Fabia VRS Oil change interval

Featured Replies

Took a quick look through the service history.

The Oil has been changed every 15,000 miles, usually main dealers but the previous 2 have been an independent garage. Using the correct grade of oil 505.01

With it being a "turbo" to my understanding oil should be changed very frequently as in 5000-10000 miles at the max as an investment simply to extend the life of the turbo in particular, and its a benefit to the engines life.

I usualy service my car every 8000-10000 miles in my past cars but they were not turbo & never had a problem with the engines.

Would any of you say 15,000 is on the late side for an oil change? I want the turbo to last as long as possible, I dont want the turbo to be failing because of my own mistake.

I dont use the revs above 2000rpm until the temp is at 90 from a cold start with gentle acceleration, and I always wait a minute after a drive for the turbo to cool down, this in return looks after the turbo according to google.

Its now on 65k driving fine, my daily commute is 30 miles a day motorway.

If any of you technical heads could recommend when the oil should be changed, or what sort of intervals you are using..

Thanks

its probably open a bit to personal preferences...for how much oil is its prob better to change every 10,000/yearly and be on safe side but there again every 15,000 isnt way to long to change..

I change mine every 5k just to be on the safe side :) rather run the car on clean oil than dirty old stuff

Was it changed at 15K miles by Skoda? It is very strange if it was because in all of Skoda's literature it states 10K or every year, unless on variable servicing (which is 10K-20K). The 505.01 oil is not suitable for variable servicing (you need 504.00 or 507.00 long life stuff). Also I'm sure I have read on here that the vRS did not have the option for variable servicing anyway.

My advice is to change it every 10K miles or year which ever comes first with a good quality 505.01, 5W-40 oil.

I dont use the revs above 2000rpm until the temp is at 90

Do you just drive on tickover at first?! It must take ages to warm up lol

Its got Skoda stamps in the service book, I dont know what interval it was set to but definatly 15k since its had its services

I intend to stick with the 10k services

On my commute: I stay under 2k rpm takes about 10 mins to warm up but its not bad considering the speed limit is 30mph for a good 2/3 miles in 4th/5th gear its under 2k anyway so, once its warm it gets a nice blast on the motorway slip road upto the speed limit of course :giggle: so my turbo gets the chance to warm up before its used

General driving: My driving style has changed because of my 5 month old baby im more gentle on the throttle, which in return gives the turbo to warm up  boring but it changes you..

Yeah i noticed that too. I just struggle to keep the rev`s that low all the time, feels like i`m mullering my dmf, esp at 30mph in 4/5!

1st gear I use up to 2.5k, rest of the gears is always under 2k around town/below 50mph (unless I playing about ofc! ). My avg is 29mph and i get ~51-59mpg on the computer (realistically tho I assume its nearer 40 mpg). It takes 5 mins to get warm? :wonder:

Lol not everyone drives it like they stole it :giggle:

I change mine every 10k, which for me is roughly every 4 months

Change my oil every 3k miles, have done on all my cars.

Years ago I read an article by Bill Blydenstein (Vauxhall tuner) saying this was the single most important thing you could do to extend the life of an engine. Essentially like having a blood transfusion!

All depends on the road if its a flat road 4/5th gear is no prob doin 30-40mph, its when the the roads get a hill you consider shifting obviously to avoid strain on the DMF

My daily commute is mainly flat out roads so I get away with it...

For usual driving with traffic you will probably notice your revs stay lower so its not all that bad for the turbo warm up time

I'm just a little paranoid because of the storys I have heard of the Fabia Vrs turbo failing for fun.. Im just taking a little extra care to see if it makes a difference I would be more than happy if it lasted uptil 120k for me thats 4 years approx 14,000 miles a year.. + its an expensive bill you would rather avoid by being a little careful

Vauxhall probably needs the regular oil changes just to keep it ticking over :giggle: but what he said is true oil is the blood of an engine.

My past Honda VTEC engine was serviced every 10-12k the mechanic who did my timing belt was amazed how clean the internals were when he took the rocker cover off.

Turbo are a different ball game, I believe the subarus and evo & other high pefromance cars need a regular oil change thats understandable because they are high performance cars.

Fabia is a winner for me 50mpg 10k oil changes what more could you want

When the engine is still warming up I try not to push it too hard and certainly avoid going over 2.5k rpm but i dont make it labour too much in a high gear as that is bad. I allow it to cool down after a long run. Although i know of other vRS owners who probably don't, yet so far doesnt seem to have caused a problem. It may do later...who knows for sure.

I change my oil every 3-4 months. I usually buy 16 litres(4x4ltres) of 5w40 505.01 at £48. So have plenty in my garage to then take it to my mechanic and ask him to do the change.

It's just a habit for me,regularly oil changes and I believe doing so will help prolong the engine life and protect those internals inc turbo

personally, id say 15k is pushin it a bit, but thats just my opinion

Skoda say every 10k or 1 year

just cost me £50 for a gallon today....aint cheap the good stuff... :(

thats a rip off. I can get a 25ltr drum of miller longlife 505.01/507 for £45 inc vat. retailers and factors stick on loads of profit. i'm still using Q8 at moment but when that runs out i may get the millers. Both do their own blending and source base oils whereas with brands like quantum, it is just that a brand and you don't know where the base oil is sourced.

jesus, where was that from and what have you bought !

I've noticed that Tescos has its own brand of Fully Synthetic 5W-40 oil.

Fairly good price but have no idea what the 'quality' is like. Anyone tried this on a VRS?

Are some 5W-40 oils better than others?

Redfabvrs, I think you are worrying just a little too much. Skoda servicing and oil changing at 15000 miles ain't so bad judging by your driving style and the fact you have no power mods. Out of the thousands of forum users here there are only a few turbos that have failed, thousands have not, you only read posts of the failures not the ones who don't have any trouble. Carry on driving and enjoy your VRS, and for gods sake STOP WORRYING!

Oh, just noticed you have a Red one, they are trouble. :smirk:

Yes some are indeed better than others, it usually boils down to quality of base oil and additives. I've seen comparisions of base oils and you will find the better ones are nice and white whereas cheaper ones are darker colored. I would stick with known brands personally.

The Tesco oil meets VW505.01 spec?

You checked that before you made the post?

Let me take a wild guess.....that's a no on both counts.

Apparently the Quantum Platinum oil smells like Shell oil (apparently, a lot of them have their own smell - don't know how accurate this is). Having said that, I would doubt VW risk selling dodgy oil (as Quantum is part of VAG).

Quantum have been in the past made by shell (perhaps even now) but this could vary year to year as depends who ends up with the contract to make Quantum. They go out to tender each year. Oil smells tend to be pretty much the same as what you are smelling is sulphur usually. If Quantum are currently made by shell then yes its good stuff.

Quantum was made by Castrol at some point, you can buy Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 VW 507.00 for £32 for 5l or £8.50 for 1 l bottle from ASDA...
