Full Service Required

Recommended Posts

Hi mate, I bought my VRS about 7 weeks ago, and put her in for a full service at a local VW specialist... Westside Motors in Woodford. My previous car was a 2.0 VW Bora which I had for nearly 3 years. Before that I had a golf GTI 8valve mark3 for nearly six years. I have had all my servicing and repairs done there since buying the golf and am delighted with their service. I had full service on my VRS including diagnostic fault reading, Diesel treatment, new front discs and pads, cleaning of my k&n air filter, brake fluid change, oil, pollen filter etc etc, It came in at £450 inclusive of vat and labour.

Not the cheapest, but not the dearest either. And I have a rapport with them after all these years... Hope to help.

The car is nearly 5 yrs old so it needs new spark plugs, oil change, change of brake fluid and maybe new brake pads. So how much you do you think it will cost.

spark plugs on a diesel

Brake fluid should be every 2 years, unless it has already had a coolant change during cam belt/water pump replacement it should be due for that at 5 years.

You want to get the service done based on its age, mileage and its previous service history.

Personally I would go to a recommended VAG independent garage who know what they are doing on cars within the VAG group and use the recommended filters & oils.

To the OP: I assume that as your tag is Bradfordfabia you are in West Yorkshire like me

I've just had a full (40k) service and brake fluid change at D M Keith (Skoda main dealers) in Leeds on a 2001 Fabia 1.4 16 v (petrol) elegance estate for £270. I found them to be helpful and efficient, but that may just be coz they want me to come back.

I went to the stealers as I had just bought the car so wanted the full low down on some faults that I am currently having some "discussions" about with the dealers who sold it to me.

There are two independent VAG garages in Leeds that I know of (one off King Lane, and one near the Audi dealers, I can't recall their names but I am sure you can find them on a search on here or google) and there is one in Pudsey called Audicare. I have been recommended to both the ones in Leeds and will be going to the one off King Lane in the future (simply coz it is closest to me).

Interestingly the main dealers are currently undercutting the two Leeds independent VAG garages I know of on cambelt changes, but not if you ask them to replace the water pump at the same time.

I wouldn't recommend Nationwide.

Hope this helps

I tend not to use dealers if i can help it (never had a great experience with any dealer of any brand) and i would never dream of taking my car to somewhere like Nationwide or Kwick Fit for one of their services.

Find a VAG Specialist that knows the cars, uses genuine parts, and is willing charge a fair price that will save you a good sum of money.

I travel 1 hour to visit Unit 18 for work on my car.

My 60k service last month was £350 for

Cambelt change

Water pump change

Fuel filter change

Oil filter change

Brake fluid change

Coolant change

Oil change

Screen wash top up

Full check over of the vehicle.

And i was stood over the car the entire time asking questions and getting good advice.

It may have took me an hour and cost about £15 in fuel, but the money i saved and the service i got made it worth the effort.

£15 for a Haynes Manual. All the jobs you list are relatively simple DIY tasks.

Very true, but buying a PITT or a car lift is a few quid, then a tool chest with the right tools in..... and i don't have access to a stamp for the service book either.

If you can get all that for the remainder (£335) then i'll do my own next time.

Hello bradfordfabia,

Do it all yourself and only pay for parts/materials and some special bits of kit.

Self bleed brake kit, gearbox M16 splined socket, 17m/m sump-plug socket, 6sided socket for oil filter replacement.

Engine oil (5litres), gearbox and steering oil, spray-can white grease,oil-air-pollen-fuel filters, 1 litre brake fluid, rags, axle stand, trolley jack.

Might have missed the odd thing, but it's all do-able DIY.

Re-set radio with code found inside cover of Radio/CD manual, and one-touch window switch, run windows up and down a few times, that's it, no mystery in it.

Once you have done it, you'll realise how easy it all was.

If you only do a couple of things, and let the garage do the rest, perhaps the camshaft belt etc unless you are or know a knowledgeable DIY person/mechanic, it'll save your money.

Good luck. Ian. 10/09/2009 :D:thumbup:

Er rather not, I thought the car had spark plugs lol. Thinking of going to Fletcher Bros in Halifax, they used to be a Skoda dealer . I usually go to DM Keith's in Bradford I have bought my last 3 cars from they and had service,MOT's and had cambelt done they but the price will be high.

Hello bradfordfabia,

Point taken, and understood, you'll never learn if you let others step-in for you.

Start off on small stuff, ie:- air filter, pollen filter, fill washer bottle, it all adds to your bill if the garage does it.

Best regards. Ian. 15/09/2009.

If you are in Bradford. there is a well respected ex Skoda dealer in Steeton, twixt Keighley and Crosshills.

A few of the lads at work use him, as I have, he is fully clued up, not dear by any means, and very helpful.

bradfordfabia, why not try VWexpressfit in halifax, just below the shay stadium (well, i say stadium - it will be when finally finished...... lol). i take it that it's also due for MOT time too. i was recently driving one of their courtesey cars due to my furby having some work done under warranty, and emblazened on the side was MOT for £15.00. when calling them to check on my car, the telephone message at the time (early august) stated that you could have an MOT & service for £99.00. ok, not exactly sure what the service would cover, but it might be worth a call. all mechanics are VAG trained as they are owned by the same company as halifax VW (was lightcliffe motors), but they operate basically out of a garage here, so overheads are lower and therefore prices are cheaper. the other thing as well even with a basic £99 service & MOT, you get a main dealer stamp i presume too.
