as the spokes go all the way to the rim edge and will make them look bigger.

One problem with split rims in general is that they always seem to look smaller due to the spokes only being able to go to the inner split of the wheel. Making the wheel a darker grey innards will also give a subjective impression of being smaller.

You are fortunate that you could get 2 wheels of each with tyres on and put them on each side of the car at the tyre fitter. Have a good look at both sides, decide and then get the 2 tyres fitted to the preferred wheels :)

I'm sure the small cost of this will be worth it.....

I'm leaning towards the 5 spoke wheels at the moment as I think they will give a more modern look. I'm hoping to get something arranged this weekend regarding tyres so I can get them on.

I do like the split rims, they are tasty, but only on certain cars. I think you'd have to fit them to find out whether they truly suit the car. Try some photoshoppery from an expert on here?

I agree the S wheels look more modern but it depends on the final look you're trying to achieve. Some modern wheels on older cars just don't go.

You could keep the 17's for track day action with a set of semi slicks?:D

love the split rims that are coloured but really dont like boxsters they are pants

The wheels that I really wanted I couldn't find for a reasonable price were a standard option on the 986 are the Carrera wheels below:

There's no thanks button on your post so I've had to post it instead. Thanks!

Edit: The thanks button appeared after posting this.

I now have a pic of the silver/grey GT3 wheels on a Boxster:

It's put me off them TBH. I like them but I think they look a bit small and also think something with a bit of dish would look better on the rear.

I like them actually, I think they would look good on a dark blue car.

Yep quite agree, definitely think the S rims now!

And yeah, for those to start to work, you'd need a dish on the rears...

Steve

I like the GT3 wheels, but then I am biased.

Here are what they look like in standard silver, on my old Boxster.

Hopefully the S wheels will be getting fitted with F1 A's on Sunday, not sure if I'll fit the wheels straight away or put them on when it gets detailed next month. I really want to see them on the car with the new centre caps too but it would be nice to have them waxed and sealed before they go on. :rubchin:

There's not much that needs modding on this car so I think our Bongo will be receiving the majority of my modding attention. :D

My 2p worth:

I was looking at Boxters before I got the .:R and I wanted one with these wheels too. They suit the car perfectly as its a simple design, they show the brakes behind clearly, and they are very easy to clean

Might it be worth you selling both sets of 18" rims and holding back till you find a reasonable set of Carrera wheels? The wait would definately be worth it and the search would certainly keep you occupied for the meantime :D

Looking at your previous cars, you don't do things by halves and I get the feeling that you'd choose one of the 18" rims in your original post, and then change them to the Carrera wheels in the future anyway.
