New VRS 2.0 tfsi - Rattling noise

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, this is my first post but I have been viewing this forum for some time whilst I was waiting for my new VRS to be built.

I finally picked it up on Monday and I have noticed a strange noise when excelerating between 2200 and 3000 rpm. It is a metalic rattling sound which happens when the car is hot and cold and does not sound right for a new car.

I have seen previous posts which have described a similar sound but they have not been followed up wth any results. It seems this is a common complaint with all cars sharing this engine (VW and Audi)

Is this noise common with 2.0 tfsi Skoda owners? If so has anyone had any luck with stopping it or will I just have to try and get used to it?

Thanks for your help.

  • nothing odd about it. its a characteristic of the tsi engine. happens across all the VwAG engines. there r thousands of threads out there with mk6 golf gti owners complaining of the same "rattle"

  • Wastegate linkage rattle as mentioned earlier in the thread. You need clip 06J145220A fitting to the linkage. Two minute job (from under the car)

Could be a resonance in the exhaust heat shielding, or possibly pinking. Maybe try running the fuel tank right down, then fill it with brand name fuel (if you normally use supermarket) or a premium high octane, and see if it goes away if it sounds like pinking to you.

One way or another if you picked up a new car on Monday & were wondering if it was "right" I'd have it back to the dealers, if only for your own piece of mind.

Mine is one of the early MkII vRS's TFSI as against FSI, and I've never had that experience, and I think that if I had suddenly noticed a specific metallic noise at certain rev's that was clearly repeatable, I'd have it back like a shot so some one could have a look at it!

Thanks for your help guys. It could well be the heatshield. I have been running it on Esso super unleaded (or whatever it is called) so that probably rules out any problem with the fuel type.

I think a drive over to the dealers is in order to let them take a look.

I'll update once I have spoken to them.

Thanks.

Yes take it back , no noises from mine .

On the TFSI the air intake had a habit of falling apart.....

yeaph i get the same noise on my tsi as well, its got to do with the turbo spooling or something. Far as i know and what skoda have said its so called normal for the turbo device.

im not 100% but ive done 11k so far and it hasnt changed noise at all.

I had a look at the air intake and it looks in one piece still.

I'm taking it in this afternoon to see what they say. I expect it will be similar to what they told you amity.

Strange thing is, I don't think I noticed it when I test drove a new one before ordering mine. Maybe I did and assumed it was to do with the turbo. Problem is now I have driven it more I find it a bit irritating.

Mine has a slight noise as you describe but only under some acceleration and between maybe 2000-2500 revs. Past that point it dissapears completely and it doesnt even appeaar with very gentle acceleration through the same rev range.

Mine is the same. Sounds like something loose or the how the wastegate used to sound on an original Audi Quattro! I'm goin with wastegate noise as I can't find anything loose. If it was a leak of exhaust gas then we would have power drops which I don't have. Can't see it being pinking as this would be evident at all revs when initially under load. Please post dealer response.

yeha if you could let us know what your dealer says

thanks

I took it into the dealers this afternoon and they could hear the noise I am talking about.

They said it is not anything serious and is likely caused by induction? Probably a common thing with that spec of engine and turbo.

They want to drive another new petrol VRS to see if it is the same and will be contacting me when they get one in.

So I will wait for a call back but in the meantime will enjoy the car. It performs brilliantly and does not loose any power at any point (not that I have taken it to the redline yet as it's so new).

Thanks for your responses, I will keep you posted when I hear from the dealers.

Staggering! Diagnosis = nothing "serious" yet they don't know what it is and will only know if the try another one!!!

Wow!!!

Good job they aren't doctors! Can you imagine it. "Well i've no idea whats wrong with you, despite the fact I can see there is something there, still I wouldn't worry about it, but we will ask then next patient if they have the same problem, and if they do, that should reassure you!" :dull:

Naaaaa!

Is it the Tfsi or tsi we are refering to. I'm just thinking maybe the cam chain tensioner on the Tsi maybe busted?

I agree, I suppose they are trying to see if it is just a characteristic of that engine before they start digging deeper and pulling things apart. Considering that the sound isn't really that loud/aggressive, I can understand that.

Doesn't fill me with confidence though. Am tempted to try and get a test drive in another one so I can see if the noise exists for myself.

I think it is a tfsi but I may be wrong. It should be the latest engine they are building them with.

Would a loose cam chain be noticable under gentle acceleration because my noise is only apparentl under moderate or heavy acceleration?

I think we are going to be told its a characteristic of the engine!!! I think its reassuring that they are all doing it at the same revs. Mine starts at 2300 and disappears at 2800. Its just noticeable under gentle acceleration but under hard acceleration quite pronounced, especially driving alongside a building or a wall which I have been doing to help determine where the noise is coming from. As I said in my previous post I think its a wastegate issue and I'm basing this on my experience with early turbocharged cars, I had a few SAAB 99 Turbo's, one with with water injection, which made a similar noise throughout the rev range - the wastegate was open most of the time!!

I'm thinking that the engine has been tweeked to give lots of torque in this rev range and the turbo will have been optimised to spin up quickly at these revs which will in turn cause the wastegate to open slightly to control boost.

In the PC/emmision strangled/noise limited times that we live I actually quite like the noise, as I say it brings back memories of watching Blomquvist/Mikkola flying down a RAC Rally stage belching flame out he back of the Quattro!!!

I think the wastegate sounds like the most plausable explanation at the moment. Looking at previous related posts and links to VW sites, they pretty much all mention that rev range.

With this being my first turbo charged car, it sounded a little odd but I guess I will get used to it. It is also possible that the people who don't hear it have a different spec of turbo.

I will wait to hear from the dealer and post the update.

alot of people have pointed to the wastegate in other posts, think its the just setup hence the noise.

Mmmmm, don't quote me but, you say you had to wait for it to be built? And it's a TFSI, now I thought all new Octy VRs petrol came with the TSI engine? I might be wrong and you have the TFSI unit, but if not and you have the TSI then the raspy sound you hear is perfectly normal......................

This thread needs a sound recording of the noise.

Yeah you are right it is a TSI, my mistake. I doesn't really sound raspy to me, it's definitely more of a rattle. Not the kind of sound I would say is acceptable from a £20K (list price) car.

This thread needs a sound recording of the noise.

I will see if I can get a recording.

The car has has been into a second dealer who also thought the noise was strange. They had a look underneath it and thought the most likely cause is the flexible downpipe. It is booked in just over a week away to have the downpipe replaced.

I have seen posts on other forums which don't show positive results from changing the downpipe but you never know. I hope they can get rid of the noise because apart from that it is a great car.

I was thinking the same regarding TFSI and TSI. :wonder:

Perhaps the thread title should be changed to reflect the correct engine type.

Yes, good idea! I don't think I can change it though. Could a moderator possibly change tfsi to tsi in the title please?
