RS ford, RS Skoda, RS Audi...

Featured Replies

Correct me if I'm wrong (because I think i just lost a bet over dinner!) BUT I though the fast skodas were called vRS because ford had the RS name copyrighted in the UK as the fast skodas are RS everywhere else! so how come Audi have the RS4 and RS6 ect?

PLease enlighten me.....

Can't enlighten you but what a good point....

Why indeed????

I heard a possibilty that Skoda did own the RS prefix, but allowed Ford to use it. But I don't know.

I know there is a nice Mk1 Focus RS for sale at a garage near me, might suit you.....looked it good shape when I drove past it yesterday.

Because they wish to remain exclusive?

cool, but I want to win my bet that ford have the RS name only in the UK..... (goes into research mode.....)

I always thought that the RS Audi used stood for Renn Sport.

Graham

Well Peugot have rights to names with three numbers with a '0' in the middle (306, 107 etc) as Porche wanted to use the name 901, but were told no, hence 911( thank you Forza for that fact!), so maybe legally RS'x' is different to 'RS'?

Not that that helps you at all, assuming it's even vaugley correct

keep it comming these things are usefull..... so if audis RS is RENN sport, and bothe the skoda and ford are RALLY sport, maybe thats why skoda couldn't use RS but Audi can?

any other ideas? (I've been on audi's website and they deffo have all the UK RS models on there.... hence why my collegue thinks he's won the bet.....)

I think Ford release RS models in Europe as well as the UK

but the rs for skoda is really short for vrs "victor rallye sport".....at least in this country.........

however i have seen european skoda's referred to as simply RS......if you look at clips on you tube they seem to be called rs.....also in Australia

You're forgetting Porsche, as well :)

Because its 'vRS' and 'RS4' and 'TTRS' none of them are just RS on its own? Maybe... :|

911 GT3 RS? :)

That's what i thought

911 GT3 RS? :)

But it's not called just RS, It's a GT3 RS B)

Was thinking this only this morning on my way to work as I saw an RS4, the only exception (or maybe not?)

I could think of was this, I just Wiki'd it to see that it was it's name.......

'The Mégane RS is available in three-door and five-door hatchback versions, both with the same engine and it is built in Renault's Dieppe factory, which is where most of their special and race cars are made '

The Renault Megane RS, but have Ford got their fingers in Renault?? I didn't think they did??

But isn't it the Megane RenaultSport in this country rather then the RS?

I was behind one the other week and it RS on the back, I'm sure of it, it stands for Renault Sport, but RS nonetheless.

Found an image of back of UK Megane, yep it's Renault Sport, but an RS with no pre-fix or numbers attatched...

..Ok it's got Renault sport in a box next to it but is still, arguably, labelled an RS, which is what some people

think Ford have rights to? I could make an RS and tell Ford it stands for Rusty Sherriffsbadge, would still

have RS on it.........discuss peeps :)

Yup. Ford own the "RS" trademark. Audi own "RS3" "RS4" etc. The ford TM was why we have VRS in the UK.

The Renault TM will be R.S. ;)

nice one, thanks for the replies :)

My MkI states Octavia RS on the V5.

This has been discussed loads of times. I think the 'Ford' thing is an urban myth.

The best answer I've heard is that RS stands for RennSport (German word for motor racing) and the 'v' is not a 'v' at all but the small symbol that's used above letters like 'S' in Czech (you'll see one above the 'S' on your Skoda badge) and is for the Skoda motorsport division (kinda like 'M' or 'STi'). Can't remember what that symbol's called but read that explanation in a comment by a Czech guy on a 'vRS chases a something or other down a motorway' YouTube video. Unfortunately I can't find it again now.

I think the fact that so many people call the car a VRS instead of RS plus the fact that no-one else does a 'VRS', so it stands out, meant that Skoda have given in and started calling it 'VRS' as well.

Ford's trademark registration of RS:

http://www.ipo.gov.uk/t-find-number?detailsrequested=C&trademark=1292115

Trademarks give the right to exclusivety, so the holder can take legal action if they feel an infringement has been made. However, if I was Ford back in 2000 I suspect I would have been a bit more reluctant to share the trademark with Skoda than I would have with Porsche - not saying that this is necessarily the case, but it could explain how some companies can use apparently similar trademarks...
