Ashtray Cover Removal Superb II

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to remove the front ashtray cover on my Superb II as my work parking permit has disappeared behind it under the trim. I placed the permit on the ashtray cover when I removed it from my old car at the dealer, forgot it was there, opened the ashtray and it went up under the trim.

Is it easily removed or should I face the grim faced permit controller and beg her for another permit?

Thanks,

Anthony.....

I removed mine recently to fit a taxi radio in the same place.

Presuming you have the same set up as mine and is not automatic ..... & If I remember correctly:

Remove the gearstick shroud -

Slide open the ashtray lid . Place your fingers under the chrome strip of the gearstick surround at the very top where it meets the ashtray and prise it upwards.

You may have to do this very gently and work your way around all of the chrome edging to pop it out.

You may find it easier to also remove any of the blank buttons.... these just pop out.

The gearstick shroud can then be freed.

This will reveal two screws that retain the ashtray housing. The housing is the whole unit which includes the sliding lid.

Remove screws.

You may be abe to get access to the disc you lost at this point because the housing unit can now be moved around.

However, there is a connection to the 12v suppy for the auxillary. So, if you need to competely remove the housing unit this connection will need to be disconnected.

You will now have to get your fingers under the ashtray housing and disconnect the white pastic connection for 12v suppy for the auxillary.

You may need a torch to see where this unit disconnects and a screwdriver to genty prise the connection apart.

I havent needed to refit the housing unit as there is a taxi radio no in place so just fit in reverse order although you may have a slight problem in reconnecting the 12v auxillary supply. However, you may be able to get better access to this connection by popping out the card that is fitting on the driver side between the carpet and the underdash. Just give it a gentle tug and it will pop out.

Looking at the above I think I'd just ask for a new bloody permit! :o

Actually it is quite easy
