Advice needed :) What cheap car next

Featured Replies

Hi

I have owned a kit car for 2 years however I sold mine in the September due to the amount it was costing me, £130 a month with loan and tax not counting constant upkeep, which was costly plus the 10 MPG! In July this cost me £250 in one month with petrol added on! this was just eating away at my finances and couldn't afford to have any fun, so I sold it, paid some stuff off and bought my lovely vRS but I am really missing a weekend open top car, but I don't have massive amount of funds to buy my dream weekend car!

I have a secure but not well paid job and my vRS isn't cheap, but with working with my finances I could accommodate 2500 - 3000 for a 2nd car.

Me and my girlfriend only have 1 car which is 80% of the time not an issue at all, but both getting a bit tired of never being able to do anything if the other person is doing something or if one person is off work the other person has to get the bus! we have to hot seat sometimes I'll go out she'll wanna go somewhere, I have to rush back and she jumps in car and goes! so we were thinking about a cheap 2nd car but then I thought it may be nice to combine with a nice summer car.

So I have done pricing up and I would love to give you a list of Porsches, Lotus etc but I can’t lol, so the 2 cars that I can fit the bill with are the MX5 and the MGTF that still have a bit of poke, open top and loads of them about

Is there anything I have missed?

Any experiences of these 2 cars?

Thank you

MX5, bloody good fun and likely to start in the morning without having blown it's head gasket. it's also fairly easy to work on.

The MG is also bloody lethal in the wet, whilst the MX5 merely wakes you up emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

yeah mx 5 is winning at the moment :) just gotta find a decent one , the forum is £33 a year!!

Of those two, get thte MX-5. RWD is much more fun and the car is far better to drive than the MGTF.

Simples. MX-5.

To be fair, the MGTF is rear wheel wheel drive too...

But the MX5 is a much better car to drive

Another vote for the Mazda here :)

Mazda.....or a Z3 2.8 you can get them quite cheap now, and a 1.9 for even less

i also agree on z3.

stick to a 1.9 120bhp rwd and very stable on motorways ect ex gf of mine had an mg and with the engine being in the centre the thing use to feel like it was about to take off!

now the bmw is planted just extremely long nosed!

check on forums before u buy anywhere else imo.

good luck

BMW are good at making inline-6 engines, you want the straight 6 not the wee 4 pot :p

It'll be an M52 or an M52TU depending on the age i think, and the TU is the preferred choice (Technical Update -- germans and their imaginations huh :p ), the most important change between the 2 is the introduction of Dual Vanos, over Single Vanos in the non TU lump. Vanos is what BMW call their variable valve timing technology, and the dual version adds variable exhaust valve timing into the mix. The difference is a ton more torque very low down the rev range -- you'll spend all your time below 2.5k rpm, and frequently cruise not much above 1k rpm. Of course when you give it the lead foot it'll snarl like a monster and stomp down the road.

Maintainance is quite sensibly priced on this engine and It's a chain drive for the cam shafts and oil pump.

BMW out of my price range start off about 3350 for a highish milage 1.9 which is no faster than the MX5

4995 for 2.8 one sooooo

I think i'll have to keep at the MX5 am also half tempted with a Alfa Spider! but I want a car I can relay on after having 2 kit cars both with problems! I have the fast diesel vrs as I didn't think I would miss the kit cars so the open top car is wind in my hair bit of fun on a weekend and I think MX5's quite close to a kit car I would guess!

of course if anyone is feeling in a giving mood i'll have an BMW :giggle:

Booo  finances suck when they don't allow us to do what we want :(

Taking the BMW fanboy tshirt off... Mazda would be my vote too, although i'd seek out an MGF with hydragas suspension for a test drive but wouldn't buy it coz i think if it's got the good suspension it's got the really crap engine :p

328i drop top? :giggle:

I did check the 328 out and they ain't too bad! but again a little expensive for a decent one anddddddddd its insurance group 17 :o unfortunitly on this on finances are the major part of life! mx5 1.6 is only 250 a year 3rd party!!! 1.8 300 a year ..... ;)

Hi,

Insurance may tip this over the edge but a colleague of mine (and the previous owner of my car) has just bought a 1990 Porsche 944 S2, really well made, pokey and a huge amount of torque far a petrol (3.0 litre, 211 BHP)

Had a few goes in it myself and have to say, very impressed, well made, very solid and cool enough not to look like a cheap banger.

He paid £4k but you pick them up for less

Worth a look IMO.

cheers
