Idle RPM

Featured Replies

As i was driving home yesterday i found that the car was idling high (nearly up to 1500 revs). Now im used to this in the winter as they do but it was 12 degrees outside. I cant understand why it does it. Oh and its a 07 fab vrs. Thanks for any help in advance

Was your a/c turned on? My idle speed increases when it is on.

dont use the A/C, had the car 2 years and it's never been on. I have the MOT due next month so il see if they can sort it out.

had this problem on an old car, it was a lose pipe attached to the air filter

This means more air gets in so the engine revs to pump diesel in to keep the air/diesel mixture at the right level

if you have had a service or new filter later just check the connections otherwise could be a split in a pipe

I had the same problem within warranty, they replaced the accelerator pedal assembly, now ok.

Quite a common fault.

DB.

I have this on mine.

The car can do it whenever it likes.

Tonight whilst doing my usual Friday 150 mile commute I stopped at the services and when I started the car again it was sitting at 1500 rpm.

When I dipped the cluth it dropped to normal rpm but this doesn't always clear it and it can be quite scary when I'm in 4th, take my foot off the accelerator expecting the car to slow and it just carries on!

Looks like I'll have to get the accelerator assembly changed then.

Potentiometers (I think there are 2 in there) in the pedal can give up like any component I suppose. :) I prefer the days of a long cable pulling a lever myself :D

Daniel, you should run the A/C for 5 mins occasionally - it helps stop the seals drying out (or something like that). I think it's worth doing to help prevent repair bills in the future.

I'm sure someone will chip in if I'm wrong about this.
