MK1 VRS POOR RUNNING

Featured Replies

Hi guys and gals, just thought i'd share my experience with you all and hope it's beneficial to you.

over the last few months i've noticed the my ocy has been feeling laggy coming on boost and idel hasn't been that smooth to be honest. cutting out when intiially starting up when cols etc...

so the weekend i set about sorting the problem.

having recently tried another n75 valve i ruled this out of being the problem.

i decided to remove the turbo - maf hose and clean that out, whilst doing this i noticed the plastic valve fitted to the pipe neasrest the turbo outlet was full of emulsified oil!!

this had to be coming from some where!! so with that all cleaned out i set about tracingall the pipe work from it. connected to this is the breather pipe that goes to the rocker cover and Y's off to the breather pipes under the inlet manifold. a bit fiddly but easily removed.

once out i discovered that all of these pipes were 90% blocked and 2 of them were split open!!

so with some good cleaner and several lengths of hose they were all cleaned/replaced.

i then set about claening the TB out and claening the sensor mounted into the inlet manifold next to the TB.

all bolted back together and then started up, OMG the difference was noticeable instantly. so smooth on tick over and instant throttle responce when the throttle was touched!

one thing i did find was i also had a air leak on the servo vacum pipe right behind the MAF, again sorted this and took it for a test drive.

HOLY ****!!! the car was back to how it was when i bought it in 2005, lightening quick pick up in any gear and and pulling like a steam train. i am officially back in love with the Vrs!!

i recommend all vrs owners check there breather hoses for splits / blockages as it makes such a difference!!

a couple of piccys taken the weekend

You'd be amazed at the amount of oil that collects in the intercooler pipework too. The breather system is supposed to return oil vapour into the air filter housing so it gets sucked back in through the turbo and burned off in the engine, but the vapour condenses as it cools in the intercooler and you get loads of it collecting in the pancake pipe just inside the drivers wheel arch. (This is probably also where the oil in the diverter valve comes from)

One day I will get round to fitting an oil catch can then shouldn't have to worry about all this oil in the pipes!

I could`nt agree more, recently done a vagcom scan which indicated an oil breather was split, which turned out it was the one on the right of the dipstick(already changed the one on the cam cover) Changed that, and rescanned(clear) and while vagcom was on, I re-aligned the throttle body too as I cleaned it out last year. OMG *what* a difference, the car is so smooth and powerful again with just a touch of the throttle, I also think after about 18 months It has also fixed the rough cold running problem(first 5 mins) Chuffed to bits now :)
