Tips for re-fitting boot lid trim?

Featured Replies

There was something rattling around in my boot lid so I took the plastic trim off to find what it was and take it out. Turns out it was one of the metal clips that holds the trim on.

Anyway, I'm struggling to get it back on - it is a right old juggling act holding it up with the pull strap through, and I can't seem to get the two corners into the window in order to align up with the other bits at the side of the rear window. :(

So, any tips or methods to do this? There seem to be posts on taking it off, but not methods for replacing!

yeah, someone must have some tips, I found refitting a right pain too.

thinking I need to do it again soon.

the lower trim should be the first bit to go on, then the sides and top sections

Can't remember having any problems getting mine back on.

I think i lined it up with the help of the missus, guiding the 2 bits that go around the window in, then pushed into place. Sure I could see the one clip on the side enough to make sure it was lined up. after one was clicked in i just gently thumped around the edge until secure

found both taking off and replacing rather easy, although it might be more of a struggle with one person

Best way of taking it off is to lever something flat down the bit by the lock as far as it will go, then pull down. Pops off without risk of snapping anything :) Although you already did that!

Definitely 2 people, did mine on my own, what a palaver.

Fitted window top and then side edges first, then a clenched fist to bang around rest of perimeter trim.

I removed mine as washer-pipe popped off, but to avoid this removal task again, I cut an opening in tail-gate panel and placed a self-tapper held plastic cover, over hole.

Good-luck.

That probably explains why I ended up breaking a lower clip a few times as if you sort the top out first, the lower clips are at the wrong angle to "want" to enter the cut outs on the tailgate. Due to my ignorance and lack of patience, I now have a couple of broken clip mounting points that I've tried to sort out with small blocks of wood.

As for bits of metal rattling around behind this cover, well I gave up on mine last time I tried to fit new clips (on the 9N Polo there are three types of clips) - and a few weeks later, a broken part of a clip ended up dropping out into the boot - so if its only a broken clip rattling around that is annoying you, then it might be that patience is the answer!

I think that the best advice is never to need to work on this cover, and if you MUST, then try to plan doing this work when the weather is HOT - but I suppose lift is not that simple. First time I needed to remove the cover was on my daughter's 6K Ibiza it was winter - that job went okay, cover back intact, but I had very very sore hands!

Try folding down the back seats and working from the inside, with the boot lid CLOSED.

That's the kind of thinking outside the box I'm after, hehe!

Thanks. So I have to take the rest of the trim off from round the window? what a faff! I'll try again tomorrow!
