Hifi of Yesteryear vs Today's effort!

Well I had another CD player die last night...   It's the Teac CD-P1260 and is only 5 years old so not too happy really.

Not sure if it's related but the CD jumped and then continued playing so my daughter took the CD out to clean it and that was it - it refuses to read the CD with a  'No Disc' error...

Annoyed as with the current electronics shortage as the cheapest replacement I can find is a Tibo (never heard of them) at £180...

That's a pain, I don't know if you'd consider going with a second hand model though, but for consideration my CD player is an oldie actually, a 1989 Denon DCD-810, cost me £20 about 6 years ago, still going strong. No digital output, just RCA. One of the best I've owned however, compared to my Technics SL-PD7A at least.

Maybe not quite as sophisticated as you lot with your expensive Hi-Fis since I'm a bit of a tightwad and operate on a tight budget anyway. So I present to you all one of the critical components of my stereo system, my 1981 Technics RS-M215 tape deck. It works and cost me £18. I can't complain :D

You could buy a Panasonic DVD player for £25 at Currys. They have them in stock and thy play CDs

The rock was a gift from my best mate, Andy who said he didn't know what to get me, he called it 'frock' as it's a frog-rock. :D

I shall keep that in mind. We've also got a running gag where we buy each other a packet of Werther's Originals for almost every occasion, been like that for the seven years I've known him. :D

Just as a side note, he's vegetarian and always used to get a baked potato from the school canteen, so I reckon he'd get that joke too.

I have gone backwards. Late 70s I had a Goodmans 110 amp (as I worked for Thorns so got good deal on a refurb) Wharfedale Teesdale SP2 speakers and BSR Quanta 700 turntable. Changed the Goodmans amp for Technics SUV-450 class AAA and found the difference amazing. Bought a Technics SLP-222 CD player and loved my set up. From then on a retrograded by changing the speakers for smaller JPW AP2s and the amp to a Cyrus One. Went to Best Buys as it was shutting down and bought KEF iq10s at a knock down price as the sealed box design of the JPWs lost dynamics and sounded trebly powered by the Cyrus. I then stuffed the separates in the loft and bought a JVC midi-system. Nowadays I have an Onkyo a-9010 with Onkyo C-N7050 streamer come CD player. I need bigger speakers to get more bass but stuck on what to buy as replacements.

Yeah - currently scouring Ebay for options but it may be that a new one goes on the Christmas List...

Good point and reminder on the DVD player though!  I do have one in the lounge already but it would need a looooonnnng cable as it's on the other side of the room but also have a Tesco's basic DVD player in the kid's room that I could temporarily re-purpose until something crops up!

If you are looking for a second hand one but don't want to run the risk of buying a lemon on eBay, take a look at http://www.retrotechaudio.co.uk/currently-for-sale.html

They serviced my Thorens turntable and I bought a nice Technics CD player from them. Call and ask to speak to John, I have found them to be knowledgeable and reasonable, they have some CD players on their website.

I might also bookmark this crowd. @ChrisRJ

Had a laugh last night...   SWMBO noticed what music my eldest daughter was listening to and commented that if she liked that sort of music then she might like Gary Moore and I suggested she might like some of the late 80's stuff we have on vinyl and cassette tapes and some of our old 'mix tapes'.  I had to explain the last one and eventually dug out an old 1980's walkman, chucked some batteries in it and fired it up...

Anyhow, the drive belts were knackered and disintegrated so I took it apart and bunged in a couple of rubber bands.  It worked alright but the sound was full of wow and flutter and extremely amusing!

Anyhow - new drive belts have been ordered because apparently tapes are making a comeback and my daughter is now interested in having a listen to all things 80's...

I didn't get to experience tapes first hand (besides in Mum's bottle green Astra) until I got that Technics DV280 system from my Mum when I was about 12. So much like your daughter, I'm one of the ones who enjoys "older" music and some cassettes now and again. I often buy and sell 'em online as I can get them cheap often.

I liked the black one so much I bought the silver one...

