Horrific R8 Crash

Featured Replies

I agree with that completley, there are only so many eventual outcomes a car can practically be designed to withstand, hence the NCAP methods of testing front on, offset head on, sideswipe etc.

There is another R8 Crash on the net, (I wont post it here as the driver died) and the passenger cell held up perfectly, had the occupant been wearing a seatbelt he would have survived fine too.

What gets me is even a MK I octy has a bulkhead which is enough to stop the engine coming into you when you hit a ditch at 60.

You would hope that an R8 would have a decent bulkhead there that would have done something.

I'm guessing that area is all carbon fibre or something on the R8, which is going to offer no protection against a stiff steel rod.

I take it the other one you mention is the ejection one with the signpost etc involved.

I'm glad everyone made it out alive.

Aye thats the one,

I think though if you look at the cross section of the barrier that hit the bulkhead its actually the old elephant in stilettos scenario, the force that would usually have been spread by the cross section of an engine is now point loaded onto something very strong at a guess 10mm x 450mm, the barrier has just become a punch :(

:(

Looks like it happened in Greece - I dare say their barrier installation standards aren't up to those in the UK!

I hope this doesn't turn into a "actually he did die, but wow look at the pics" type thread...

I had a good search about the net Tom to see if I could find any more about it but at the moment nothing, if it changes the thread will vanish!

Found this in my pics, gives a good idea of what was supposed to be in its way.

Well? The speedo looks to be only 70-80mph?

What speedo you looking at? It's in km/h . Think he lost his nuts?

V8 or V10??

V8

Do-it-yourself Xmas suicide bomber.

Lucky driver to lose only his legs.

Is the armco steel or aluminium ?

Those pictures also pose another serious question.......

........why would you spec brown leather seats ? They look awful :o

To go with the Lederhausen.

You'd have thought that when steel met aluminium the latter would be the material of choice for barriers - more compresiible than steel and greater tensile elasticity

Looks like there is just a cross-member at the edge and that the armco went straight through that section.

At that point it was going to go straight through whatever limited material was behind it.

all i can say he has to have deep pockets

First dibs on the oil cap.

Im glad it wasnt just me that looked at that and thought about parts, I want the brakes :p

Wow thats somethings!! The speedo is reading in KM, so that probably makes it a little less, but I am assuming thats when it decided to stop working, so actual impact speed would have been greater, and quite possibly he was braking..

Either way it appears it was speed related, and I always like to advise, if you are going to speed best leave it to track days.. so much safer than the roads!

Everyone stay safe and drive sensibly, defo was a wake up call to pay attention to anything and everything!

Jesus wept , that has to sting a little :o

Well? The speedo looks to be only 70-80mph?

But that will be after very hard braking!!!!!!!!!!!

Imagine what speed it was going :S
