Handsfree Car Kit advice please - Octavia Mk2 drivers

I know that Ben installed a system in my car that's compatible with the Iphone, so I think it must be the GSMII type, I still have access to the phone book etc and it gives me the choice of loads of phones later on when I can afford to ditch the crappy Nokia 5800 that I've got now.

Its a pity you chaps are so far away as I'd like to have a gander and see how well it interfaces with an HTC and Iphone3gs etc

Just looking for a local dealer in Stoke !

What I'll try and do is see if I can get some photos done in the next couple of days & post them here, so you can see what appears on the Bolero.

Over the years I have owned several different vehicles and lots of different handsfree. I travel around 1000 miles a week so having a good handsfree solution is important to me. My opinion is this:

Bury CC9060. Absolutely Ace bit of kit. You talk to it around 10 words whilst driving and then that is the voice dialling set up. To dial someone in the address book simply press the touch screen and speak "Dial Fred Bloggs Mobile" and it does it. If dialling by hand the address book is arranged into alphabetical order and you just touch the letter of the alphabet to enter that area and then the scroll button until you find the entry you want. Far better sound wuality and microphone qaulity than the parrot and more robust a connection with my Blackberry.

Parrot CK3100. You have to give each entry you want to voice dial a tag. Very time consuming. To dial you have to press the centre button, rotate it to the letter in the alphabet and then press again to select, then rotate again till you find the entry then press to select. Very fiddly to use. Always seems to be dropping connections with phones and locking up needing restarts.

VW GSMII. No external device everything hidden away. Voice dialling has to be set up and tags entered same as parrot ck3100. Sound quality ace and absolute integration into the Audience MP3 Head unit I have. All controlled by steering wheel and r/h windscreen wiper stalk. Ben @ Shark fitted this for me.

If you do not want a extra display fitted I would recommend the Fiscon/GSMII solution. I you are happy with eh extra display I would recommend the Bury. Whatever solution you go for I would recommend on the following things:

1. The company use a fused power supply off the fusebox and NOT a scothlock connector into the CAN supply into the climate control!!

2. The company wire the sound output from the kit into the line in on the stereo and do not use the standard supplied "interrupt" kit which uses the handsfree kit to power the speakers. If you do this sound quality is appalling and you cannot use the stereo to adjust the call volume.

Hope this helps.

Tom

That's superb Tom Thanks!

Cant get more comprehensive than that!

:)

Just to add, the Parrot MKi9000 series have voice control that doesn't need training.

The 9000 doesn't have an external display, just the controls, the 9100 has a 2 line LED display, and the 9200 has a colour screen display. They also integrate with iPods etc.

Thats me fitted my fiscon kit now.

Completely hidden and have put the mic in the overhead light (factory fit location) and now the phone button on the bolero works  :giggle:

Nice kit, seems to work well. Call quality is high. Only thing i cant get it to do with my iphone is call with no number -- why would you want to call no number? -- with the iphone 3gs this fires up voice activation so i thought i was onto a winner, seems not. Will ping Kauftec and ask for a firmware update to allow this behaviour, see how it goes...

The 3g doesn't have voice activation, the 3gs does, Kauftec can't fix that for you... Or do you mean you have a 3gs and the voice activation part isn't working?

One more thing.........the Bury has 3 or 4 different colour settings for the display.....................and yes you guessed it, one of them is green. It blends in perfectly with pre-face lift dash.

see how well it interfaces with an HTC and Iphone3gs

iPhone 3GS with Fiscon Basic Plus:

+ Phonebook sync -- automatic, 1 prompt to confirm you want to "updated phonebook detected, download now?"

+ Normal handsfree functionality -- turn down the music to play the ringtone on incoming call etc. mute the music on answering, 6 shortcut numbers on bolero, easy navigation of the entire phonebook etc.

+ shows recently dialed / missed calls etc. *from the handset* e.g. there are not separate lists for when on handsfree

+ Very sharp call quality, even at speed. The overhead microphone location (inside the light) seems spot on

- No SMS facility, this is an iPhone limitation

- No voice dialing, this is a fiscon limitation when using an iphone 3gs

- no fancy extras, no party tricks. Just does what it says. The benefit is it's dead easy to use, there's nothing complex

Yep spot on. All i need is the firmware changed not to disable the call button when no number is entered. It might not be an easy fix for them, just depends on how they've implemented it i guess.

It's the same with my Nokia N97 and the fiscon, no voicedialling...I'm wondering if there's a short code using *'s, #'s and digits etc to activate voicedialling, in which case you could store it as a favourite number...will have to do more digging.

I wondered the same, maybe using 'p' pause or 'w' wait dialing. No joy though.

To be fair, I don't remember seeing anywhere in the Fiscon literature that it supports voice dialling... If it was mentioned and didn't work then you would have a right to be annoyed about it. Most bluetooth kits that support voice dialling are not using the phone for it, but comparing your spoken word to the address book it has downloaded from the phone and then initiating the call (unless it's one of the older kits that you have to train in which case it's comparing to the pre-recorded tags)

The Fiscon unit may never have this capability without a hardware upgrade to the unit itself. If there is a future firmware update to allow it then I will be in the queue for the firmware upgrade, but I certainly won't be holding my breath

Nah i've still got a right to be annoyed about it :giggle:

I'm not asking the fiscon kit to start supporting voice dialling itself, all i'm asking it to do is invoke the "dial" command over bluetooth to my iPhone 3GS -- which does support voice control & hitting dial via bluetooth headset is the way to trigger it.

The change i'm after should be small beer (although i don't know their implementation so it might not be), effectively all i need is the ability to hit dial with no number. The iPhone 3GS will take care of the rest

The iPhone implementation is top notch, the normal handsfree voice diallers dont work for me (strong scottish accent), but the iphone does.

Says you require MFSW?

:S

Nope, waplords car doesnt have one and it all works through Maxidot/Bolero.

Even if you didnt have Maxidot, Bolero operation will be fine :)

Was just going to add i have the Fiscon Basic Plus kit and it works perfectly with my iPhone 3GS, minus voice dialling but thats what the touchscreen is for on the MFD3. Plus you can also dial through the maxidot if you have it

It's easy to install yourself so dont pay anyone to do it. I did a tutorial here

Fiscon Kit Fitting

what is the difference between the basic and the basic plus fiscon, can they both be operated via the touch screen bolero?

If I remember correctly, the Basic requires MFSW and Maxidot but doesn't integrate into the Bolero/Columbus for control, but can be used with other head units e.g. Stream or Third party heads

Basic Plus can be controlled by the Head Unit and doesn't require MFSW to operate but only works with Bolero/Columbus in the Octy and the Superb

Hi all,

I realise this is a very old thread, but I'm getting a Motorola TK30 fitted to my '05 Octavia II Elegance later this week, and I just wanted to find out if what the thinking is behind these two recommendations made by Tom, so I can make sure they're being followed by my installer if necessary.

1. Is this a safety thing, and/or something that could potentially mess with the climate control if not done?

2. Why's the sound quality compromised if this isn't done? Just cos of the comparatively sub-par amp in the (in my specific case) Motorola?

Hoping I can get a response from someone! :-D

Cheers,

Jackalton
