Does anyone know if there is a maximum amount of folders you can have in a directory in WIN 2K?

Help me please!!!!!!!

256 Possibly ?

I tried this once by creating new folders and something made it go back to the first folder after about 40.... (folder in a folder etc)

What file system?

Basically we're importing a load of reference data onto a drive and it's started failing (the import has)

On the last one to work the folder size is 2.44 GB with 751 files and 53 folders.

Now it has started failing the folder size is 2.72 GB with 1,048 files and 52 folders.

It appears the problem is a size issue but not sure where.

Shouldn't've thought those sort of file structures should present problems, it's smaller than my por...er, filesystems I've seen... :D

Rob.

The max filename length is 255 characters, BUT this includes the path to the file so the folder names take up some of the above. If your filenames are to long, this will cause problems.

 :naughty: @ Rob

Yes, this sounds a more likely possibility. What was the error?

lol @ nick. Shouldnt the O/S truncate the name of the file to accomodate this, they usually do when you copy from DOS 8.3 format to anything else below across filesystems?

File names are all eight digit.

No errors (haven't written them yet :D) but I can see the transfer is failing using some other software. If I remove a file it will download a few more files and then fail again so it's something to do with space.

To be honest there are only so many files because the company I'm doing this for haven't bothered to do any housekeeping for three years.

Cant you use norton ghost to ghost it to an image but cutting it at the 2GB limit of FAT32?

Did you calculate the 2.72GB, or is this actually a decimal number of KB? Try dividing by 1048576 to see if it's actually 2GB really?

Unless you have *very* good reasons not to, I would recommend using NTFS on any new Windows 2000 / XP installations - you will avoid all these types of problem and be able to configure your system more securely.

If all else fails use a linux live CD to do it. Works a trick and displays more than winblows :)

We have an NTFS folder on one of our systems that contains all letters sent to members of the public from one of our apps. We recently archived a whole year of data, but even now the folder contains 37,364 word documents in one folder.

Can't change it as it's a new system purchased from an Indian company that isn't working correctly.

Interestingly enough alot of the code has comments in it in Portugese!!!!!!!

The data is coming in from a unix server and it's full of old crap they really should clear out.

Well you say "can't" ....

convert C: /fs:ntfs /x

But I agree you need to be sure of what you're doing first.

;)

I'd change it if I could.

Whole thing has been done cheaply - just found they've tried to used java statements in VB

One of the bosses has just said it was a cheap solution and the guys who came over from India wore nice clothes but apart from that they don't have a good word to say about them.

Oh yes.

Apparently the Indian company were going to support it for twelve months and it was all agreed. They then quadrupled their support cost and when the client refused to pay for their support and withdrew they Indian lot kept the source code and wouldn't give it to the client. It all ended up in court and to be honest I don't think the source code they've been given is the same as the implementation code.

I've given up on it anyway until they clean their data.

Ta for you help chaps.

IIRC doesnt Fat32 (and poss ntfs) only support a maximum path depth of 255 chars?
