Standard of driving?

Featured Replies

Today was the icing on the cake.

As a joke when we both drive and find someone in the middle or outside lane for no reason I normally say "oh they must be turning right 5 miles down the road" this being for people in the outside lane. Well today I've been shocked. A guy in work entered the motorway on the way home in the middle lane. He continued in the middle lane at a slow speed resulting in other drivers flashing their lights, sounding horns and bad lauguage trying to make him get into the inside lane.

Now for the best bit. His reply to being in the middle lane was he's not going to st helens. This may sound strange but 2 junctions down the motorway the inside lane becomes a slip road for the exit to st helens. The other two continue further down.

I'm speachless.

See that quite a bit, notably on the M4 through Newport eastbound, trucks will move to middle lane about 2 miles clear of where the left lane peels off!

Which is why we need traffic officers not cameras.

This used to drive me round the twist when I used to commute between Cardiff and Bristol, especially the people who got in the middle lane at Magor because they didn't want to pull off jct 24 and then from jct 24 to the tunnels.

I saw a guy last night on the A42 who was driving along in the outside lane, I came up behinds in the left hand lane and nearly undertook him so he sped up then pulled in front of me and slowed down. So I overtook him and then he pulled back out behind me. He repeated this several times as other cars came up behind him. He also had his front and rear fog lights on, even though it was sunny...

I quite fancy some ben hur style blades on the wheels...

Last Friday I was Southbound on the M6 around Lancaster, inside lane cruise set at 75. Slowly slowly I am gaining on a Corsa in the middle lane, nothing in front of me as far as I can see. Flash the lights, but the Corsa stays put, knock off the cruise, indicate, out to the outside lane pass the Corsa, (17 - 18 year old male driving) indicate, back to the inside lane and resume cruise. I watched in the mirror to see the next 2-3 cars carry out the same move. After a few miles later we pass a slower lorry, the Corsa passes the lorry, but stays in the middle lane.:rotz:

It's time to put motorways in the driving test.

Sometimes the matrix signs say 'return to the left after overtaking' and you will see quite a few drivers move over.

Was overtaken by a passat in a 30 uphill double whites into a left hand bend. Would not of minded but he came from two lorrys back and passed another car in front, all on dbl whites.

Imagine then my frustration, being in a fully laden roomster with less power as I followed him for the next 20 miles over moorland roads, every corner he cut and I still had to slowdown sticking to the correct side of the often solid lines...

Wish I'd got 2000W headlamps to illumiate the foul language in that cabin. I just pulled over in the end, figuring he was inept enough to stick it in a wall at some point and thus save me the trouble...

I recall saying... it's not just bmw drivers as the overtake began...

It's also the forth time I've been overtaken in this 30 then been overtly held up later. I don't mind when it's busy, just when it's quiet, really messes up the drive :)

I personally wish for the day some ****** overtakes in a unsafe place and then loses control down the road, and crashes, on aquiet road so I can pull over and help him/her pass over to the next world... if ya get my drift... lmao

Severe injury to himself only - fair enough

Death - a little on the Draconian side IMO :rotz:

Hope you called him an asshole2.gif

And nice to see your Roomster piss2.gif all over his Passat !

I do not have the usual morale constraints most people have ;)

Once while driving in Scotland on a very icy winters day I went past a car on it's roof in a ditch, at which point some chav in a saxo decided to overtake me and go shooting off into the distance. 5 minutes later I passed the chav standing at the side of the road next to his saxo which was sticking out of a ditch. Made me feel all warm inside.

I would have slowed down and say 'You need some help??' the **** would have said 'Yes' or something to that effect and I would have said 'You better start praying mate you're gonna need it' Then drove off... lmao

Tell me about it, about 15 minutes later I attempted to turn left at a T junction and sailed straight on despite having braked and turned the wheel, fortunately I was only doing about 10mph and I was going across the top of the T.

The night before it had snowed, thawed a bit, rained and then froze. There were big sheets of ice all over the place. Took me 10 minutes to get out of the hotel car park, which wasn't gritted after chiselling the ice of the windscreen. All in all a rather scary experience.

im sure if i drove my lorry at 56mph (flat out) in the middle lane that the old bill would be along soon enough and there be enough who ha from the other motorist. But car drivers seem to sit there and only the odd driver will react to them sitting in the middle lane. The common offenders seem to be (imho) young women with their seat so far forward that the steering wheel is rubbing their chest and their heads are over the steering wheel, oap's and foreign looking people (no doubt passed the indian driving test of driving forward 100m and then reverse back, well done you passed).

Best excuse ive heard till what ive just read from OP is lane one is for lorries as they have the tracks in place to steer the lorrys along.... I think they mean where the road surface has become damaged from overloaded foreign lorries..

sms - I seem to remember a post about that very excuse about "tracks" being used by IAM members

i personally cant find a problem with lane 1 in car or lorry, but another excuse ive heard was lane one is only for entering and exiting the motorway and also lane 1 is for lorries only :o

Exactly! No excuse really!

My car tramlines like hell, so I actually take advantage of the "damage" the lane 1

One of the problems in wet weather is that water tends to pool in the tracks and so traffic ahead in lane 1 kicks up a lot of spray and reduces forward visibility. If it's not inconveniencing anyone, I'd rather be in lanes 2 or 3 and out of the direct wall of spray :)

Chris

Again with the IAM ignoring the highway code....

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles' date=' you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You [b']MUST NOT[/b] drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

[Laws MT(E&W)R regs 5, 9 & 16(1)(a), MT(S)R regs 4, 8 & 14(1)(a), and RTA 1988, sects 35 & 186, as amended by TMA 2004 sect 6]

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting what's written but if the road ahead isn't clear, ie there's something in lane 1 chucking up spray, then I don't have to be in lane 1?

Btw, I don't represent the IAM :)

Chris

Slightly o/t, but do you have an on-line HC source that still quotes individual rules rather than full pages, or is that a bit of copy and paste Chris?
