Staggering! Diagnosis = nothing "serious" yet they don't know what it is and will only know if the try another one!!! Wow!!! Good job they aren't doctors! Can you imagine it. "Well i've no idea wh

  • nothing odd about it. its a characteristic of the tsi engine. happens across all the VwAG engines. there r thousands of threads out there with mk6 golf gti owners complaining of the same "rattle"

  • Wastegate linkage rattle as mentioned earlier in the thread. You need clip 06J145220A fitting to the linkage. Two minute job (from under the car)

Ok, good news so far. Dropped my car off this morning and spoke to one of the newer guys at Palmers, Doug, about this issue.

He said that he was aware of the problem as they has another customer with the same issue and, having test driven his car and heard the rattle at 2,500 revs, they were preparing to investigate the cause.

I mentioned the Service Bulletin & that Faintree Skoda had already done this modification / repair and he was very pleased. Might have saved them some investigation!

He has agreed to look into it while they have my car (2 days) and stay in touch.

(They have been very good about the other issue I mentioned earlier and have provided a courtesy car each time)

Fingers crossed - I'll keep you all in the loop.

Below is a copy of the e-mail Skoda sent to David Motton at WhatCar?

As discussed, SKODA customer care contacted Mark White yesterday and have confirmed that they will fit the clip to his Octavia vRS. The retailer will be in touch with Mark White to arrange a convenient date.

The retailer is happy to fit the clip to Mark's Octavia vRS in an attempt to stop this noise. Since this is the first time we've fitted the clip to an Octavia vRS, we cannot guarantee that the clip will stop the vibration/noise from the turbo.

I would like to make you aware that this is the first time this query has come to our attention and since we has been unable to re-create the noise at the retailer our technicians are still not sure what is causing it.

There is a possibility that the noise is coming from the rod attached to the turbo, which our technicians would describe as a characteristic noise of the engine. The retailer will continue to work with the customer until he is happy with the solution.

Our technicians are still looking into this query. If the clip proves to be effective then we may offer this solution through our retailer network early in 2012.

Thanks Romulus! Got the PM too. Am hoping to hear from Palmers this afternoon. Will let you know!

I've got this problem with my VRS which I picked up in Aug. It's been into the dealer 4 times, Palmers at Watford but still not been resolved.

Rob, are you dealing with Doug?? Spoke to him at length today & he mentioned another customer with the same problem! Will update fully later this evening!

Okay, so here's the update:

Took the vRS into Palmers, Watford yesterday morning for an unrelated issue (now sorted - thanks Doug).

I mentioned this issue and stated that it was an audible rattle between 2,000 & 3,000 revs. Doug at Palmers told me that he had another customer (possibly Rob1966 on here?) who had the same issue and that they were struggling to identify the cause. I pointed out that VW had found a fix and emailed a copy of this thread to him.

He was pleased with the detail provided (wastegate actuator rod, service bulletin etc) and stated that he would speak with Skoda on behalf of his other customer and me.

When I collected the car today, he told me that Skoda UK were aware of this issue but had decided it was a 'feature of the engine' (where have I heard that before??) and would not be offering the aforementioned fix. (Doug also said he had test driven my car and couldn't hear the rattle. Well, it was still there, as ever, on the way home and he will just have to come for a spirited drive with me to hear it!!).

I then re-directed Doug to this thread and the letter added to the thread today which was written by Skoda UK and sent to the WhatCar Helpdesk - thanks Romulus! I also mentioned that Faintree Skoda had already performed this fix with a Skoda-derived part. Doug now believes that Skoda will have to apply this fix to both my car and that of his other customer.

We'll see! Doug has agreed to bring this thread to the attention of Skoda UK and call me with the outcome ('either way' as he put it) tomorrow.

I believe that if the new vRS TSI owners stick together on this, Skoda should agree to this fix pretty quickly.

Yes, I'm dealing with Doug. I'll give you a call later to discuss.

Speak later

Rob

Good News!!

Skoda UK have agreed to Palmers applying this fix to mine and Rob's cars!

They may have to source the part via VW for now.

I have a metallic rattle on my 2007 2.0 TFSI vRS at a certain rev range. I pin pointed it to the mesh around the cat. I simply jacked it up and gave it a shake to hear the same noise. Nothing to worry about.

Different engine. This issue relates to the newer 2 litre TSI.

I think I'll wait for there to be an official technical article on this before I look at getting the work done.

My local dealership have been good in the past and I'm sure they would happily read through this thread.

I just think life will be a lot easier once there is an "official Skoda fix" listed on the system.

Is this noise only noticable when revved? Mine is quite noisey on tick over. Its a 2006, I compared it to another 2006 car and it is worse. Any tips on things to look for.

The rattle only affects cars with the new EA888 engine, those built after 2009.

It only affects Vrs fitted with TSI engine not TFSI, plus the noise you here on tick over is the sound coming from the 'high pressure' fuel rail.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dealers called me today (Netherlands) and the clip is in. Going there Thursday morning to get it fitted.

Will keep you posted.

Just got the clip installed and the rattle is completely gone.

Good news!

My dealer couldn't get the part from Skoda so is now sourcing it from VW.

My dealer needed to get this from the importer in the Netherlands, who also do Audi, VW and Seat.

Took since September to get the clip in though.....

Dealer called today. He has the clip. Booked in on Monday!

My 2006 tfsi is the same, reminds me of an old cavalier with the cam on its way out. I've had my car 2 1/2 years and it's always done it.

The car still pulls like a train.I just ignore it.

The rattle discussed in this thread only affects cars with the new EA888 engine (TSI), those built after 2009.

It is caused by a wastegate actuator rod vibrating at about 2,500 revs - see earlier in the thread for the full explanation.

VW have designed a clip which fits to the rod & prevents it rattling. Skoda have recently agreed to fit this clip to 2.0 TSI engines.
