1.2 TSI S - ordered today 18.12.09

I'm back!!! and i am now an 'official member'.

I had awful trouble ordering a 1.2 TSI S model - so i went to order a Nissan Quashqai 1.6 ntec - and company couldn't place order on this spec. So went for a Golf 1.6 TDI SE bluemotion, ordered the vehicle then made of the mistake of clicking back on this forum, and saw Weaver's beautiful green 1.2 TSI S. I couldn't believe how nice it looked - if anything i prefer the 16" wheels to the 'carlos fandango' wheels on the SE model. But also couldn't believe that the S model came with door mirrors and handles in metallic paint!!!! (*awaiting comments/confirmation from Plumber on this!*)

So i've cancelled the Golf - lovely car it is, it just has no charachter compared with Yeti.

I have just got off the phone with our Fleet Company and ordered a 1.2 TSI S - but need to get back to them later today with choice of paint... i really can't decide on colour!!! i think Muscavdo rather than Capaccino Beige. Yeti does look better in bold/quirky colours

After nearly two weeks my only very slight issue with the 'S' trim is the steering wheel.

It's just the finish of the surface that could give a little more grip in the hands; my impression is that it's getting better as, presumably, it's building up a bit of tack from my hands but from new I found it just a little slippy.

I've never had parking sensors on a car and never missed them, but the height of the Yeti does mean that when reversing up to another parked car you can't see it's bonnet, and judging it just right is going to take a bit more getting used to. At the moment I'm very much erring on the side of caution.

No idea what it would be like on Alpine roads, but looking in the engine bay you get the feeling that if you were to yodel there would be a pretty decent echo - there's masses of space in there. Out of shot right is the battery, out of shot left the radiator and screen wash reservoirs,depth wise there is plenty of space as well. It really is a very compact unit.

So how's it running? still only done a couple of hundred miles and already very happy; very smooth, very quiet and seemingly never gets stressed.

Does it feel like a 1.6? My last 1.6 was in a MkIV (I think) Escort 12 years ago so not really a fair comparison - but this is a much nicer engine to drive and it does everything I want it to when I ask it.

Yes it really picks up from 1500 rpm or so, but 1500 rpm is immediate: press the pedal and there it is. I still find that 1st is my least favourite gear though. I don't know if it is common to VAG 'boxes in general, but 1st does seem to be a 'just to get you moving' gear and the manual even says not to use it for more than a single car length. It doesn't have a sense of urgency about it: if smoking tyres from standstill are your thing then you will be disappointed here. Get it into second though and it's as eager to get going as I'd want.

what's your experience with pulling power (in means of acceleration) in 5th and 6th gear?

Acceleration in 5th and 6th is the bit that's good fun with this engine.

In 6th, 40 mph is 1500rpm on the flat, 60 is 2000 rpm and that's just where the engine is really getting going. Dropping to 5th to overtake at 'A' road speeds feels plenty quick enough right now; the 1.2 revs very freely and once it's got a few more miles on it I'd expect 3rd and 4th to very useful if real acceleration is needed at similar kinds of speed.

To an extent I think I'm still changing down through habit rather than necessity on routes I know well, if the speed drops then a down shift is required, but if it's just acceleration there seems to be plenty in reserve.

Just to note, most of my driving so far has been with just me in the car - though adding a couple of passengers didn't seem to make much difference, but I haven't tried 'fully laden' yet. I also haven't done any dual carriageway/ motorway driving so it remains to be seen how the gears react with the needle at 70.

This litle marvel has indeed an "idle"moment and that is below 1500-2000 rpm, as you mentioned. Strange feeling on the first drive ; today i had a test drive of this for the first time, although i have ordered one (1.2) one month ago. The idle moment is more pronounced with the 2nd gear. In the traffic, if i am slowed with 2nd in the box, i have to put the 1rst gear, because the car is powerless at this moment. This is my 30 min experience only. We need more info from the owners!

After my 1.2 test, i drove the 1.8 model. What a DIFFERENCE! So much power and acceleration, no idle moments, strong feeling of real engine power. I must confess that i have my moments of doubt now, thinking to change my order and buy the 1.8 model instead. My little marvel is not produced yet (week 52). What do you advice?

errrr rule of thumb ....buy a diesel for low pulling power (lazy gearshifts) or a petrol for screwing the ass of it

sounds like u want a diesel.... it's either that or be prepared to keep the revs up a bit on a 1.2

with apologies for further thread hijack:

ikons - the 1.8 was never going to be an option for me: more money than I had to buy it, then more money than I'd want to spend to keep filling the tank!

For the type of driving I do (country roads with little traffic), and the type of car I'm used to (small engine, use the gears to keep it moving) the 1.2 does everything that I want. The bonus is that for when I do longer trips the 1.2 is proving to be very refined at cruising speeds.

I can see though, that it will never have a "strong feeling of real engine power", but then there are plenty of motorbikes with bigger engines than the little yeti!

For what it is, for what it costs to buy and run, I think it's an amazing engine - but it doesn't do magic.

As I said in my posts after the first 100 miles, it's the first time I've driven a car which is making me re-think the way I approach driving - it is perfectly possible to drive this car enthusiastically but to get the best out of it means using it's strengths rather than getting hung up on it's (minor) weaknesses.

Another way of looking at it:

the 1.8 is 600cc bigger than the 1.2 - that's half as much again.

It's like having a 1.2 then adding two more cylinders! (ok it doesn't quite work out like that but you see where I am going)

This is a very interesting thread for me because I will shortly decide between ordering a new Yeti 1.2TSI or new Golf.

I am strongly favouring the Yeti it has to be said and the experiences that people are sharing all seem so positive. Weaver, How is the average fuel economy going in the 1.2? Do you have any cabin rattles or squeaks?

I'm averaging between 35 and 40 mpg on my journey to and from work. It's only nine miles and very up and down. And I'm still only a bit over 200 miles in.

The only rattle I have had so far I noticed this morning but soon pin-pointed: there are small straps with press studs on the tops of the back seats which are used to keep the seat belt in the right position, I hadn't re-fastened one. Snap shut - rattle gone, all quiet again.

Thanks, that's good to hear. From what you say I would hope to achieve about 40- 42mpg because I don't really have too many hills in my neck of the woods...

Shrub, ditch the Golf. I just cancelled mine. They are lovely cars - but souless and boring. I think the Yeti would hold its value better to

I want a diesel, yes! But it's forbidden in my country! (Greece) ..go figure why...

apologies for the long time to respond been having a 'bad hair day' and I see that you have ordered but I hope this will still be of interest.

The Germans like us have a 4 model line up, bizarrely starting with the Yeti 'Yeti', anyway this base model is the only one to have black mirror & door handles according to their brochure which I am sure will in true German fashion be accurate :yes:

As their line-up although less well equipped in terms of standard kit does seem very familiar so I can only assume we are following a similar pattern.

You are right Krooked and that is why I am favouring the Yeti; it offers something a bit different and I do like the higher driving position. I have never owned a Skoda before but have a soft spot for the brand. If the 'E' model had standard ESP I would probably have ordered one already but I just have a few issues that I need to resolve. I have been planning to buy a Golf for months and the Yeti has really put a cat amongst the pigeons. It is the only other car that I am considering and, given that VW are increasing their prices by 2.4% on top of the VAT rise on 1st Jan I'd say it is only a matter of time before I join the SMOCemoticon-0100-smile.gif
