Front wheel bearing gone at 62K is this normal?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

The front wheel bearing on my 2001 1.8T L&K has just been replaced at 61K is this normal or is it just one of those things? Got to say it has been a long time since I have had to do a wheel bearing.. none of my previous motors needed this except a Rover car. Thanks Nick

Hi

One of mine went at about the same mileage on my 2002 vRS so I had them both changed. I agree it seems quite early but certainly not uncommon on the Octavia.

Regards,

I think it's actually a common problem on the Octavia - I also had to have 1 replaced on my 54 VRS at aroung 40K.

I had my nearside fail at 42000 and changed under waranty and the offside started to warble at 43000 again changed under waranty luckily :smirk:

None yet on mine, and I am at 158k (TDi) :-)

Nearside ??

If so it's common fault as mentioned above

I had a VRS in 2001 one of the first in the country and the rear right wheel bearing went in the first few thousand miles!

You can tell how chuffed i was especially when that was the period that Skoda was just starting to make a name for themselves!! lol

I've had 3 replaced so far :(

Both rears done at 80K just after I bought the car, and F/N/S at 100K last week.

Random, early wheel bearing failures are a common fault across VAG in general. Personally, I had one on my last car at 10k and one on my current car at 25k.

I wonder what it is that kills wheel bearings then, apart from the wrong wheels.

Must be the bearings themselves, or the way they are fitted.

I've not had one go yet at 108k.

Mine has had both front wheel bearings replaced(os/f twice now) in 119k. (o4 octy vrs) rears are original. :)

Think one of mine is shot, seems like it's the front not had one done snice ive owned the car in 3years, on 92k now.

How much roughly should i be looking to pay to supply and fit a new bearing? Not main dealers independent garage. Thanks.

Thanks for all your comments everyone.

Both front sets replaced for £120 & the bearing units were £25 each.

Cheers mate, got a rough estimate for just the one, said about £100 which i thought was a bit too much.

Hi, I have got the same issue but was quoted £300 for one side - apparently they are bearing and hub in one and cost £100 for the part and they then need to use some press to fit them. This is a Fabia 1.9 TDI. What car have you got? And where did you get this done?

Thanks

Seeing as this is posted in the Octavia mk 1 section i should think that its a Mk 1 Octavia Clutz ......:giggle:

bu99er it, spoke too soon :'(

Sods law mate my front off side has just started too at 44k :dull:

I replaced all 4 of mine at around 100k.

Bearing life will depend on how you drive and what roads you drive on. Push it on crap roads and they won't last long at all, drive like a saint on mirror smooth roads and I expect they will last forever.

I have the Octavia from 207 (tour version 2.0 engine/auto tranny)

What is the front bearing number? and air filter model?

Thanks

SV
