New discs and pads.

Featured Replies

I am looking to replace the discs and pads all round on my MK1 Octy VRS. Its had the original discs and pads from new which have now seen 48,000 miles. I have been looking at the various options available on E-bay. The drilled and grooved discs with Green Stuff/Red Stuff pads have caught my eye.

Can any one reccommend what I sould get.

I feel the that places like GSF and Euro car parts are very expensive for what is on offer!

Cheers,

Mark.

ebay company called crn awesome compny with cheap brakes give them a buzz well worth it

Depends what your budget is and whether you want discs that look good aswell as perform well.

I found the EBC ultimax discs with red stuff pads a good combo on a previous car, and the discs are grooved and painted so shouldn't generate the unsightly rust on the parts that are not in contact with the pads for a few years.

Red stuff was a good combination for fast road use, but not racing. brake dust was reduced at least 50% on ordinary pads.

I have heard some good reports on the Brembo max discs which are also painted and grooved and quite a bit cheaper than the ultimax discs, but not sure if they do a fitment for the VRS?

If on a budget then i used the Mintex brake box on the rears recently and found they have performed very well at about 25% of what the EBC combination mentioned above would have cost.

good luck.

How much better are these than standard? Has anybody asked the bloke how much it would cost for the discs and either red or green stuff pads rather than the ones on offer?

On one set of pads?!!

Amazing

yep call them and discuss what you want you can have as many groves or horse shoes as you want etc whatever brake pads you want and they are very cheap

wouldnt bother with the green stuff pads ... reports say they are poo

ive just fitted red stuff pads and even though takes 300-400 to run them in ... first impressions are good . i fitted them with ebc ultimax discs .. very noisey to start off with but after 200 miles have gone quiet .. another 200 miles and i can properly test them

I'm quite impressed by the brembo (non-grooved) discs from gsf, and mintex brake pads from ebay. The pads were listed for an audi s3.

Pads were £20 posted, and the discs were £80 for the pair.

Compared to my old vrs with oem parts, they've made quite a difference and are a lot cheaper too!

Yeap, The first set of Conti Sport Contact tyres lasted 35,000 on the front too! I'm well impressed because I do give it some stick every now and then. To be fair the front discs are now very worn, I don't think they will pass the next MOT.

Sere Motors in N Ireland will do you genuine VAG parts at a very competitive (trade) price

don't use Greenstuff pads, they are horrible, better to stick with standard. I've not used redstuff personally, but yellowstuff are great, even for road use. We use yellowstuff on our race TT and they get proper abuse and work well, easy on disc rotors and work ok from cold.

I'm waiting for some horseshoe groove discs from CRN, I've heard good reports of their quality for the price too.

For normal road use, you can't go far wrong with the Mintex Box kits, good quality and sensible price.

Really? I'm still on the first set of pads and discs after 6 years and 95,000km

I had them checked recently and the guy reckoned they were nowhere near needing replacement!

The secret is not using the brakes :D

I have to agree, I had over 50k on my last set of OEM 312mm disc's & Pads and I bought them off a briskoda member with approx 15k ontop of that.

Having heard good reports about Tarox Strada pads it could be worth checking out them mated to some Zero Sixty discs

Without a doubt go for grooved discs and redstuff pads. awesome!! bout 130 quid from ebay if i remember right. like has already been said, noisy for a few hundred miles but soon quiet down. brilliant stopping power

Redstuff are good, but they are not easy on the disks IMHO.

As for the grooved discs, they just eat the pads faster, so save your money.

I have to be honest and say I've gone back to OEM, purely on costs at the moment, and will be able to compare back to back soon.

Mine has 122k miles , just went straight through MOT , but i will be doing Rears in a few months before winter .

If you are going to get aftermarket discs then the only people who list vented disks for the rear are EBC, everyone else has solid disks listed. To get around this you need to get disks for a hot bora or hot passat diesel which are listed as vented. Came across this issue earlier in the year when having my rear disks replaced.

I use standard disks, mintex 1144 pads all round with dot 5.1 fluid and braided hoses. Once bedded in the brakes are amazing (friend nearly head butted the screen when they were new and I was still getting used to the improved braking).

For disks don't get drilled disks if they are vented, which they are on a vRS. The inside face can not be deburred from the drilled holes and this makes the disks crack. This if not found (and getting new disks fitted) can lead to the disk detaching from the hub leaving you with no brakes at all. It does not matter what make of disk it is all drilled vented disks do this (grooved or not).
