I may only have a 1.6 but on a long run I can get over 500 miles out of a tank - about 44 mpg

Nowt wrong with a 1.6, but I'm damned if I'm getting 500! Barely over half that in fact!

Is that to the buzzer, or until the bottom of the red on the gauge?

Maybe I'm a touch heavy with the right foot...

Rob.

Buzzer? What buzzer? Am I missing out on some excitement?

Which reminds me of the time I picked up a Ford Focus demonstrator in London to drive back to the Ford Demo Fleet at Alconbury. The fuel gauge was reading just about empty as I left the Bow area of London and I didn't pass a convenient filling station before finding myself driving up the M11 in the dark in the middle of winter. I managed to get to the filling station at Stansted without running out of fuel, but it was not a comfortable experience. :(

I'm not aware that there's any separate "reserve tank". AFAIK (nother one for you Jase) the "reserve" means the fuel left when the heart monitor goes off (well it feels like one each time I hear it anyway - sure it takes a day off my life  ). 7 litres @ 33mpg roughly = 55 miles hence my earlier comment. It's pretty accurate - give or take a mile or two. The one time I tried to push it it ran out exactly when it said it would. I just tried to ignore it.

It's my experience that gauges will usually spend some time with the needle wrapped round the stop before fuel does give out though, and the Octavia is no exception. You just need balls of steel :D

Should beep when the petrol gauge enters the red, accompanied

by a pretty yellow light on the dashboard in the shape of a

petrol pump... :D

I think that answers the last question of yours... ;)

Rob.

Denis, you'd know it if you'd ever heard it - perhaps you fill up before you ever get into the red zone. Trust me - it doesn't beep, it goes

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPP!!!! just like one of those heart monitors in the films when somebody dies .....

I normally let my tank run low. I know that when the long BEEEEEEP happens, I have about 10 litres left. I normally drive to MPG rather than MPH. I try to find the highest reading using the trip computer. On the Motorway this usually meaning keeping to 60-65 mph. Even driving at a steady 70 means a reduction of 4-5 mpg. Its basicly a light foot on the loud pedal.

The last time the Octavia was in for a service, I got nearly 7o mpg out of the Fabia SDI courstey car

I really need to drive a bit longer on a tank... who knows what else I'm missing out on? ;)

Q.

Andy - taking into account error on the speedo, that would be 55-60mph (or thereabouts),

which would explain why it's most efficient. Once coming up the M6 the flow of traffic

limited me to these speeds, and I returned 45.5mpg which I was quite pleased with! :D

So, yes, I can see how you get 500 miles out of a tank and I don't... ;)

BTW, which spec did you opt for - Classic or Ambiente?

Rob.

Rob,

I've actually got a 99T GLX. Iwaited until Skoda fitted the air-con instead of the sun roof, the vrs or 4x4 were not available at the time. It will be change time soon and I can see the fuell bill will be rising......

I'm guessing if you waited until they fitted the aircon then you use it a lot? So the fuel

economy is with it on?!

Tried driving at a steady economical pace for my motorway journeys over the past couple

of days - it's surprisingly hard! :D

Rob.

My aircon's almost invariably off. Haven't tried a whole journey with it on but I suspect it would only hit economy by 1 or 2 mpg. Still every little helps and who needs the aircon on when it's colder outside than inside?

I reckon I'll need it today - I can't stand having windows open, even a little, at 100, I mean.. er.. 70mph, naturally. Plus its been a bloody gorgeous day today and I expect the car to be roasting! :flame:

It also produces dry air though, which is very useful in this near-tropical climate that exists in Manchester! :D

Rob.

My air con is always on, I love it. With only a 1.6 engine it probably does hit my fuel economy but, for me, it definitely makes a journey more comforable. I always have coolest air possible directed through the face level vents and to the screen. The other day I got caught in a warm afternoon storm, the windscreen was so cold that the warm, moist air was condensing on the out side of the screen! I was using the wipers to clear it long after the rain had stopped!

I've just used a hire car for a couple of days, it didn't have air con and I noticed it. I now realize that for me air con is a must have, not an option. But each to his own...

Yeah, spotted the car at horners - do you know when you'll get it back?

Ah ha....mine would be the one with no wheels and front suspension bits missing :D I'm waiting for the phone call...I spoke to Gary this morning, when it was looking hopeful for this afternoon, now I'm not sure. I'll give 'till 4pm then ring again. much later than that and it takes too long to get there from home. (walk to train - train - walk to horners about 1hr 30mins!)

Might have to use my wifes car this evening!

Paul

Umm, well when I went in at 8am it was all still in one piece....

That means they had two white estates in the workshop - you'll probably get a new armrest, and I'll get new suspension - sounds like a fair deal :D

Joining us this evening?

Just got the call, the beast is ready to pick. But it's too late now, I can't get to Horners before they close!!! So you'll see me this evening, in my wife's car. I might ask if I can join you for the run...the Daewoo will look out of place in the convoy!!!

Paul

Sure..

If I could find a way of bringing both cars home I would!

(actually - Kate lives near me, want me to sort something getting it relayed up?)

Sure you can join me on the run, passenger seat always free,
