vRS newbie question

Hi all.... first post here :thumbup:

Been looking around at getting myself a new car and keep ending up looking at a new Skoda Octavia vRS. I have always been a Vauxhall fan up to now but this new Skoda really does fit the bill nicely.

There's 2 people by me with Ocatavias and the in-laws have not long purchased an Octavia to. All seem to be really happy with them.

I am looking at the vRS model but have a few questions:-

1). Is there anything I should be worried about ? ? I know all cars have there issues but is there anything I should bear in mind ?

2). I was looking at the Diesel engine originally but seen loads of posts about the DPF. I usually do about 9 miles each way to work on A roads or 2 miles each way depending which office I work in. I don't do a lot of motorway miles/long journeys so I'm worried that this driving will not be good for the DPF. Any advice ?

3). Can the mudflaps be fitted to the vRS ? ? Just thought the bigger wheels flipping stones etc up not good for the paintwork.

4). Really do like the Race Blue paint but was a bit worried about stoine chips/scratches etc. showing up in it. Anybody any advice on this colour ?

Don't know if you are referring to a new car or a used car.

Diesel really doesn't sound appropriate for your use - the engine will hardly ever fully warm up. Definitely go for a petrol model.

Can't speak about the Race Blue paintwork. I have seen various members claim that Skoda paint is thin and easily chips, however my Silver vRS apprears to have very tough paintwork. Nearly two years old now and I doubt it has more than 2-3 very minor chips. I have owned BMW, Mercedes and VW in the past and the paint on my Skoda is no worse.

I would not worry too much about the DPF (I feel the issue is very over blown on here). My daily drive to work is 10 miles each way on a mix of A/B and a short stretch of motorway (about 2 miles). I had the PD 170 with DPF for nearly 4 years with no isssues with the DPF. I now have the CR VRS for about a month and a half and expect no issues with the DPF going forward. This is because the DPF/CR combination should give less problems with the DPF so if I had no issues with the PD I should have no issues with the CR. Doing the 2 mile journey to many times in a row may cause an issue (but would need to be weeks of that drive to cause an issue) but the 9 miles should be fine.

My pd VRS was race blue and had very few stone chips after 4 years of driving and they did not show either (my wifes Toyota Verso has more chips and more obvious and that is only 2 years old). My new VRS is also race blue and I expect no issues with the paint again.

Due to the different bumpers on the VRS the rear mud guards do not fit (although they can be made to fit with some hot water). I believe the front ones fit with no issues. Again I never had mudflaps on my old pd VRS and it did not seem to suffer much for not having them.

If you like your petrol cars go for a petrol VRS or the 1.8TSI, both quicker than the diesel VRS, much cheaper and have more zing. Skoda finish is typical VW ie best on the market.

Seats are good on the VRS, not so good on many other models. Insurance reasonable. I found Bamfords OK but most Skoda dealer I have found to be good to very good.

Having had real problems with my DPF, I would definitely steer well clear. I was told by Skoda that as this is not a warranty item, I have a choice now of regenerating it every few days in 3rd gear down the motorway, to the point it wont regen, then I have to buy a new one... Yeah OK. I sold mine over the weekend and bought a petrol BMW instead!

My journey was about 6 miles a day and even though I did get a good motor way run every other weekend, it was the short stop-start ride to work that was killing it.

Buy one now is my advice, you won’t be disappointed. The standard items in the VRS are pretty impressive now with a couple of extra's you’ll be complete - reverse sensors, spare wheel and possibly Maxidot (although I didn’t bother with the maxidot, a lot of people on the site rate it as a good way of altering the cars electrical options).

From the sound of your driving pattern I think you'd be better off with the petrol vRS to be honest... If i was doing less miles, the that's what I'd have gone for...

I have once noticeable chip on my car which isn't too bad for 15500 miles or so, seeing as the gravel that caused that chip was enough to chip the windscreen too... (Lorry dumped a load of gravel as I was overtaking it...). The paint seems to be harder wearing than my previous Saab was which was littered with stone chips when it went back to the fleet manager...

