Realistic motorway MPG of VRS

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Im looking to change from my current car a 3.0 Z4 due to the milage im doing - can be as high as 3000/month !

the z4 isnt too bad for 3.0 i get 32-33 on long run.

So basically I was wondering what i would realistically get out a VRS while on cruise control over a 200 motorway journey - ive no probs taling it easy at say 60-70 to get good mpg.

id ideally like a car thats guarenteed to get above 50mpg in those conditions...

Cheers for any advice and feedback.

Last few runs on the motorway been averaging late 50's to early 60's depending on the weather and speed. (taken on trip computer) my average average with short town journeys and traffic is on the trip 49.8 working it out via the tank it comes back fairly close to that only 1.8mpg less.

My old run from London to Cheshire I used to get over 600 miles to a tank with out really trying that hard most I've ever got out of one tank was 705 miles and that was from a full (brim) tank until the computer said 0.

My fabia is re-mapped though and the 700miles was really really taking it easy (55-65)

I cant see why you should not be able to get 50mpg+ on a motorway run.

sounds good mate - im trying to figure out wheather i should go for like a vrs for the decent performance and economy of go for one of the littler diesels to get better mpg or if there actually much in it. like a clio/C3

My mates got a 1.4 TDCi Fiesta, and being honest, in my vRS I get better economy than he does! On my weekly trip to and from Leeds (Uni), I've had up to 65MPG accoring to the trip computer (it's 45 miles of A roads pretty much, through a few 30's and quite a few sets of lights when you get into Leeds)

Over the last 1500 miles, according to my trip computer i've averaged 50MPG, but that's taking into account the fact i've only had the car 1.5months and still loving the power, in comparison to my last car.

On a motorway run, of 70 miles, I averaged 55MPG, but that was sat at 70-80mph all the way, with a few random outbursts of speed.

All in all, they're VERY economical cars!

to be fair it depends on what you want out of it, if its just straight forward mpg and running costs then something less "sporty" might be the way to go, maybe the PD100 might give more. Or maybe even the 1.4tdi? I know my ex's 1.4Tdi used to about 520-600 out of the tank and she ragged the **** out of it, so I'm guessing with a light foot you should see good figures.

I'm not saying that you will get the figures I've qouted but in nearly 6 years of ownership and 93k miles the worst ave mpg I've had was on the "Ring"

I wont say get a skoda because I'm a skoda fan as the frenches can give good cheap motoring (says he that just convinced someone to buy a 1.4tdi fabia).......research, test drive where possible and then make ya mind up.

The aerodynamics of the Fabia I are very much against good economy at high speed. I get 58mpg at 60mph (true, from satnav) on a cruise and about 45mpg at 75mph. I've had the car in Germany several times and cruing at a steady 100 (indicated, 92mph true from satnav) I was getting about 30mpg. At full speed (126mph true on the flat) I was just about getting a genuine 25mpg, so it falls off quite badly as you speed up.

have you considered an Audi TT diesel as trading down from a Z4 will be quite a drop in performance.

I believe the PD100 to be quite economical. A friend has a fabia estate and regularly gets 550-600 miles to a tank - i think this may be in some part due to the narrower profile tyres and thus lower rolling resistance. My vRS returns between 480 and 550 miles usually, motorway commuting.

the best ive had out of my vrs is 470miles to a tank an 57mpg on the motorway

I generally get mid-40's from my diesel Ibiza Cupra (with a hybrid turbo) on my 55+ mile commute up the m40. and that's keeping up with the general flow of traffic, no sitting at 55mph

I do 72 miles round trip to work and back daily, 90% on the motorway. I drive off-peak and sustain pretty much 65 miles / hour average over the whole run, based on a steady 70 on the motorway. Due to driving off peak start / stop is very very limited to getting to and from the motorway.

1. During the worst of this winter, de-icing, longer cold-start etc.. I got 52mpg.

2. As it's getting milder I've hit a decent 61mpg (usually 56mpg) intermittently,

3. During the summer I get 61 -> 65mpg consistently.

On a return trip during mild weather, giving it some beans ... aggressive throttling during cold start leading to 70 - 80 on the motorway with traffic can give me about 50mpg.

Seriously aggressive (Why oh why do I do I.T. for a living) throttling 70 - 90 mph gives me around 45mpg

Hope this helps.

Phil.

I get between 60-66mpg when I go to my sisters house in Birmingham from London at 70MPH. Ive got a pd100 and very pleased with motorway mpg but not so with town driving.

Approx. 55 mpg for me in a remapped PD100, sticking to 70ish.

I have a 20 mile trip to work, mainly on motorway. I drive like a nun for trip to work at about 65mph in nearside lane and usually receive around 62mpg on the trip computer for the journey...

I averaged 52mpg for a 240 miles journey today.

cheers guys,

theres a few things to look at here - if i got a re-map etc id have good torque when i was in the mood but good cruising mpg when i need it most of the time -

When i bought the z4 i previously had a saab aero with 290bhp/315lbft torque so ive went down a fair bit in performance but miss the low down torque im used to and feel the z4 sometimes sluggish till its wound up - i much prefer the low down kick in back....

if i could also get cruise on vrs id be even happier :-)

doing about 80mph on the motor way i couldnt get better than 50mpg

On a remapped vRS, with cruise set at 60mph, id consistently get 64-65 mpg, but have seen as much as 77 driving like a pansy

Generally about 40-45mpg around town

I found that driving sensibly (like a fart) with the remap I get 62mpg plus.

However driving normally on roads around 52....... motorway however never had any more than 50 usually around 45-50mpg

Ive had mid 70mpg sitting behind a lorry before, doing 55-60mph.

All the above figures are good - take its easy and you get 50 - 60 mpg, a spirited drive will see 40 - 50 mpg.

Most motorway driving I do seems to get me bang one 50 mpg, keeping nicely in the outer two lanes.

There is no reason I can see why you wouldn't get over 50 mpg at 70 with cruise on.

If however I was doing up to 3,000 miles a month I may be looking for a more comfortable car. Don't get me wrong, I think the Fabia is a very comfortable for it's class and level of performance but I don't think any car in this class i.e. a fabia, fiesta, polo, clio etc can be as comfortable as a larger car. They just seem to smooth out the bumps a bit better.

Another thing to bear in mind is the Fabia as fixed servicing intervals of 10,000 miles. With your mileage you'll be having the car serviced 3-4 times a year. Something with longer or variable intervals may be worth investigating. Just my 2 pennies worth.

and they still do 50+mpg on motorway runs when tuned up hard. Hopefully mine will still be economical when I get it back.

Oh, and when I say 50mpg I meal actual, not the 60 that the display gives you :giggle::giggle::giggle:

My last tank I got 44mpg (worked it out myself, don't trust the trip computer) and that was at 85-90mph using cruise control. Also my car is re-mapped.

Morg

Similar story with my remap, to get 60mpg I'd be looking at keeping at around 60mph and driving sensibly. However I do like to "feel the torque" so normally end up around 50-55mpg at best. Driving for fun and not economy I'm normally 40-45mpg.
