Automatic boot - Completed

do the hatchbacks share the same strut? As part number from mine comes back as a estate.

Could you only replace the one strut.maybe leaving a lazy one in there will slow it down. Then again it's load when shut is the problem.

Just thinking aloud here...

Just had a look at etka for FL MK2's and it suggested 1Z9827550 for all estates, for hatchbacks it's more interesting:

- 1Z5827550 (PR 8M0, 2JB)

- 1Z5827550B (PR 8M1, 2JB or PR 8M0, 2JD)

- 1Z5827550C (PR 8M0, 2JK)

- 1Z5827550D (PR 8M1, 2JD)

- 1Z5827550E (for vRS)

8M0 - no rear wiper/washer

8M1 - with rear wiper/washer

2JB - standard bumpers

2JD/2JK - sports bumpers

I suspect something is lost in translation for the standard/sports bumpers part as it may refer to the small spoiler that non vRS versions can be fitted with.

The hatch vRS already has the strongest strut as it's has the most work to do given the spoiler and wiper. The estate version is unlikely to be strong enough.

You're obviously determined to do this at great expense (and I suspect great failure) regardless of what I say so I won't be responding to hatchback questions anymore despite having looked into this extensively.

Come back to us when you've cracked it.  :giggle:

See your thinking is all wrong......

In the electrics module, there's an option for electric tailgate, like on a Superb. You could have a crack at that. No-one's done that before as far as I know.

  • 1 year later...

Hey, slight thread revival here I know...!

This was obviously a popular mod some years ago and I'm hoping to do something similar to my 2007 PRE-FL Octavia vRS Hatch. Unfortunately the struts on my boot have completely failed and actually resulted in the boot falling on my wife's back when getting the shopping out (resulting in me being in the doghouse...) so really keen to get this sorted ASAP.

How are people getting on some two years later?

It would appear the Laguna struts that Radders purchased are still available here:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F141615081845

Are these just a simple straight swap??

I'm assuming these will then be coupled with the red springs which have been mentioned earlier in this topic? I'm a tad concerned regarding safety as  mentioned by some others as we have the dog in the boot sometimes and obviously don't want the tailgate to fly open on the motorway...

I'm considering just buying the Laguna new struts and possibly not bothering with the red springs for now as this will obviously remedy my current heavy boot situation and possibly still pop it open more so than OEM struts (I believe 1Z5827550E is the specific item number for the vRS??) but really do find the completely auto opening boot pretty cool :)

Thoughts? Cheers

I can tell you my experience....I, too read this thread with great interest. I did purchase a set of red springs to fit onto each tailgate strut. Fitting was dead easy  - I just removed the top anchor of the strut by holding the end just below the fixing with a pair of decent mole grips and the unscrewing the fixing and popping the new spring on the shaft and then replacing back the end fitment.

Some two years later I still have the springs fitted but their action did change (quite quickly) from healthily springing the boot lid open by about 12" to just opening the boot lid by a couple of inches which crucially is all one needs - so that it doesn't drop back onto the catch and lock itself up again. I would point out that the tailgate was never dropping down onto my head once it was open.

Although, I suppose it would have been better to replace both struts for new ones for just a couple of bob I have had an opening bootlid that never fails to open.

I hope my post helps

Hi Tom!

Thanks for the detailed and quick response. That is great to hear a positive experience after that amount of time.

I think there is no doubt that my struts are gone, it rarely stays up on its own and as stated easily falls whilst open often causing some bruising...!

I'm just unsure of what struts to buy, the 'Laguna' ones or Skoda aftermarket ones from someone like SGS. Seems that Radders had some success with Laguna + red springs to get the weight of the vRS hatch all the way up (at least for a good few months anyway!)

Think I might try that, goodness knows how someone has realised the Laguna struts specifically mentioned are a perfect fit for the Octavia vRS Hatch Mk2??!

Thanks again buddy :)

Mine was still working perfectly when I sold the car. I now have the same setup on my seat leon estate!

