Cars you don't see on the roads any more

Featured Replies

Every now and again you'll see a car that catches your eye because what was once a run of the mill vehicle is now a rarity. It needn't be anything particularly stunning , just something you might have forgotten about.

This was this week's sighting - an MG Metro Turbo - 93bhp of british engineering at it's best.

There can't be many of these that haven't dissolved or exploded but this looked to be in first class condition.

What oddities have you seen?

Saw a mint-looking Maestro Turbo now so very long ago, being driven by a lad who was probably younger than it was...!

Ford Serrias

Non cosworth ones

They seem to all have disapperaed.

And strangle enough Ford Mondeos- they seem to be few and fair between- well around me any way

I saw one sierra and a second one which was a 4x4 sapphire that really really moved. Must admit I did think, I've not seen one of those for a while on both occasions.

There are still a fair few citroen BX's around, but the ones I used to see all the time, but see much less these days are nova's and renault 5's

I just had a quick nose - 0-60 in 6.7 seconds!

That's bloody rapid even by modern standards.

There's a guy who has previously run a Maestro Turbo in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship

Had a massive shunt on the first meet of this year and hasn't made any other rounds - apparently parts are a little hard to come by!

Brilliant to watch it mixing it was so called purpose built newer machinery though (or as he calls them "cheque-book racers"

seems to be relatively cheap too....for one's that don't work ;)

Back on original topic I find seeing original Mini's on the road a rare treat!

There's an old fella who's parked in the same place in the car park of a Country Park near us every time we go, sat in the driver's seat of his white Granada Scorpio Cossie, which itself is sat on some of these:

...which I think were actually off the Sierra???

Not seen any Cavaliers recently (shame - they are great cars imho), or Novas (which just aren't!).

They look more like late Crapi wheels than Sierra

How right you are - as soon as you said it, I remembered they were off a Capri Laser!

I knew they weren't off the Granada, though! :D

I've seen a couple at classic car shows but not seen any of the later boxy ones on the road for ages.

You're getting there slowly !

These were the Laser wheels

The one's you are thinking of were on the 280

I was sat beside a Renault 4 last night, Reasonable condition for it's age!

No, the later Lasers definitely had those wheels too. Although I don't know where the offset RS badge in the centre comes into it...

I sold my Cortina just over a week ago, the first time that I've not owned one since 1985.

Purchased a Sierra 1.8 LX last year, retro-fitted electric/heated seats, electrics for the sunroof, electric mirrors, alloy wheels and remote locking.

When I was in Praha Recently, I saw loads of old skodas, obviously, and also spotted a really nice Orange Cortina like this one

I actually saw one of those last week!

Estelles' and Favorits - being a Skoda forum. I only spot these once in a rare while. One or two Favorits around by us which are ok, but I haven't seen an Estelle on the road for a bit.

Peugeot 309's seem to have died out, though still see a few 205's. Escorts seem to be dieing off - there used to be a lot about a few years ago.

There's a house not far from here that had an XR2 on the drive when I moved in over 5 years ago with signs in the window saying "not for sale". At the time it looked pretty tidy for an '86 car but since then it's not moved and now sports green mould , brown rust and flat tyres.

They recently put a "for sale" sign in the window.

The Brooklands wheels were 15" I believe, the wheels pictured are a 14" I think, from memory they might just be an option for the lower models. Can't quite remember though.

I would love a Montego Turbo with a T16 conversion... With some 16" MGF wheels :D

Sorry, back on topic, my contribution would be... The mk2 Astra

I saw 2 in the same week not so long ago!

Citroen Visa GTi.

I had one back in the mid 80's, and it was absolutely awesome. Same engine as in the Pug 205 1.6 GTi, but being lighter, it was even quicker, and some say it handled better too!

Apparently there are only 12 left taxed for road use in the UK now. :rotz:

I'd love to own one again.