@skomaz made me think of my walkmans (walkmen?) :)

Borrowing my Granny's (once mine) Technics RS-TR474M2 for recording an album. Forgot how good it could make a tape sound with the ATC auto-calibration. Recording Deacon Blue to a 2nd hand BASF LH-EI via Spotify.

Featuring Archie as a photobomb. :)

Fixed it!!  😀

Finally got round to taking it apart and noticed that the ribbon cable to the laser head seemed to be kinked and felt cracked.  So I took it off, straightened it out and used a bit of sellotape to strengthen it and hold it together.  Reassembled it all and it now works perfectly.

New ribbon cable on order though just in case.

Good tape decks those!!....If you're ever interested in buying... I have a box of sealed & unused TDK SA90 tapes...I need to get them back on Gumtree...

I am quite interested in the SAs, some of my favourite cassettes, those. :)

My Granny has the 474, I have an RS-B205 in my room and an RS-BX404 in the "office" mated with an SL-PD7A, plus the knackered RS-DV280 built into my stereo (which is where the 205 will plug into once it's been fixed). My Mum has my old RS-M215, my Kenwood KD-37R and a Fisher CA36 amplifier paired to a set of cheap Sanyo speakers, sounds okay.

So we're no strangers to Technics tape decks. There's some old Denon stuff up the loft too, but the 3-head tape deck is FUBAR electronically speaking.

I'll have to dig out the ad I had prepared for Gumtree..I'll pm you tomorrow.....

The only tape deck & record deck in the house are the old 1980's B&O....I'm usually CD, or FLAC on a USB stick...which is Denon equipment playing through a set of heavily modified Monitor Audio speakers...

Thanks! :)

Sounds like an amazing setup. I have a Denon DRM-700 3-head tape, DCD-810 CD, and the 260 series tuner IIRC. All matches. It was just flung together with the Kenwood TT and the Fisher amp many moons ago. :)

Thought I would bring this old thread back up again.

I've really got back into old Hifi, and have built up quiet a collection of old kit, however I do use modern speakers rather than old.

Some of my equipment, in a list, will add some pictures if there is interest.

Music Centre

Toshiba SM3100 from around 1976

Boombox

National Panasonic RS-4350LJ from the late 1970s.

Reel to Reel

Akai 4000DS MK2 from around 1972

CD Players

Pioneer PDM-6 multidisc CD player from the mid 80s.

Marantz CD65DX from the early 1990s

Amplifiers

Memorex (Realistic) STA-2380 from the late 1980s

Marantz PM35 from the late 1980s

Cassette Decks

Pioneer CTS-610 from the 1990s

Pioneer CTS-440S from the 1990s

Yamaha KX393 from the 1990s

Sony TC-RX50 from the late 1980s

Marantz SD35 from the late 1980s

I have a NAD one somewhere here as well.

There are multiple turntables, from modern ones like my Project Debut Carbon Elite SB back to my Pioneer PL400 Direct Drive from 1976, 5 in total.

Speakers, I have Cambridge Audio SX80 floorstanders on the Memorex and Monitor Audio Bronze 5 floorstanders on the Marantz.

All kit in regular use except the NAD which has issues on the takeup clutch and the boombox which annoyingly needs the amp section recapping on the left channel.

Ashamed to admit I've owned none of these actually. Also those NAD decks fetch a pretty penny these days. :)

He he...   Boom ox...   Love it!   I don't think I can post what some people used to call them as its not politically correct these days.

I've got something similar to your Panasonic that I use in the garage...   An old Sony CFM-23L that has two speakers but is mono...   I remember buying it and being torn between it and another less well known make that had proper stereo speakers.

I've also got an ancient Panasonic radio in there as well

A few years ago I bought this off eBay (it was brand new, still had all the plastic wrapping on it) and it had the best sound of any speaker setup I've ever owned. It was so loud it was fantastic! The bass was nuts but not over-bearing.

Selling it on was one of my biggest regrets.

I remember those flooding eBay a few years back. I got one of the Osaka ones and it had already gone to **** in its box so never got to use it on the cassette. :crying:

... did get to rock the house with the mic in and an iPod though. :)
