Featured Replies

following the current virus/hacker troubles i'm looking at improving protection , it would also be useful to split it as well

i've seen this at

I use a DG834 at home. Never had any problems and no hackers have got through, although I also run Zone Alarm Pro ( had it before I had ADSL) :)

Quite easy to set up - configuation is done through a web browser. Mine has been up and running without any problems since January 2003 :)

Once you have a hardware router / firewall your risk of hacking goes down dramatically. Virus protection still needs to be handled on each separate PC.

Most of these devices are set up via a browser interface - you type in the address of the router into your browser and get a set of configuration menus. They're mostly similar and not difficult to navigate. The default set of options will usually work straight out of the box, except that for ADSL you need to configure your ISP details into the modem part of it.

My current project at work involves a lot of testing with ADSL Routers.

From experience and in general I have not been impressed with equipment from either Netgear or D-Link.

Linksys is much easier to set-up and, I have found, to be more stable in a wireless set-up.

Try a WAG54G.

Buffalo WMR-G54-1 or Draytek Vigoor 2600G are also good.

Remember you can also set-up the firewall on your pc when sorting out your connection.

Run a software firewall as well, or instead of if you wish. Sygate personal is very good, controllable and free.

I have a wireless router, that has built in firewall, and I still run a software firewall.

I have a Zyxel Prestige 600 series combiner router and switch. Very easy to set up, very flexible and been up and running without a problem. It replaced an SMC Barricade router which was a bit flakey, even running the latest firmware!

 Haven't had any problems with my SMC Barricade. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is pre-programmed with a list of stratum 1 NTP servers, and won't let me select anything else.

Agree with Chris on the ZyXEL 600 series although you have to choose carefully if you want wireless capability. 660HW-61 is easy to set-up and stable. 650 also easy to set-up but requires a wireless LAN card for wireless operation.

Found the SMC Barricade to be fine.

Good place for review is ADSL Guide and to buy from, Broadbandbuyer.co.uk is good.

Sorry - just to qualify, this was an SMC Barricade 7401BRA which is probably a couple of years old now...... :)

My home PCs trouble started after I installed Zone Alarm Pro on it. Now it tries to start a dial up connection on boot up, tries to load a non existant file on boot up and will only actually connect to the internet through my account (not the wifes). Even removing the software did not solve any of these problems. No virus, no extra devious spyware etc, been down that route. About to reformat and reinstall everything from scratch :(.

I quite like my D-Link too, although I have found the wireless side to be less than brilliant. Having said that it's a year old now and no doubt there are better models. A firmware upgraded did improve it, too.

easy to set up my rs

My stuff is D-Link, the DI714-P, and related pci card for the eldest,s pc. The wireless side is much more stable when SP2 is installed, and doesnt seem to "forget" its connection.

Netgear DG834G here - unit of urine to set up (3 fields to fill in) and on the net in under 5 mins.

Latest firmware seems to have sorted some small wireless instabilities out. I know of a few businesses who only use Netgear wireless kit and I haven't heard any complaints. There's a good bundle deal going on at the mo thru various retailers and e-tailers too.

HTH!

getting the modem side for the first (wired) pc was fine but the wireless network took quite a lot more to sort out.

Looks like I'll need an extension aeriel for one pc as the signal strength isn't great but other than that its working well.

The built in firewall sems to make a difference - before the zonealarm was showing loads of alerts but now almost none .....well i hope thats cos of the new firewall!! and not because zonealarms stopped working

went for the WAG54G and got it set up afetr a while but the signals keeps dropping out.I'm using a pc and laptop both on matching cards and the trouble seem to be the router stops transmitting - any ideas?

Same as above. Dg834 with Nv 2004. Easy to set-up, easy to update firmware, no hax (that I know of!). One thing that can be tricky is opening specific ports for using peer-peer and ftp downloads. I just cant get azureaus to work as it should. Not a fault of dsg just my n00b pc skills. :(
