Camber Adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just wondered if there was any other way to adjust the Fabia's camber other than the side to side motion on the subframe?

Do any of the coilover brands have a set up to adjust it on the strut?

Slot the lower wishbone holes inwards to rduce camber

You can also slot the top mount holes outwards to reduce camber.

If your feeling really flush you can buy adjustable top mounts for around £300

You need cam bolts for the strut mountings (if available) or, as noted, adjustable top mounts. Note that reducing negative camber on a slammed car will push the tyres towards the arch tops.

Cheers guys, perfect answers :)

I keep trying to get the message through that eccentric bolts with only work on the 6N Polo and 6K Ibiza, these current(ish) small car platforms use an entirely different method of fixng the struts to the hub assemble so there is no scope for adjustment at that point.

Just what i was thinking ... There is absolutely nowhere to put the camber bolts due to the strut legs dropping into the hub assembly & then clamped... They are not bolted directly to the hub like most traditional shockers .......

I did wonder if that was you buddy!

So just to confirm, there is no eccentric bolt and washer adjusment?

Correct ...

With this camber change will put CV drive-shaft joint angle, off centre, possible excessive wear could take place??

Can you expand on what you mean by slot the wishbone holes inward? Or slot top mount hole outward... bit lost and Kiwk Fit have denied adjusting camber is possible.... mines is WAY off

There are three holes in the outer end of the lower wishbone.
If you elongate those holes towards the car by a few mm - then push the hub towards the car as you tighten the bolts back up it will remove negative camber.

Hi mate. Thanks very much. Can it make a pretty decent adjustment? On the Hunter left shows -0.30 as expected. However right shows -1.20. You think that would be sortable with your method?

I take it to adjust the top mount you would need to start drilling bodywork holes?

That usually just means that the right hand spring has taken a more of a set so the car sits slightly lower on that side, it really isn't worth worrying about, most cars are like it because most cars run about with just a driver sat in them their whole lives.

Could that knock camber out that much? Was reading a guide for the Fabia that says anything over 0.30 of a difference is too much. But you could be right.

i was getting it done in the first place as I've mostly renewed all the ball joints, bushes, drops, brake callipers, wheel bearings, hub carriers. Everything except the struts, strut tops and springs really, wheels all balanced today as well but it still has a wobble and feels like it's all over the road. Worse  after having tracking done than before. And the only thing that's more out than before is the camber from -1.05 to -1.20.

Anyone else think it's worth new strut mounts?

If you are really hell bent on sorting that camber difference out a bit, then what is left is to move the subframe a bit to equalise the camber settings across the car maybe  along with trying to make use of any  "clearance" in fixing bolt holes on the consoles and lower swivels.

That clearance (why the quote marks?) in the console mounting holes is how the subframe is moved, it doesn't attach to anything except the consoles.

my ibiza tdi had unequal camber. It was previously in some sort of crash and CAT D. I also kerbed it at 30 odd mph on an 'invisible' traffic island...

When changing the ARB i took the opportunity to realign the subframe. It really helped with the handling and i got both sides equal again.

Hopefully it will be visibly better and you will feel the difference in the handling. Get it aligned once you've got all the parts you want to change done

Take some reference points and measure carefully to match both sides. Make sure you use new bolts as they are stretch bolts. Make sure you torque them to the right spec. Drive it around then you may want to check them again to make sure they are still tight

I think that a few people would see that I used quotation markings to avoid saying that these holes are adjustment holes, as everyone knows that you can't adjust the alignment - it seems.

Many people believe that the alignment can't be adjusted because they aren't aware of these large clearances or their purpose.

For the same reason people unknowingly mess up the alignment, not realising how much play there is in these holes.

Thanks for the info guys. Gave KwikFit a call, they said they'll be happy to adjust on the hunter if I show them how it can be done.

You guys think it's worth changing the top mounts?

13yo CAT C Fabia Estate 165k Miles... I reckon they'll have never been done.. It's not a well looked after car. Slowly nursing it back to health since I bought it lol.

If I were you I would take it to someone who says they do know how to do it.

YEP....

try this web site for independent alignment centres...has a good reputation...

Motorsports mechanics know what they're doing, the difficulty is getting them interested in doing any work on bland standard cars.

Couldn't agree more to be honest, problem is I've actually paid them!!! I'd be lucky to see my £50 back so ill give them another chance.

Wish I had seen this site before I went, would have been ideal. thanks guys.
