Carbon Dashboard retrim

Featured Replies

I am doing carbon dashboard and doors re trim (just silver molding drives me mad). Can anyone help with tips how to remove this plastic stripe from doors and dashboard? Maybe with photos ?

I did already two plastic parts from left and from right of steering wheel , but have difficulties with removing doors strips and passenger side top of the gloves box strip.

I believe the dash ones are easy to remove with a trim removal tool, however the ones on the door are I believe part of the door card and cannot be removed without destroying the card.

20% done ! :)

The big molding on top of the gloves box , joined with dashboard with 3 screws , access to this screws available only from inside of the dashboard. So , I took away gloves box (lost 2 V type metal clips on the plastic door at the left side of the dashboard) and got an access to the screws. Star type nut with different holders required. Then took away molding, wrap it with 3M film and assembled everything back. So , only the doors and radio trim left.

Pull the radio trim from the bottom under the buttons below the air con, it you are careful, no tools are needed for that.

Never tried to get the door trims off

Take away radio trim is not a problem at all , I did this before, but trim process is a bit complicated.

I will try to take away rear door panel completely , and then I will now is it possible to take molding alone.

Impressive

Good luck with the door trims

Ive been thinking of doing this aswell.

Looks good. Nice work.

Not my taste but must say I am impressed with how you have applied the film. Looks like a very good job so far, must have taken you some time to get the film to fit just right.

That 3M vinyl is excellent stuff, very easy to manipulate with swmbo's hairdryer..... :giggle: I'm on the verge of getting a Seat Leon Cupra and I plan to either matt black spray or carbon wrap the chrome grille surround.

looks very fake carbon to me, way to perfect. very well done tho just not my cup of tea on that type of car

Original silver molding is completely crap. Basically in real life this "carbon" film looks like much more darker with no bright stripes (bright stripes appears because of the photo flash).

And I did compare this black mate 3M film with actual non polished true carbon , and it is looks very similar. I do agree that probably original carbon parts will be better , but unfortunately there are no option in skoda catalog for me.

A single coat of clear lacquer seems to make Di-Noc look a lot better. More like it has a proper gel coat, like you'd find on the real deal.

I actually do not like glossy coat on carbon. It is necessary for UV protection on "real" carbon.

Back again ;-)

Do anybody have more less precise manual how to gently took away the doors panel ?

I have manual for Golf V, VI , and Jeta IV , but all of this panels are not exactly like on A5. I know general Idea ( 4 screws under the door holder and the move up and away ) but I am still warring about braking or loosing something.

Get yourself some spare plastic clips.

Original silver molding is completely crap.

I dunno, I like to think it's honest. It is what it is. It's not pretending to be carbon fibre or wood.

How do you take out the glovebox please?

Guys, my job involves vehicle search as a result we work closely with Thatcham who provide us with all the lastest methods for trim removal etc, let me have a look tomorrow and see if I can come up with a simplified 'how to guide' for the removal of the door card and glove box.

Removing of the Glovebox is very simple operation.

1) Take gently left side cover off (mirror to the fusebox cover), but very gently , I lost 2 from 3 V type metal fixer :)

2) Unscrew one torx under this cover (close to edge)

3) Unscrew 2 torx under the glovebox

4) Unscrew 3 torx in glove box , and job done.

The door card has a series of screws as well as plastic retaining plugs.

From memory there are:

1 within grab handle ( not the handle to open the door )

2 on edge closest to the front wing

2 on bottom edge.

You need to remove the cover over the wing mirror part of the door and once all the screws are out you lift the door card up and off. Just remember to disconnect the electric windows (if you have them) as iirc the wiring is held against the door card in parts. Also remove and disconnect the lower open door warning lights and the tweeters before taking the door card off.

Not had mine of for a while but it's exactly the same on a Golf which i also did on the wife's when she lost her wing mirror in a fight with a wheelie bin.

It will be easier with 2 of you to get it off and disconnect wires. You will need a trim tool to get the covers off the screws.

Will have a look tomorrow if I get chance and take some pics. Pretty sure the door trims are then held in by 3 screws on the rear side but as I haven't done this for a while I could be wrong.

1 within grab handle ( not the handle to open the door )

Found 4 torx screws inside of the door handle ( no the driver door , but in 3 others)

2 on edge closest to the front wing

2 on bottom edge.

Not even a sign of this extra screws. This is my biggest worrying , because I can see this screws in Golf V manual.

I'll have a look at mine tomorrow but im sure it was the same process as the Golf.
