Locked out

Featured Replies

Not sure it's best to reply to this post...but if anyone could help via PM I would be grateful!!

I'm locked out of the car, battery has gone flat.

Now it's my own fault, as the car is totally de-locked, so I can't just stick the key in and manually open the doors/boot.

So other than putting a brick through a window is there another way to either get some power into the car or pop the bonnet?

if the deadlocks are activated and you have no power or the lock to release them then I suspect even the AA will have to break a window to get it, as there is no other way to open the door without power.

Is there a slim chance the door can be forced open enough to get some contraption in to manually pull the door handle from inside? That's the only manual way to unlock a door that I can think of.

Thats no use if the deadlocks are on, as the internal handle is effectivly disabled, even the double pull will yield nothing.

It's a bit risky because you could spike one of the many control modules in the car, so do this at your own risk.... but apply some power to the starter motor from underneath for long enough to hit the unlock button. That's if it's not in gear of course.

Have you de-locked the boot too?

If not, have you tried getting in that way?

Yeah the boot and the doors are all de-locked so I have no chance of getting a key in.

Like Shark_90 suggested I was thinking of jacking the car up and getting a charge to the starter motor/alternator but I'm not sure what access is like from underneath?

Or could I pop the side mirror glass or number plate light out and get a trickle charge onto a positive connection there?

I had an accident once in a courtesy car (MK2 octy) and the very nice man from the AA did the starter trick with a coat hanger on the button, scratched all the door frame though and cost me £50 to the dealer for repair. Other than that it was a very long walk home, about 30 miles iirc.

That's a good idea in theory but both of them are controlled via the convenience system rather than it just being a feed into the main wiring loom with a switch to it. I'm not sure energising that side of the circuit would be a wise move or whether it'd help you to be honest.

pick the cheapest window..................

That you can reach through and still get at the bonnet release from without opening the door as you wont be able to.

or prepared to get a bit glassy climbing in!

And here ends today's lesson kids – delocking your car is silly.

Hope you get it sorted mate

Do you have a pair of towbar electrics sockets by any chance? One wire is permanently connected to the battery via a fuse so could be used for recharging the battery.

A Skoda main dealer may have come across this problem before so may be worth giving them a ring. They may know a trick to open the bonnet.

Cheers for the help guys, I'm back in now.

Called the breakdown company out. They jacked the car up and we put power to the starter motor. It gave us enough juice to unlock the car. The battery was registering 5volts when tested.

It's run now for about two hours and the battery is back to 14volts and is holding charge for now.

Cheers for the help guys, I'm back in now.

Was he a "very nice man" lol

For any young un's out there who think I'm mad

If the battery is faulty it may well be dead again tomorrow morning

Very true, the cold weather kills them.

Yeah, I've left the bonnet catch unlatched so I can get in if needed in the morning (car's in the garage). Will go to Halfords in the morning and get them to give it a battery check.

I don't understand how putting power to the starter motor will charge the battery, because the Solenoid will be open circuit.

Doesn't charge it, just allows you too power up the locks.

The main positive feed to the starter is connected directly to the battery positive, so connecting a jump pack to the starter positive and the negative from it to the cars body/engine will be equivalent to connecting the jump pack across the battery.

OK, sorry I may be a bit old fasioned on this one, if the solenoid is mounted on the starter as most modern cars are it will be live +. If the solenoid is separate from the starter it will be "open circuit" on the starter motor.

I'm talking about one connection to the starter and you're thinking of the other one at the solenoid. The solenoid is fed by a small cable which is connected to the ignition switch, which is open circuit with the switch in the off position. When the solenoid is operated it engages the starter pinion with the ring gear and the triggers a set of contacts which make the motor circuit allowing the motor to turn.

The starter is fed directly by a large cable straight from the battery positive which provides the power to turn the starter. If you connect a jump pack to this and earth, you are in effect connecting it across the battery terminals.

That halfords battery test is a waste of space.

Was showing my battery as just fine, when it wasn't/
