Horrific R8 Crash

Featured Replies

that's got to have stung a bit, not least in the wallet department.

OMG that is horrific. :'(

ouch :o

That's nasty!

Ouch, that makes me wince.

You have to say though, that the R8 seemed to offer almost no protection to the passenger cell against intruding objects.

I mean, what happened to the steel bulkhead that is usually there. I know they were moving some, but even so.

Well? The speedo looks to be only 70-80mph?

Anyone know a good place to get a wheel refurbed ?

Goodness me!

@Babs - if that was the speed going into the barrier then it's going to have been quiet some impact! :'(

First dibs on the oil cap.

Looks very nasty :(

OMG Ouch :o

I get the impression that it will probably not polish out! :dull:

Just out of curiosity, how many Encap stars does the R8 have?

5...

There's something about the barrier though, like it's not done what it was supposed to?

Have you noticed that modern safety barriers have a square end with a black and yellow plate on them? They used to just curve down to the ground, like a ramp. I wonder why they have been changed to this design, surely they are more dangerous (as that car has demonstrated)?

Cases of cars being launched into other traffic AFAIK. So now you just get a dead stop if you hit the end of the barrier, quite literally.

If a prosecution follows for driving without due care and attention he won't have a leg to stand on :(

That's a bit below the belt. :notme:

OUCH !

Wow, that is a nasty little prang.

The R8 has offerend no protection what so ever.

V8 or V10??

That's still one hell of a r8 approaching a sharpish bend :o

lucky to be alive :o

I can't see how the car, driven smack into the sharp end of a barrier, can possibly offer any protection unless it was made out of 6" thick steel. And even then it would be questionable!

Protection gets better all the time, but the laws of physics can't be altered!

I agree with that completley, there are only so many eventual outcomes a car can practically be designed to withstand, hence the NCAP methods of testing front on, offset head on, sideswipe etc.

There is another R8 Crash on the net, (I wont post it here as the driver died) and the passenger cell held up perfectly, had the occupant been wearing a seatbelt he would have survived fine too.
