MY HTC Desire arrived today and I've inserted the sim card of my old phone into it but I want to erase all of the old numbers on the sim card, any ideas on how to do it? emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

On the home screen, press phone and then the menu button. You should get a pop up with people as an option and go into it. Press menu again and you get the option to delete. Select it and choose the contacts you want to get rid of.

What will I need to do that?

What will I need to do that?

The various emulators are available on the market.. (gameboid, UAEdroid, Snesoid etc)

for the consoles, its just a case of putting some of the ROMS on your sdcard (i get mine from freeroms)

For the Amiga you first have to get hold of the kickstart roms which are a bit more troublesome to get hold of these days altho i can email them over if you want them.. then its a case of getting the adf disk files (again from freeroms)

Is it just me but I've tried to post on the board using a HTC Desire and I can't because the keyboard won't appear! emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

Tap in a text box, and it'll pop up ;)

Tried that & it doesn't pop up (in all meanings!) emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Try double tapping on the text box instead.

I'm typing this on my new Desire which arrived today! Upgraded from an iPhone 3g. I haven't had the chance to fully explore the desire yet, but first impressions are good.

I've tried to and it just won't do it, I'm getting really ****ed off with it!

So why does this thing only like working in portrait mode?

Why is it I've just had to go to the PC & edit it! emoticon-0183-swear.gif

Well I give up!

I've tried double tapping in this Fast Reply box & it goes nowhere, then it will accept text, but as soon as I tap the post button, I get an error message saying "You must enter a post." even though I've just managed to type a whole load of words.

If I don't get that it then goes to a review of the whole thread! WTF!

I'm starting to wonder if I did make the right choice in choosing an android phone over an Iphone! emoticon-0124-worried.gif

This phone is baffling me, one minute it will post the the next it won't.

Are you using the quick reply, or the reply "in post" button? The quick reply needs to open a separate editor and that may be causing an issue.

I have been on Android for 12 months now. Love it and not going to anything else.

Chris

Well, after having my Desire for over a week now I feel I'm in a good position to compare it to my iPhone 3GS.

Overall I'm very pleased with it - it does all the stuff the iPhone couldn't and where I was expecting it to not be as good it has surpassed my expectations but there are some negatives. The below are my opinions, nothing more so don't take offence if you don't agree. :)

1. Build quality. Doesn't feel as well put together as the solid block of iPhone. The screen, the metal bezel, the weight, the solid buttons, the (really useful) silence switch (which I miss), the home button....all feel solid as hell on the iPhone but the buttons feel a tad loose in comparison on the Desire.

2. The OS. It's WAAAY more flexible than the iPhone OS but this results is a much less polished experience. It feels good but slightly rushed in the way it's been put together. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design of the layout and feel of the iPhone OS and it feels very slick to use. It's more than just style over substance, it really is nice to navigate round and use but perhaps a little over simplified with what you can do with it in terms of customization. Also, the iPhone took me about a day to fully get my head round. The Desire still makes me open the pdf manual every now and again to see how to do things, or check if you actually can do them. It's a different mindset with the back/ home/ menu buttons but once you get the idea it kind of falls into place.

3. Screen accuracy. The iPhone again wins here, and you notice it most when using the on screen keyboards and clicking small links in the web browsers. I've tried calibrating the screen keyboard on the Desire but it's not helped much. The HTC's keyboard is good but i find myself making a lot more mistakes and doing silly things like pressing the full stop rather than the space bar etc. Having said that the dictionary is excellent and it can usually sort out my mistakes. The screens themselves though are clearly very different with AMOLED and a much higher res on the Desire, the screen makes photo's look gorgeous. Going back to the iPhone they look a little dull in comparison but still not too bad. For it's day the iPhone screen was good but it's a little dated now. iPhone 4 should correct that but get ready for £££££.

4. Camera. This is where the Desire beats the iPhone but it's not perfect. The flash is mental - range is critical otherwise it looks like you're taking photos of the sun. Also there's a slight delay with the shutter and the photo that appears on the screen is about a second after the button has been pressed. But there are options with the camera which are lovely and you can change the exposure metering etc. OS 4 will bring a digital zoom but it's still limited in comparison. Also the frame rate on the desire is lower, 24fps compared to 30fps from what I've read although I've not had chance to test this myself.

