I thought the problem with tyres 'stepping' would be sorted on FL vRS

Featured Replies

...but no. Having had to have the geometry sorted out on the rear wheels of my last pre-facelift Octavia vRS twice, I thought that this would be sorted out in the FL version. But now I need to get it done again! Is there a way to stop this from happening or do I just have to put up with having to pay for this to be done every 15-20k miles or so?

Unladen, it's running on the standard 18's with 'normal' pressure (couldn't tell you exactly what, never needed to pump them up....

I seem to remember lots of posts on here about this problem, but thought that would be one of the things addressed in the FL version. Obviously not.

You've never checked the pressure?

Could be incorrect inflation causing it.

Causing the actual geometry to go out of line?

The last two times the geometry was way out and this was causing the stepping on the inside of the tyres - the reason this has come about on my FL one is that it went in for its' first service today and it came back with recommendation that it goes in for full geometry check due to uneven tyre wear on the rear. Seems a bit familiar....

To be fair, I've done 20k miles on the same set of tyres which is pretty good so can't complain too much, but I don't want to have to pay for full geometry check every time I need to change tyres...

Then should be a warranty thing.

Do you bump up on curbs often? Go over many of those speed humps that only partly cover each lane?

My 2nd set of tyres are saw toothing quite quickly on the rear. My original set didnt do it at all. I think I'll get the rear geometry checked.

Ive done several searches but despite finding many threads on the subject I cant find any actual figures being quoted.

I believe Skoda released new geometry settings for the rear around 2008 because of the saw tooth issue, but what are the recommended settings ?

Mine is a Feb 2008 TDI VRS and I dont know whether it has early or later geometry settings.

The new settings appeared around April 2007.

how do you know they are 'normal' pressure if you have never checked them!!!!!

no sign of it on my facelift yet (only done 7500 miles mind)

the contis seem a lot better then the gsd3 I had fitted on my last vrs..though it looks like fitting a new set of fronts will still be an annual job for me..damn my right foot, nut the rears seem to be wearing well and evenly

perhaps the eagles I had were just more prone to the sawtoothing

You did 20000 miles without checking the tyre pressure? I check mine most weeks and have to occasionally top up the pressure so i would recommend checking at least monthly...

On my 3rd VRS & no issues at all.

As others have said, keeping a regular check on those tyre pressures may be helpful ??

Old value: -1°45' ± 30'

New value: -1°20' ± 30'

Get this checked by the Skoda garage, as part of a warranty claim. No point them saying the geometry's been checked, if they're still comparing it with the old values...

Is this the camber or some other setting ?

Yes, rear camber values.

same with me! very annoying.. I've done 6k from new in my FL vRS ande i've noticed inside edge rear tyre wear!

the tyres feel 'lumpy' whem you run your hands over them on the inside edge!

had this with my 56 plate vRS even after a wheel alignment check at the dealers!

Never had this on my Mk1 vRS '53 plate or in fact never had un-even rear tyre wear on any car i've ever had!!

This is the interesting bit. If you had the alignment checked at the dealer previously, do you have any paperwork to go with this - i.e. what the alignment values were before, and if they made an adjustment, what it was changed to?

and another problem was that the Dealer said this couldn't be done under warranty as wheel incorrect wheel alignment could be caused by potholes and the like! :wonder:

yes, I'll have to dig out that paperwork..They did say it was out and needed correcting but from what to what I didnt know!

Friend had a Seat Altea and Seat's cure was to fit Continental Sport Copntact 3's as apparentlly some makes/brands are more susceptible than others. He thought it did cure the problem.

My Elegance Hatch with sports suspension is also droning away (50p tyres on the inside), I knew what the noise was as my Focus did exactly the same thing (rear suspension is very similar between Focus and Golf platform cars)....

Would be good to have that info

Whereabouts are you Staedtler? Would be interested to see if it's the same as my current droning! Likely to change suspension soon anyway, which should definitely cure it

Interesting what you say about the Focus too, as VAG effectively 'borrowed' the rear suspension design from them, for the Mk5 platform ;)

I seem to remember reading that VAG "poached" a number of Ford chassis engineers after the Focus came out..

I'm in Northants, a little too far away from you.

I was trying not to raise the issue of VAG copying Ford's suspension design, looks like they copied a little too closely :(

It was the issue of how well the Mk1 Focus drove compared with the Mk4-based VAG cars really. Which is why I bought a Focus at that point :)

But yeah, seems they didn't get everything right! :wonder:

Had my FL vRS in for its first service today.

For the last 3 thousand miles I've had a droning noise coming from the rear of the car particularly whilst cruising at 50-60 mph. Given that I travel 30 miles each way to work every day its been getting a little annoying to say the least. Having read posts here I've assumed it was down to this "stepping" and turned the radio up! Not ideal.

My tyres are covered under the 3 year servicing deal and today the fronts were changed as they were slightly illegal :o

The rears have not been changed but in the inspection I have the following advisory for both rears - 4.5mm - Size - 225 40 18 - dunlop - inner edge badly misshapen.

Doesn't fill me with confidence to know my rears are "badly misshapen". The chap on the service desk put it down to "spirited cornering", I mentioned the geometry issues but drew a blank. Basically until the rears have worn to the point of needing changing I'm going to have put up with the noise :(

I phoned SUK for advice who referred me back to my retailer. Not sure what to do about this really. Is this just a case of put up and shut up? I have had nothing but great service from my retailer (as shown in the review section) and don't want to tarnish this by kicking up a fuss, neither do I want to appear to be bending over as it were.

What would you do in this situation?
