Octavia 1.8DSG

Featured Replies

I have just ordered a new model Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG with the hope that the MPG will, at the least ,be in the high 30's. I had planned to consider a 2.0CR diesel but it was not available, I was told, until July at the earliest and as I only do between 10 &12000 miles annually the petrol, engine seemed the sensible option. The brochure quotes a combined figure of 42.8 MPG and while I dont expect to achieve this I will be extremely dissappointed if I return much less. I have heard a couple of opinions that suggest an average of around 30 is more realistic and if this was to prove true I would be annoyed.

I do drive fairly conservatively and don't have a heavy right foot so I am hopeful of a sensible MPG but opinions from others that may already have this car would be appreciated.

Think it will depend on the type of journey you do. If mainly town driving etc then you're only going to get low 30s, but if you do longer journeys, will prob be high 30s.

I've just ordered a 1.4 dsg and do mostly short journeys - I expect to average around 35, which is the published urban figure. I currently have the 1.9 pd and average 43.5 in that - exactly the published urban figure. I get much higher on long runs, but my majority driving of short journeys keeps the average down. I don't use a heavy foot either.

I'm getting approx 33 mpg average on 1.8 TSI with manual gearbox, my best on a long journey was 39 mpg.

I think you may struggle to get high thirties unless you always drive very gently and almost all of your journeys are favourable for fuel economy - the fuel computer tends to be a bit optomistic.

I seldom get better than 36mpg on my 1.8 TSi manual and the 33mpg quoted by slick123 is probably more realistic. I find it is only possible to get the fuel economy to 40mpg if you do longish journeys at low speed (45mph max), on one such journey on narrow twisty roads in the highlands, I managed 44mpg but that dropped back to about 40mpg after the motorway journey home.

I have a 1.8TSi DSG and a light right foot so hopefully this helps.

After 2000 miles I'm averaging a brim to brim of 33.3mpg (low 31.5, high 36.5) which is 80% local driving 20% long. My fuel computer overreads by about 7% and the best I've achieved so far was an indicated 47.7 on a trip round the M25. On my last fill up I got a trip computer (memory 2) MPG of 39.2 against a brim figure of 36.5 with a mix of 50/50 driving. The DSG does it's best to keep consumption down by selecting high gears to keep the engine in the 1500-2000 rpm rev band and I'm finding that consumption IS gradually improving as the engine loosens up but not enough to ever see 42.8 except on the motorway!

Still love it though. :-)

Excellent choice of engine, I picked up my 1.8 DSG nearly 2 weeks ago, its such a pleasure to drive very smooth and quite and the acceleration is fantastic. According to the official figures the mpg should be better than the manual gearbox and my average which includes a bit of motorway and some mixed driving around Southampton is actually in the low 40's. Unless you spend a lot of time in traffic or are only doing 2-3 miles per trip I think that you should get around 36-38 without any problems.

Good luck with the new car, how long do you have to wait?

Mine's got just under 2k on the clock now & to be honest, I'm not taken by the 1,8 TSi DSG, it lacks the real emoticon-0146-punch.gif (Torque) that my old car (VW Golf 140TDi) had, I find that I regularly have to switch to manual mode to get what I want out of it like a quick overtake.

The economy isn't brilliant either, on a recent trip to the West Somerset/North Devon coast & back 400miles I had to fill up again on the way back, something I never had to do with the Golf!

I find with the 1,8TSi I have to fill up twice a month now rather than once every 30-40 days with my old VW, so it's not good for me. If I have another Skoda, I'll be going back to diesel (probably a CR170) as it's much more economical & fun to drive than the 1,8.

I've had my 1.8TSi DSG for 5 months now (only done 900 miles :giggle: ) and it has averaged about 25mpg

but I only do local journeys in and around Milton Keynes where theres lots of roundabouts.

It is returning about the same mpg as my previous 1.8 manual Focus so I'm pretty impressed tbh as I expected an auto to eat fuel. :)

Thanks for your reponse which reassures me a little. Ordered car 2 weeks ago and was quoted 14-16 weeks but heard via another dealer that 8-10 weekis might be possible.

Best regards.

We get 43 MPG on a run on our TSI engined VRS. Only 25 mpg round town so suprise suprise we avoid driving it round town. Lucky to have a little Fiat Grande Punto for those journeys. I have a DSG Toledo and mostly leave it in auto but sometimes use the tiptronic function and do free-wheel when I can to as I do with the VRS. I average 49 mpg on that 140 hp diesel VAG version. Would have thought you would get 45 mpg on a run in the 1.8T DSG. Trick is also to use the A road cut throughs rather than Motorway sometimes too. I think Tom Tom has some of these IQ economy routes. 1.8T sounds brilliant combination of performance and economy and remember diesel at one point was more than 10p a litre more than petrol. I think you will probably be pleasantly suprised.

I've now done about 1800 miles on my new 1.8dsg now. Brimming indicated consumption of 35mpg overall. On longer journeys - of about 60 miles return which include a bit of town, some country roads and some A roads I'm getting between 39mpg and 41mpg. I've been repeating that identical journey for many days over the last week and that is what I've been getting. I also drive as you state above. However I seem to find that one can be a bit too gentle and getting the car rolling with some momentum seems to be more economical than being over gentle. I am ultra satisfied with the car - having had a 1.9tdi octy for the past 11 years (which I also liked).

Anyone know the ingear times for the 1.8 TSI. I want to compare them with the 2.0 PD engine.

30-50 in 3rd and 4th

50-70 in 5th and 6th

30-70 through gears

Thanks

Agreed - I also found this out recently and it does seem more economical to get up to speed briskly rather than sedately - and a bit more fun too!

I reckon I'm averaging around 36-37mpg according to the trip computer, but it's definitely the short and urban drives which bring it down. Now my 1.8 dsg is loosened up I regularly do better than 40 mpg on my longish commute of mixed driving: urban, extra-urban, and motorway with and without aditional speed restrictions.

I also notice the economy falls away quite quickly as you exceed 70ish mph even if at a steady cruise.

The engine offers a great drive for reasonable economy overall and I'd recommend it so long as most of your driving is out of town.
