Worst aspects of the Octavia

Featured Replies

It's probably because I was so used to my previous car, but the having to press the remote button *twice* to open anything other than the drivers door could yet lead to me inadvertantly ripping a door handle clean off.

This is so easy to change - have a look for someone living near to you with VCDS (Vagcom)

  • no bong for low washer fluid, no steering wheel controls are the two that grind on me most.

Say GTi to some one they normally reply nice car, you have to explain the vRS which is a shame as IMO its a better car

  • My main issue with the vRS in particular is the ridiculously high ride height they have as standard.

There's no pause on the CD in my Saab 9-3 either....

And I don't know if it's just a fault with my (soon to be changed) dash panel, but the cruise control warning light doesn't light up either (although the CC works fine).

I don't see a light either when my cruise control is on.

I assumed something had broken. Should there be a light on the dash ?

yes it should

For me it has to be the loss of the green light on the dash when the front fogs are on, as mine is also covered by the steering wheel

yes it should

That's a blow.

Would VAGcom pick it up ?

I have the freebie software and the lead still from my Golf.

Any idea where the socket is on the Octavia ?

Nothing major, quite a few minor niggles some common to all current cars, ultra dark interiors for instance. Road noise is probably the worst. If I travelled a regular route on the coarse surfacing which seems to be worse for noise generating, I'd be *very* annoyed! Right now it's the wiper trough and the inordinate amount of faffing needed to clear it (having to clear it at all from leaves or snow) or lift the wipers from it.

How often do you use your fog lights anyway?

If you do put them on, its obvious isnt it???

Ive put mine on once in 2 years........

The other day in horrendous snow and seriously reduced visibility....The only time the law allows you anyway

After only two weeks of ownership one thing that I have noticed is the hard base surface of all the multitude of storage bins. Every time you put something in any of the storage compartments including the glove box it rattles!

It would take all of about $1 for Skoda to add rubber base mats to these compartments to to stop that noise but maybe there's an opening for me here to start a little ebay business. :-)

Aside from that the lack of steering wheel controls is a bummer. I was told by my dealer that Skoda consider it unsafe to have steering wheel controls on manual performance car. What b/s! My wife's Audi S3 with the 188kw engine and manual trans has steering wheel controls and my mates MkV Golf TDI sport with the same diesel engine and gearbox as mine has steering wheel controls.

It's a little irritating that there is no quick way to mute or pause the sound of the Audience radio - I think it's the first in car unit I have ever come across that doesn't have a facility to pause CD playback.

If you have a multi function steering wheel you get a mute button...

Which is why I've lined some of mine with speaker cloth from Maplins - dead cheap and cut to size and stuck in place with double sided tape works a treat!

Most of the above and not having heater washer nozzles! [see my other post.]

Would also be nice to disable the headlight wash at will instead of wasting lots of fluid.

BTW my Elegance does have power folding/heated mirrors. Only discovered the folding by accident one day when I pressed the remote for a long time. Surprised me.

Hi!

Go to your local dealer and ask for special "longlife" bulb. Part number N 102 510 02 This is special bulb for octavia A5, and is different to standard P21/4-12V. Also make sure they give you genuine bulb from propper VW box. It does say "Made in Hungary" for some reason B)

yes it should

NOT on the pre 08 models

However, the ability of the hatchback to collect water and then dump it all over the boot insides when I open it does wear thin.

I've never suffered with this, no idea why.

The seatbelt warning bong and fifth wipe after spraying used to annoy me but VAGcom fixed those.

The only other thing I can think of is the automatic wipers, they rarely wipe at the point when I want them to.

That's weird, especially as the warning light is clearly there (just to the right of the centre of the speedo needle if you look at the correct angle!). It's also shown in the 'Brief Instructions' but not in the full manual...

+1

It would be handy if you could select auto wipe or conventional intermittent function as required.

The seats are terrible!

For us its the rear door panelling, and rear step or top of bumper of our Octy 4x4 estate, because we chose this type of model to carry our dog, and we found from the very first day the material used scratches very easily when dogs claws touches it. We have a posting on Briskoda a year or so ago concerning this problem. We suggest a more robust " anti scratch" material should be used, on rear of hatch, and maybe the rear step was of stainless. We respect others may not agree or have other options. Other than that car is fine, squeaks on doors we do get are always on bumpy roads, service garage did the silicon job on them, and in the most part its better.

Excellent car but the fabric seat and arm rest material annoys on F/L Elegance trim. It is like a magnet for hairs & fluff ( the material kind unfortunately!) Should be standard leather on this trim level - a la Yeti.

Nit-picking, front wiper service setting annoys, the rear wiper's weedy arm clip and the wheel nut covers can go awol (too much Jetseal 109 probably).

All outweighed by the numerous good points though.

Oooh yeah - forgot about that - got caught out the other day on the way to Doncaster on the Motorway - lots of spray and every other screen wipe seemed to need a wash as well so the headlights got well and truly sprayed - half way there the light came on to tell me I was almost out of washer fluid which meant the rest of the journey was a bit more difficult with a less than clear screen...

Some of the best seats I've sat in - must be my shape...

On the FL speedo there seems to be a warning light for some knd of "Parrallel parking assist" but I'm not sure if this works either

They always add things for future use

I'm sure I've seen somewhere selling a stainless steel cover for the top of the bumper...

Totally agree...though I do have the sense that they are maybe slightly narrower than some car seats - fortunately I am also quite narrow :giggle:

Can't fault the amount of adjustability of wheel/seat etc - as I mentioned in an earlier post, definately the most comfortable I've been behind a wheel.