5. Bluetooth. Despite some fun in getting it to sync contacts with my Parrot, the Desire is brilliant here. Bluetooth file transfer (yaaay), and also my Sony Bluetooth Headphones can skip tracks - the iPhone could only play and pause and from what I read that was by design. One of THE major let downs with the iPhone OS and all OS 4 will bring is bluetooth keyboard connectivity. Sigh.

6. Photo gallery. You can actually sort your photo's, rotate them and even check a files properties with the Desire (to find out when it was taken etc - you wouldn't believe how often I needed to do that) - try doing any of that on the iPhone........all you get is a huge list of photos and you spend forever scrolling. Sad as the gallery is otherwise very smooth.

7. GPS. On the Desire it works. I can even get a signal in my living room. Could hardly get a signal stood outside in the middle of a field on a clear day with the iPhone. NDrive on both, you can see the difference with the Desire being usable and the iPhone not (without the overpriced TomTom cradle which is so flimsy).

8. Apps. iPhone wins. Sure, there are a lot of apps on the Android Market but the choice is still a bit limited and the apps lack the polished feel of the iPhone ones. Some feel a little 'Symbian-ish' although I'm sure this will improve with time. Having said that the Android apps are tiny, but it's just as well as on 2.1 you can't install them to the SD card, only the piddly internal memory. As popularity of these devices increases the apps on the Market will increase I'm sure. Most of the useful ones are there though.

9. Access to the internal memory. Wanna copy things to iPhone? iTunes only, or USB mode just for camera roll photos. The Desire, attach in USB mass storage mode for full SD card access. Desire is a lot more flexible here but not as snazzy for managing your music collection, although DoubleTwist and MediaMonkey do get round this to a degree. i just copied my files over and they worked fine.

10. Exchange support. HTC have made it work, althought out of the box it's very limited. 2.2 makes full support native which should make things interesting. The iPhone was good and felt ok but was a bis disjointed in this regard sometimes - take meeting requests for example. You saw them as just ordinary emails in the inbox, and had to open the calendar app to see the request and accept/ decline etc. On the Desire it sees those as meeting requests in the inbox and you can accept etc from there which is a little more straightforward. Having said that, Gmail was a separate account on the iPhone. On the Desire it's a totally separate app. WTF? Surely mail is mail? The connection differences shouldn't need a separate app. Friendstream sorts that for social networking but mail still needs multiple apps. :(

11. Home screens. Well, where do I start. Soo much choice on the Desire with icons, widgets, folders, wallpapers......on the iPhone? Just icons. Lots of them, and no nice way to move screens unless your fingers are tiny and you can hit those little dots. Even then you need to remember what screen you want. On the Desire there's an overview you can use. OS4 will correct a bit of this (folders and wallpapers) but that's about it from what I gather.

Oh and did I mention live wallpapers? Drool......mmm.....animation......we like.....

There are other little things like the use of a standard USB connector on the Desire which is nice as not everyone has an iPod one kicking about so you quite often end up stuck if you need a charge etc. Also the fact you can change the battery yourself (means you can carry a spare too) and remove the SD memory which is handy too.

I will be applying IOS 4 to my 3GS when it comes out just to see what it's like but otherwise it's been relegated to a glorified iPod touch that sits in my JBL dock until i decide what to do with it. Might actually sell it and just buy an iPod touch for that purpose. We'll see.

It doesn't seem to matter which method of posting I try, I reckon 99,8% of the time comes up with "Tip: click inside this box to load editor" in the box, I double tap to do it and the box flashes green & no keyboard appears and it won't appear no matter how many times I try to double tap it.

Even when I do get it to take the text, as soon as I press post my text goes into the ether & I get a blank box with the error "You must enter a post".

I'm getting more & more frustrated by it.emoticon-0183-swear.gif

Just typing this in from the G1 with no problems, may be an issue with input settings?

Chris

Just to confirm, posting this with my desire using dolphin browserHD, no problems

Well I'm typing this in on the dolphin browser, I'm wondering if it will make it!

It's a shame you're having so many issues trying to get it to post Evening Star... Hope you get it sorted out in the end.

I'm still finding my way around my Desire only having had it a day and a bit, but so far a big improvement over my old iPhone 3G. Yes there are a few things I've come accross which I preferred on the iPhone, Chrispy covers most of these points quite well, but overall I'm very happy with my decision to go Android. :)