Hi mate, that's great to hear :)

Can I confirm, is this listing the same struts you bought several years ago do you think:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F141615081845

Looks the same?! Just wondering whether to get those or something like this:

Yeah the top link are the ones I used.

Brilliant that's good to know thank you. I think I'll purchase just those for now, get them fitted and see how much the boot will lift on its own without the springs and if I'm happy leave it so but more than likely I'll want it opening all the way so the red springs will follow shortly after...! That's assuming the red springs aren't a requirement that are essential to work with the Laguna struts? The Latvian eBay seller is quite adamant you buy the correct ones so thinking I won't have much comeback saying I've bought them for a Skoda! Cheers :)

Judging alternative dampers to fit is quite easy, I think I linked it earlier in the thread: the dampers are going to be a certain length and diameter so all you do is get matching specs and look for ones which are marginally more powereful than the SKoda originals.

Radders, without trawling, am I right in thinking your car you had them on definitely was an estate, not a hatch??

You will need the red springs to get it started then the struts take over. The springs do soften / shorten a little over time, I have just added a couple of washers and its good as new again.

Radders thanks for replies mate.

I just wanted to clarify, can I use just the Laguna struts on their own to see if I'm happy with the lift they provide? Or are the red springs a neccesity with the struts?

I'm keen to see if just the Laguna struts on their own will lift the boot a couple of inches and then minimal effort pushing up and pulling down closed as I'm still a tad unsure if I want the completely 'auto open' boot...!

Cheers

You can always add the red springs at a later date if you don't get the desired effect with the laguna struts so if you are on the fence I would just buy the struts first and see if that achieves your aim, if not add the springs.

Radders that's just the answer I was looking for thanks buddy :)

My only issue now is that the struts linked from eBay (Latvia) have an estimated dispatch date of early April...!!

I'm going off the OEM number listed which is 844300004R. An eBay search throws up some UK listings but unsure if that'll definitely be the right one?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F111875938710

There are similar listed items for circa £20. Why can't it just be easy?!

Apologies I’m reviving this again, but hey it’s an interesting topic!

I never got round to buying new struts, but certainly need them now!!

Looking through the various posts, I can see two part numbers have been provided for the Laguna struts that can be fitted to the Mk2 Octavia Hatchback. Being:

844300004R

For which I’ve found this:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F171998733767

&

844304692R

For which I’ve found this:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F142536601702

So...which ones to go for? Or neither?! I’m not planning on getting the springs initially, just want to see what the struts are like. The other main attraction is that I can’t seem to find the Octy vRS Hatch struts (1Z5827550E) for much less than £35 so these ones at £18 are a lot more appealing!

Cheers,

Woody

I cannot answer your question but I should point out that I have just purchased these on EBay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fit-Skoda-Octavia-Estate-2004-2013-Rear-Boot-Tailgate-Gas-Spring-Struts-Pair/153291031289?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

At the price I would think you cannot go wrong........I would just remind everyone looking at the link that my car is a 1Z5 Estate just in case the saloon struts need to be different.

I hope this helps

I have only just come across this topic, its of interest to me to avoid getting my hands dirty while operating the handle/switch to open the tailgate which is always covered in muck on my Estate, closing not so much a problem as I can pull it down fast using the interior dogbone handle.

However till reading this I did not know that a long push on the keyfob would open the tailgate so thats a result!

Nonetheless I want to play with the full auto opening, I have new struts from last year and they were as cheap as the ones linked to, I have just found that you can get the die springs cheap on E-bay, I used to be a press tool designer so know that the ones available were overpriced, here you have 5 for less than £8 delivered, you will need spares because they are being compressed beyond their design limits and will decrease in free length.

Hi Tom, thanks for the advice and link. Yes mine is a hatch and that seller you linked to only lists struts for the estate. However, it has spurred me on to look at eBay and I’ve found these:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F311527141096

They might do the trick...?!