I don't have mudflaps on mine and have no issues so far with the paintwork in that respect

I'm 7 months into my first Skoda ownership I'm still chuffed with my choice of the diesel vRS. Now, I just need to change jobs so I'm not doing 30000 miles a year and can have the petrol one :yes:

Have owned a diesel and petrol, I definitely recommend the petrol - especially for your driving pattern :thumbup:

I'd only consider the diesel now if I was having to do big mileage, .......the petrol is more nimble, quieter, faster and responds better to remapping ;)

go for it....and i would also go for the petrol version! i have an 06 plate in blue and the paint doesn't chip any worse than my previous cars!

lots of goodies as standard on the vrs and decent mpg...depending how hard you drive it! :smirk:

i can get all the family and all the junk that comes with them into the huge boot with ease...you won't find a better car for the money!

Awaiting delivery on new Petrol 2.0 vRS Blue, but did have a few questions similiar to above. The info posted has been very useful thanks (although too late now anyhow as ....it should be on the way)!..

Go for the new 2.0TSi (petrol) engine. It's a superb engine and it'll suit your driving style better than the diesel engine.

Mudflaps can be made to fit the rear of the vRS if you heat them up a bit, although officially they don't fit.

The paint finish is rather good on all VW Group cars so I wouldn't worry about the quality of the finish too much, just go for a colour that you like.

I love Candy White and Antracite Grey vRS's at the moment!

Are you looking for a Hatch or an Estate?

The leather interior option is a nice upgrade as are the xenon headlamps if you drive on windy a-roads as they have the AFS technolodgy.

If I did get the petrol model, what sort of consumption would I expect ? ? I know a lot depends on driving style, roads, etc. etc. Would I be silly expecting about 35mpg ish from doing a steady 50-60mph ish on an A road ? ?

Fuel consumption doesn't really bother me too much as I don't do many miles and I'd far rather have a nice car and a bit of power for the sake of a few gallons of petrol !

I agree with all the others - go for the petrol. I bought the diesel because I do about 25k miles per year, mostly on the motorways. Drive with a bit of sense in the petrol and you'll get mid 30s mpg (mid 40s with the diesel over a decent stretch), but if you're buying a car like the vRS then, as you say, fuel consumption isn't the main concern - if it was you'd be buying the 1.4!!

Mine's race blue and the paint is no better or worse than on any other car I've owned (Fords, Vauxhalls, Nissans and an Audi) - go for it! They're brilliant value, and brilliant cars.

bear in mind that ideally they should run on 98 ron petrol.....which aint cheap! they do run on normal unleaded but you can tell the difference!

Not at all. I managed just over 40mpg yesterday over a round trip of about 80 miles - 50mph in roadworks for a few miles on the M1 helped! The new TSI should be better!

The new TSi engine is better on fuel, seems to be easy to get 35mpg even if you drive if fairly fast. Getting 45mpg or above on a gentle run isn't too difficult, very boring though.

How accurate do you think the Trip comps are?

I managed to get an alleged 39.5 from my 2006 TFSI over a decent mixed run, which I thought was fantastic, given the type of engine.

Just got back from 2 weeks in France (2,000 miles). New car (petrol) had 1000 miles on clock when I set off. At cruise controlled 80mph on mway I got 38mpg. I did a couple of long runs on empty B roads with no traffic, a few villages and loads of straights. Set cruise @ limit of 90kph - got 42mpg. Up Alpine passes.......low twenties at most (enjoying it though!) but balanced out to around 33mpg having run down the other side! Overall for whole trip I got just over 36mpg. No prob with 95RON. Did do a couple of fills with 98RON - noticed no difference.

I find the car is excelllent at all of the above types of driving. Impressed by the 6th gear cruise, which still has plenty of ability to accelerate past traffic on mway at speed when needed. No sign of any chips in paint at all yet.

I don't find tyre (Dunlops) or wind noise at speed mentioned in other posts intrusive - depends what you're used to I suppose. But water in the boot when lifting the hatch is annoying! Only minor niggle in otherwise brilliant car offering superb value for money.
