So much wheelspin!

Featured Replies

Think I'll be leaving mine as standard then, my driving history is not the cleanest (9 points in the last 5 years with another 3 on the way, although 6 of those disappear forever this year) and I'll also have a claim on record at next years renewal...

Now, where do I get my right foot lightened? emoticon-0100-smile.gif

I have a fair few kitchen knives and a samurai sword at home - happy to help ;)

i found when in the market for my car was is prettty highl modded that chris knott and adrian flux were way out ahead.

Cool, I'll give them a shout in March, I'll be used to my stock mdoel by then, I'm still in the "am I being bad acelerating this hard, hmm well its not anywhere near the redline yet" mode :)

Trouble is, even if the has the same name as the OEM, the checksum will be different so could be spotted by someone who knows what they're doing (and trust me, the insurance companies do have people who know what they're doing) Admittedly, a lot of the time it wouldn't be checked, but I wouldn't risk it as knowing my luck, my car would be checked...

Best bet would be something like shark90s device where you could save the original map and in the event of a claim shove it back on before the insurance gets to see the car :-) When's that out for the CR? :giggle:

Out of interest, how much extra is the insurance company wanting from you Harlequin?

Agree with you fully, that they DO indeed have lads with the know. However, i was told recently of an assessor looking at a 2.7 TDI A6 at a Garda Station in Galway , The gard that was with him is fairly in the VAG know -how. He was using some Generic Cheap VCDS equivelant with a stupid looking OBD connecter. He couldn't recall the brand of Software or OBD connector, but he was saying that the HMI was very basic and wouldn't be a patch on Vag-Com , VCDS.

Also agree with asking Shark 90. I was chattin to him in relation to a DPF replacement pipe issue with JBS / Custom codes and he does seem to be on top of his game . Sems like a sound lad too.

EDIT: Appologies for going off topic

Going back to the original question about grip...

This time of year, where road temperatures are typically below 8C, tyres will not retain grip.

The only remedy is to get winter tyres which are designed to give grip in low temperatures

Thanks Chris - I am just not putting my foot down until I am in 3rd and get some traction hehe! :D

To be honest I'm not having much problem with mine, mind you I'm not ragging the arse out of it in 1st and 2nd, but I'm not hanging around either and the roads here are rubbish, wet, gritty, muddy and generally rather pants. I have Dunlop Sport Maxx GT (seems the new choice on vRS) on my car. However they were awful in the snow.

They're not great at stopping in the wet either ;)

I shall bow to your greater experience on that one :)

Fairly simple and not too expensive solution is to fit a WALK.

Winter tyres for me

On the insurance point, "direct insurers" like the name cited just aren't interested in anything other than standard "family" cars; They will quote you silly money increases for any "performance" modification, such as putting Elegance wheels on an Ambiante (or even more ridiculously, L&K wheels on an Elegance [same size but 7 spoke rather than 5])..

Having not owned a FWD for a looong time, I am wanting to know if the vRS Diesel is a wheel-spinner anyway :D In the damp it seems pretty much impossible to retain traction if you stick your foot down at all. Even in the dry its hard!

Tyres are fine so just wanted to see if this is something I just need to get used to or are there things I can do?

Cheers,

Andy

HI there.

I have a vRS TDI and yes traction is a problem! as it is on all VAG fwd. My car is 3 years old this year so i am thinking of trading in for a Octy 4x4 140bhp and bringing up to RS spec.

If youv'e ever driven a 4x4 or Scout it's a revelation as to the lack of drama of the line. even more so with latest 4th generation Haldex diff and the interior is almost pure RS apart from seats and steering wheel. it's also able to fully exploit the extra power of remapping. It's also a lot of car for less, it.s just that it doesn't look like it but over time it wouldnt cost so much to retro fit RS aprons, seats'wheels etc. iIf i go down this route i'll post you.

Cheers

..... or get a Yeti CR 170 4x4

you dont need a 4x4, they might have abetter traction, but there is also more weight and more drive train power loss.

Good tyres, a performance lower engine oount, a good progressive remap, and an LSD and you wont be wanting 4wd.

LSD? Is that so you can see all the pretty lights and hallucinations as you drive? :)

I was playing around in our PD VRS the other day with the dynoliciuos software for my itouch recorded a 0-60 of 9 seconds which considering the weather isnt that bad for a bog stock car

Yep our 4x4 is three years old in a month or so and I'm contemplating getting it remapped to give comparable figures to the Vrs - only trouble is it's an 8 valve BMM with dpf so I'm a bit wary of causing problems with the DPF...

limited slip diffferential. an expensive mod, and very subtle, but probably one of the most overlooked mods available, the guys who have the big turbo'd TFSIs have to use them or they just spin up at a touch of the throttle
