Electric folding mirrors on Elegance?

Featured Replies

Slightly off topic but although my new FL L&K, which I've had for five weeks, has folding mirrors they can't be folded above five miles an hour. As I drive in narrow country lanes its useful to be able to fold the mirrors irrespective of speed when oncoming traffic is passing. Both my previous Rover 75 and my wife's new Fiesta can fold their mirrors at any speed. I've asked the supplying dealer to sort the problem but heard nothing for over a week. Are they all the same?

This is quite intentional and it is to stop the mirrors being folded in accidentally whilst on the move.

My SEAT Toledo has folding mirrors with exactly the same function - all controlled via CAN bus, but not sure if you could "delaer programme" it out.

John.

  • I'd prefer something that just zaps people who come too close to my car, let alone the wing mirrors!

When talking to Skoda Customer Services I pressed them to say why folding mirrors could not be fitted retrospectively to my Elegance. They said that the wiring loom and electronics were different. Most mass production cars used to be fitted with a standard loom with wires for any features not fitted just folded back and I am doubtful about a car where all the ECUs cannot easily be changed. Whilst mentally questioning the the response a thought did occur to me.

Manufacturers now rely increasingly on selling extras where profit margins are substantial. They would therefore wish to discourage purchasers from retro fitting OEM extras at a much lower cost. Are they deliberately making retrofitting more difficult or are they just claiming that it is to try to support factory fitted sales? A Skoda engineer probably knows the answer.

The other option is that perhaps whoever you spoke to in Skoda Customer Service doesn't have a clue!!

i just got a new elegance, which, i thought it had folding mirrors, but it doesnt.

when i contacted my dealer, he just quoted the text, saying, they have the right to change spec blah blah blah blah,

i think i might try skoda direct, just to see what they are saying.

So I popped down to my dealer to check my new car had got all its options fitted ahead of picking it up in March and I noticed that the door mirror adjustment knob didn't have the folding picture. I mentioned this to the dealer as I thought the Elegance had electric folding mirrors as standard and he said the brochure might just mean electric adjustment and manual fold. I said I don't think that was the case, but either way it doesn't look like my car has this fitted (unless they've just stuck the wrong fascia on the knob and the function is actually there!). So I was wondering if anyone else with an FL Elegance can confirm whether or not they have the electric folding mirrors?

Thanks a lot.

I ordered my Octavia Elgegance in late November 2009 and was told a few days later that it would be produced in week 03 of 2010. I decided to have it delivered in March so it would be on a "10" plate. Got a call from my local dealer last week and he told me that he had just been told, in an email from Skoda UK, that the electric folding mirrors were no longer fitted as from week 01 of 2010 and the new brochure would reflect this. Skoda gave two option either reject the car and place a new order or accept £180 of dealer extras or servicing as good will gesture. As the car is in the dealer's compound with its new number plates fitted I opted for the £180. I have just checked the on-line and the print 01/2010 brochure and it still shows electric folding mirrors as standard. I think Skoda may have taken it for granted that they are "the manufacturer of happy drivers".

I received a telephone call from Skoda Customer Services this morning. I was told that Skoda had now arrived at a policy, although I gathered that it might vary according to the circumstances. I was offered £180, presumably in cash, or I could return the car and another would be manufactured with folding mirrors. In the meantime the dealer would provide a courtesy car.

I enquired what had gone wrong and was told the factory had not told Skoda UK about the manufacturing changes. Where a customer opts to replace the car the costs will be borne by the factory.

Just checked out the replacement mirror and ,yes, there is a foldy symbol- but hidden by the knob when I am sat in my normal position.

There are worse things in life than a lack of folding mirrors.Car specifications do get changed in the real world; it's not a personal slap in the face. Don't let it put you off a fine car.

If you want to boost a lawyers wallet, fine, but I'm grateful to be alive and try not to dwell on such trivia.

