Here's what it does

For those that cant see pics because the Fun police say so here are the changes

This update contains new features including:

Safari Reader: Click on the new Reader icon to view articles on the web in a single, clutter-free page.

Improved Performance: Safari 5 executes JavaScript up to 25% faster than Safari 4. Better page caching and DNS prefetching speed up browsing.

Bing Search Option: New Bing search option for Safari's Search Field, in addition to Google and Yahoo!.

Improved HTML5 support: Safari supports over a dozen new HTML5 features, including Geolocation, full screen for HTML5 video, closed captions for HTML5 video, new sectioning elements (article, aside, footer, header, hgroup, nav and section), HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource, WebSocket, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, and HTML5 Ruby.

Safari Developer Tools: A new Timeline Panel in the Web Inspector shows how Safari interacts with a website and identifies areas for optimization. New keyboard shortcuts make it faster to switch between panels.

Other improvements include:

Smarter Address Field: The Smart Address Field can now match text against the titles of webpages in History and Bookmarks, as well as any part of their URL.

Tabs Setting: Automatically open new webpages in tabs instead of in separate windows.

Hardware Acceleration for Windows: Use the power of the computer's graphics processor to smoothly display media and effects on PC as well as Mac.

Search History with Date: A new date indicator in Full History Search shows when webpages were viewed.

Top Sites/History Button: Switch easily between Top Sites and Full History Search with a new button that appears at the top of each view.

Private Browsing Icon: A “Private” icon appears in the Smart Address Field when Private Browsing is on. Click on the icon to turn off Private Browsing.

DNS Prefetching: Safari looks up the addresses of links on webpages and can load those pages faster.

Improved Page Caching: Safari can add additional types of webpages to the cache so they load quickly.

XSS Auditor: Safari can filter potentially malicious scripts used in cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

Improved JavaScript Support: Safari allows web applications that use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) to run faster and more securely.

Hang on a minute.

I have never said that all things Apple are great.

I Posted this so that people who use Safari (which is available on both OS X & Windows) are aware that their is an update for Safari.

Just because i happen to like some Apple products doesn't mean that i think everything they do is great.

You have your reasons for not liking them. But that doesn't mean you have to throw abuse at me every time i post something about an Apple product :'( :'(

Oh and i am not on Commission. I wish i was though as i would happily post up all sorts of stuff about Apple products just to annoy you :giggle: :p

Apple update tells everyone this, and right now it just feels like a walking commentary on all things apple.

Best quote I heard on TV from a tech journalist about apple products.

Bought by people blinded by design.

Afraid it does if you have iTunes. It tells you you need Safari (to be fulfilled and keep Steve happy*) when you get an iTunes update.

*I made this bit up.

You don't need iTunes. Install any Apple software on Windows, and by default it installs the Apple Software updater that checks for updates and tries to get you to install the rest of Apples product range... Of course, if you remove the software updater then you won't get the notification

You've both got a point; Carl does post a huge amount of 'Apple' stuff but it's equally as tedious that Cheeze & a few others feel the need to jump on every single 'Apple' thread & slag off Apple and their customers. You don't like Apple, fair enough; don't read any iThreads! :)

Wrong, I own some apple kit (1st Gen Mac Mini and an older pie pod).

I just get a bit narked at people professing apples greatness.

When I got the mini, it was about £300 for a well speced one with the faster G4 CPU and extra RAM.

Now it starts at £515 for the base model, up to £663 for the eqivalent to the one I paid around £300 for without the RAM upgrade.

Apple have put their prices up, dictate what you can do, try and sue people left right and centre, talk so much *******s it's not even funny.

Pie Phone is a perfect example.

The 3G is what the phone should have been all along, with 3G.

The 3GS is what the 3G should have been (eg a decent CPU)

Future versions might fix the awful battery life, but you know there is nothing killer that even a basic nokia/SE/whoever smart phone doesn't do. Video calling WoW!!!

Safari.

It is based on the open source KHTML engine (As per the GNU/linux KDE browser).

It isn't going to change your life.

It isn't the only true HTML5 ad (See the comments from the Moz guys about this subject)

Apple are also seemingly professing open standards, while pushing their own agenda and not really sticking to them in all cases.

So you'll have to excuse me if a few of us, get fed up with this *******s and feel the need to counter the apple are wonderful adverts posts.

I guess at this point St Steve has just lined some kittens up against a wall and take out an automatic weapon on spray and pray mode.

See cheeze

It was useful to some :p

Also just like to point out that software update didn't alert me either. I was doing a manual check as I do once a week.

+1 for appreciating the apple posts in the tech forum. Cheers Carl

I don't go on as many techy forums these days as I used to due to lack of time and generally miss update notifications. So if anyone can post useful information (such as software update notifications) or reviews on products I don't own, I'm happy to read (whether apple or any other manufacturer).

The tech forum here is full of diverse topics - it's certainly not apple-biased so I don't see the issue here.
