Front and Rear Optical Parking Sensors OPS retrofit

Featured Replies

Thanks for answering.

There aren't rear sensors either. It seems a bit frightening to do the installation, as I have never really done things like that before. But I have the workshop manuals, and it doesn't look terribly difficult either.

Now I have a Swing radio/CD in the car, but thinking about upgrading to a Columbus with DAB+. I suppose that the buzzer will work even if I just have the Swing unit?

  • Here is a wiring diagram I have drawn, apologies, it is a bit rough and ready as it's only for my own use. I will do a full write up when it's complete. Big Nick, to add the fronts to your existing O

  • I've retro-fitted F&R sensors from a FL Octavia to my pre-FL Octavia and have OPS & PDC; so yes it is.   If you already have rear sensors then it involves some wire swapping.

  • Forgot to add, I'd like to thank Badger Driver for his help with the switch wiring! Slightly confused with the switch needing two grounds!

Yes. Buzzer will work regardless of the headunit.

There are two if you have front & rear sensors.

If you car is from early 2007 or earlier you'll almost certainly need an updated CAN gateway module as well to stop battery drain. (I know yours is a 2010, but I thought I'd add that reminder in for owners of older cars)

The good news is that you'll also benefit from OPS with that & a Columbus.

I'd look for a complete kit for a FL-Octavia and fit that. The only really tricky but is tapping into the CAN twisted pair wires near the CAN gateway.

Trim comes out fairly easily as do the bumpers. It all takes time, but is fairly straight forward.

Feel free to ask for advice or search for threads where others (myself included) have done it.

CarSystems.eu or CarsEquipment or Skodateile.cz are good sites for retrofit kits.

How easy is it to retrofit front sensors? Are the holes already marked out on the inside?

Thanks again for your thorough answer.

I think I'll have to give it a try... just have to decide whether to buy the rear- or both front and rear kit.

For relatively little extra effort, I'd do front & rear.

The only extra is running some cables into the engine bay, removing front bumper & drilling four more holes (which are marked).

The pre-FL sensors use brackets and 21mm holes (IIRC). The FL sensors are flush mount and use 18mm holes and are much nearer in my opinion.

I have a 2012 FL with rear sensors fitted from standard. Am i right in thinking this is what i need to complete front installation  as well

It does look fairly straight forward however when you refer to the can gateway at the front on the facelift is this connected to anything or is the plug just loose for making connection. I take it the high/low leads plug in via a small spade terminal do they?

Connection:

2X brown = GND: earthing points by rear wheel arch and gear stick. Bolts / nuts already in place

1X black = GND: see above (IIRC)

1X purple = +12V supply: to fuseboard using appropriate switched live connection. Piggyback existing or new.

1X shadow = +12V (illumintion of button): tap into existing wire from ESP or other button

1X white with black strip = CAN high (directly to CAN gateway): solder or scotch lock into existing wires as close to CAN gateway as possible

1X white with brown strip = CAN low (directly to can gateway): see above.

You won't need to change CAN gateway on your car but will need to add new buzzer on top of steering column and run more wires from new controller in boot to the front if vehicle and into engine bay (rubber grommet with nipples up behind glovebox).

The CAN gateway is easiest to access by removing the wiper scuttle panel, arm & linkage. There's a specific rubber panel for this.

KBphoto, thanks for that. I may well give this a go. I will look  forward to the how to guide when ollybroad is all done with his install..

Hi

I'm near you and have added front sensors to my Vrs then upgraded to PLA 1.5 then PLA 2

I can also help source some parts for less

Eddie that sounds good. What sort of price? You must be the chap that Darren at Simpson had mentioned.

I will find out a price

look at my car in the members ride you can see what i have added

I had a look and very impressed. I must admit i miss my maxi dot and the mfsw from my Fabia vrs but not the amount of oil it used. Its still sitting on Simpsons forecourt after 6 months. Loving the Octavia though far better car. I will be more than happy with front sensors fitted if i can manage that. I do love the heated seats as well that you've fitted..

Try this guide for starters (sorry its in Spanish)

From looking at the photos the bumper is pre - marked for the sensors. So need to buy front sensors, beeper, ops module and p buttob

That's about the size of it.

If you are going for the newer optical module, as your car is a preFL with rear sensors already, the old module will be wired differently in respect of the rear sensors compared to the requirements of the newer module. See hell666s thread here:

Further to get OPS working you need to change the connection to the CAN gateway. See here:

Hi, I have bought the kit the same as in the link.

Which side of the car does the wiring go down.

Should be down the left as there is a buzzer in the lower B-pillar to connect to.

Left as your sat in the drivers seat or left as you're stood in front of the vehicle.

Its the left as sat in the car.

ok cool. One further question, which side of the bumper (left or right as stood at the front looking at the windscreen) does the the loom connect to the bumper. Looking at the other photo's I've seen it is on the left hand side near the washer bottle.

I also believe that is the case. Kb will confirm though, he has actually done the sensors fit (I have only fitted OPS).

From the passenger side rear wheel arch (RHD / UK car) where the controller is, run the cables along that side.

Buzzer at base of passenger side B-pillar. Some of the cables need to run inside behind the dash panels to the steering column for the other buzzer and to join into the CAN wires as close to the gateway as you can (Orange/ brown and orange/black IIRC).

Sensor cables go from the interior into engine bay behind the glove box on the passenger side (RHD vehicle) and emerge behind the battery.

Cables then run across the engine bay near the scuttle panel to the washer bottle where the connector is located as there is a mounting point for it on the bottle.

Front sensors are all connected in a line from driver's side to passenger side (at least my kit was).

As you look at the front of the car facing towards the back of the vehicle the cables emerge from the interior on your right, travel across the back of the engine bay, forwards / towards you on your left by the washer bottle filler and the along the front bumper from your left to right.

Hope that cleared it up.

Yes many thanks. It is going to be my little project when I am off at easter along with foot well lights and rear reversing camera.

Good plan to do lots in one go. It's removing the trim that takes the time up.

I'm hoping to add front sensors, towbar and roof mounted GPS antenna soon. There's not much overlap in the trim that needs to be removed where those cables need to go though...