Well I'm happy to cope without the folding option, but if Skoda want to pay me some compensation or potentially replace the car then I'm not going to argue. Just called Skoda UK and they are going to investigate and call me back. In some ways I hope they just offer the £180 as I can't be doing with making the decision about ordering a new car, especially now I've seen my new car and just want to get on with driving it ;)

I got my Elegance earlier this month and same problem, no elec folding mirrors. I did however get the Bolero stereo though when the lesser one was in the brochure so it's kind of six on one and half-dozen of the other!!

ive only just ordered my elegance the other day, should I contact the dealer to check or wait, as i want the folding mirrors and I was given the brochere with the folding mirrors listed as standard

I would check if I were you. You can fix it now before they build it, afterwards it might be too late.

I could be wrong ( I am frequently according to my wife) but I think the Bolero Radio system is standard on the SE and Elegance (UK) and Elegance (ROI). I ordered a spare wheel as an extra with my new (yet to be delivered) Elegance and have just realised that is what I will get ie no tyre just the wheel!

I think you get a tyre AND a jack/toolkit as well. But better check!

Skoda are due to call me back on Monday about what my options are. If they offer me the option to refuse the car and order a new one then I'll probably take it, assuming they provide me with a car in the interim. My dealer then phoned up today to say could I go in over the weekend to sign the finance papers in preparation for picking up my car on 1st March. Should I wait until after I hear back from Skoda on Monday before signing anything in case I do want to refuse the car?

I think you can be confident that will get a tyre on your spare wheel! Presumably £50 extra? Certainly I did. However, it will be a steel wheel, not a matching alloy and you will not get the emergency repair kit. Yes, you are correct, Touchscreen Bolero 6CD radio is standard on the SE and Elegance according to the brochure and my Elegance certainly came with that . Just the electric folding mirrors missing! I am told that all UK Elegances coming out of the factory are now being fitted with them again, just a mistake affecting the unfortunate few.

So are you refusing your car and requesting a new one be built with the mirrors then Ray? If so, what car are the dealer providing you with in the mean time - the one you should have had?

Yes, GroundHog, that is my present intention. I am awaiting a letter from the dealer setting out his proposals. I think he is going to want the Octavia back as soon as practicable but what I might be prepared to accept in the interim depends on how quickly a new car can be obtained. It is claimed the problem was caused by the factory so it seems reasonable to expect Skoda to make an early slot to build a replacement.

I'd be interested to see what they offer. I'm due to hear back from Skoda tomorrow as to what they are going to offer me - whether that be a replacement car or compensation, so we'll see.

Heard from the dealer - they will offer either £180 or I can have my car rebuilt with the mirrors. However they then won't honour my part-ex deal as the new car won't arrive for up to 3 months so they anticipate the price for that will reduce by about £500. In that time I also have to get new tax, new MOT and a service done so effectively about £900 out of pocket already! Enquired about them offering any courtesy cars and they wouldn't even entertain the idea. Pretty ****ed off now - so much for happy drivers! So they basically offer you £180 or you can lose out on lots of money but get your mirrors. Think I'm just going to let Skoda win this little battle and take my new car without the folding mirrors - they still fold manually ;)

Calling Skoda UK just to make sure the stories match though...

And yes Skoda UK agree. There are apparently 3 options available depending on where you are in your order. If the car hasn't been built yet then they'll put the folding mirrors on and not charge. If its been built then you are offered either £180 or you reorder the car through your dealership and they add them as a no-cost option. This will mean as lengthy a delay as when you first ordered your car though, as Skoda will treat it as a new order. They will not provide any courtesy cars or anything unless you can sort something with your dealer (apparently one chap accepted his car, the dealer then bought it off him for nigh on the price he bought it for, and then they leased it back to the owner whilst he waits for the new car to be built). SUK did say the £180 should usually be spent on accessories, but they are willing to offer it as a cheque too where people don't want to spend it at the dealership.

I did ask if I went in to a dealership ordering an elegance afresh then would I get the folding mirrors as standard and they said it would be a cost-option (no indication of the cost but I guess about £180!), so it seems that even going forward the elegances won't come with these mirrors as standard.

Therefore I've gone for the £180 - its going to work out the cheapest in the long run for me. I don't need folding mirrors; I can only think of about 3 occasions over the last 15 years of motoring that I've thought I wish I could electrically fold in my mirrors, so I'll probably cope for another 5 years, and it means that next Monday I pick up my nice shiny new car. I can't wait :D
