What component speakers did you replace the fronts with? (no amp setup)

Featured Replies

I've read quite a few posts on front car speakers, but all I want to do is order a decent pair of components (prefer under £80) that with the adapter is easy to replace and not to deep, same goes for tweeter installation. Can anyone recommend a good tried and tested set to buy that sound great without the need for an amp? (I use a Kenwood HU).

Many thanks in advance

The last owner of mine installed Focal speakers in the front, They sound rubbish and until I took the door card off I actually thought it was still a standard setup! Then he spent maybe all of £20 on some gash sonys for the rear OEM positions?? Don't think he really knew what he was doing.

Stupidest thing is, I looked up the Focal model and they're like £250 worth! I bet the last owner was gutted the first time he played something through them..

something like the Focals would need an amp running them to make them sound good, they are VERY VERY good speakers usually

im just going to replace mine with some Alpine SXE-1750s which dont even have a crossover, but im running the OE headunit so i wouldnt have the power to drive anything better

Thanks Brun, Now I've gotta spend more cash! lol I was happier just thinking they were rubbish.... but now I know they have potential! ;)

sell em on and buy some cheaper ones, probs make some money out of it

if the skoda shares the same speakers as the ibiza fr... ive heard the standard ones are quite good when amp'd. as in, standard hu volume setting of 30... and still clear :o. please correct me if i am wrong.

i fitted Focal 165 (something) in the front of my mk4 Golf - I believe the Fabia uses the same size?

stuck them in, dynamatted the front doors as much as possible, and wired them to the existing oem setup.

They sound fantastic, even un-amped, lots of low end thump, with added clarity too.

I paid about £100 for them brand new, well worth the upgrade.

In my Fabia, I've so far replaced the headunit with a cheapy (£100) Kenwood one, and that sounds really quite impressive using the factory speakers. Worth while upgrading one or the other mate

Whats this? I suspect its a type of sound proof? Is there any guides about this??

its a thick sheet that gets stuck to the inside of the door to help improve the sound, also helps cut road noise etc.

fairly easy to fit, you could probably get a kit from ebay or a car stereo dealer etc.

I've amped the standard front speakers to about 30wrms from my Infinity Basslink, been going strong for 18 months now and sound great imo, changing speakers is such a hassle.

how does a basslink work ?

how does a basslink work ?

its an active sub with the amp and sub built into one box but also has the option to add a 4 channel amp into the side

Google Dynamat matey,

It's soundproofing for cars. It's basically big sheets of sticky aluminium coated material. Makes the speakers sound much deeper and powerful. Also has the added benefit of cutting out lots of road noise too.

I'd not bother changing the speakers on their own. The weaker parts of the system are the power output and the lack of a modern digital EQ or similar on the HU... In comparison, the standard front speakers in the VRS, at least, can take a tad more power.

The standard rear speakers are a different pair of pants however....

I'm running standard speakers off a Becker Grand Prix and it sounds loads better than the same speakers running off the standard H/U. I've got a load of uprated stuff sat in the loft waiting to go in but it's too much effort at the moment!

So anyone got any recommendations for component speakers that are a good replacement without amp or sub setup?

FLI Audio Integrator COMP6 - Speakers

I bought these, running from an Alpine H/U. Bit of a **** to fit. Had to cut out the original speaker from the surround and use that as the adaptor to fit them to the door. Sound good though for the money, even just straight from the H/U. The tweeters are almost a perfect fit for the factory tweeters too, and come with crossovers and wiring kits in the box.

Next plan is to amp them, get them closer to their RMS value.

Cheers Mikey will give them a look, when you said you had to cut out the original speaker from the surround and use that as the adaptor to fit, I don't know what you mean, but wouldn't the MK4 Golf adapters work with these speakers making it an easier fit?

Nope. You aren't going to get a "great" improvement in sound just by replacing the speakers alone, simply because the standard speakers are not that bad and are matched quality-wise to the standard head unit.

To get a "great" improvement in sound you will need component speakers and an amp.

If you aren't prepared to upgrade more than your speakers, I would save your money and stick with what you have.

There are no shortcuts to getting a "great" sound unfortunately.

Upgrade path:

1) Component speakers.

2) Amplifier

3) Head unit

4) Quality cabling & soundproofing.

Then consider 5) a sub.

Whether you fit a sub. or not, only after you change 1) to 4) will you get anywhere near a much better sound.

Understand that speakers only put out the signal which is sent to them by the amp.

so unless you improve the quality of the amp. you aren't going to hear the benefit no matter how good the speakers are.

Had mk4 speaker adaptors, but they werent quite deep enough

All I done was cut the speaker out of the surround its glued into, got 4 plastic tubes to use as spacers and long (60mm) screws to attach it all to the door (and they only just cleared the window runner).

Hardest part though was probably de-soldering the wiring from the inside of the surround so you could still use the OEM connector, and putting terminals on some new wire and attaching it all.

Sounds a bit complicated, but TBH, its a piece of **** once you have done one side. Wish i took pics of it all though :(

Only one I have is this:

Thought I would post on this thread rather than start a new one, I know some people have mentioned the quality of standard speakers, but are they good enough to live with or would you need to upgrade to get any proper enjoyment?

I can only compare to my 1996 Astra (which is **** so must be better than them) and my mums 56 plate Peugeot which sounds pretty good but not at really loud volume. My Dads Audi A4 has Bose speakers so I know it wont be as good as them! Plus when I test drove the fabia last week I did stick the radio on but that doesnt really give a proper test...Cheers

Depends what your after really. The OEM setup in my last Fabia (Elegance, but same as vRS) was great when used with a better headunit. So basically the AMP's aren't great in the OEM head units. On the better ones (including the vRS's Symphony unit) You can run an external amp which is my distant aim.

A cheaper way is just to change out the head unit though, but you'll loose the nice OEM dash radio look.

If you want serious bass or full on "HiFi" then you'll probably need to change them, but they're more than upto the job of just playing some tunes while you motor around.

Cheers mate, from what you say I will probably get a new head unit with input for iphone :) Just need to find the right car to buy now! Seen a couple of black vRS's at good prices so hopefully have one just after new years!

I hate to **** on anybody's fireworks but Bose speakers are considered pretty crap actually! They really are living on their name from the old 800 series of hi-fi and pro kit which were revolutionary in their time. The current "Acoustimass" hi-fi's use cheap and nasty speakers in the little surrounds and the subs are not even amplified and just go "woof". Everything sounds very impressive to begin with........and then you try living with them for a while. The first time you hear some >real< quality kit you realise how much smoke and mirrors and marketing hype is involved.

The Dynaudio option on the new Vdubs however is excellent.......... :-)

Not if you get one of these...

But they're not particularly cheap. It's what I've got and I really like it. A lot more than all the previous high end Alpines I've had before. Bluetooth integration is basic, iPod is very user friendly but the control unit to run an iPod is another £130 or so on top!
