Dashboard rattle on Fabia?

Featured Replies

MY 2001 Fabia has an annoying rattle coming from the center of the dashboard, just above the air-vents. I understand this is a common fault on the earlier models, but as the car is out of warranty I dont want to go spending loads on just getting a rattle fixed!

Has anyone else had this problem, and any idea if theres a simple fix? Im sure the air-vents would remove fairly easily, so might be possible to get to the rattley fixing maybe?

Yeah, ME! ;)

I think what I'll do is work on my similar rattle this holiday time. I did it with the old Fabia and it worked a treat. In words it basically involves removing the centre air vent assembly, disconnect hazard power, olook above double vent feed and at the back there is a plastic mount, mounted to the metal of the chassis or similar. All I did was wrap some rubber (old inner tube in my case) with sellotape to make a "ball" and using a long handled flat screwdriver I wedged in between the plastic and metal, in the mount. Stopped it dead! I even found the bit of rubber when I took my wreckage to pieces.

Cheers for the info

I'll have a look when this week sometime then. The air-vents just pull out dont they? Or are they screwed in?

I think all vRS's rattle, prehaps its in the need of some good sound deadening/coushoning to make it better!

My vRS has no rattles what so ever, the gearknob used to but as the miles went on, it doesnt rattle at all now :)

Cheers for the info

Nah, they do lever out - they've got some clips on them which secures them in place, but a gentle prising with a screwdriver does the trick for me, just disconnect the wiring before pulling too hard once its out. ;) I'll get photo's a.s.a.p. :D

i frequently 'slap' my dash to get it to shut up. but i find the passenger side tweeter speaker is worse...esspecially since i blew it (pain in the ass, sound sounds weird now) with the installation of a new alpine system

Was a common problem with ealier cars like you say. The middle retaining lug on the dash was eithr broken off, missing or not fitted correctly.

Think there is a repair kit for it but it means removing the dash.

My car only started to have this at about 2 years old, and my dealer packed it with foam. Sounds similar to what Jason has done with a different material he used rubber Oo-err! (Flyingscot wonders why everything involving Jason turns into cheap jokes)

I still believe its every Briskodian on here that's sick & twisted... not me! :P

I've was told by my dealer that rubbing a good layer of candle wax over the joins and brakets works well. I've yet to pull mine apart and try.

 having a lit candle at arms length, sticking through the vent gap would be interesting... Seriously though, the bit of rubber works fine if shoved inbetween the plastic/metal firmly. :)

Mine seems to rattle from somewhere inside the dash above the glovebox. However since I don't have the OEM suspension, I can't imagine the dealer would do anything under warranty.. So I turn the music up.

Mine doesn't/didn't rattle but Ade padded it out with some silicone when he had the dash out to replace my air con sensor

Think any rattle in my car can be attributed to the junk in the glove box ;)

Chris

The rattle by the suspension could be the OEM anti roll bar... but again as you've had suspension custom fitted, they might moan that caused the ARB to break down, despite it happening on plenty of other unfettled vRS's.

:D My rattle is now gone!

I just took out the airvents and disconnected the warning light switch as recommended by devonutopia, and you can just about see a plastic guide which slots into a metal part of the dash. I packed a load of very sticky double-sided tape in, and the rattle is no more! Only took 10mins or so.

see?! :D Not just inner tube that'll do the trick!

Long live DIY car maintenance. ;)

Thankyou Briskoda community!

I recently bought a 2000 Fabia with this annoying rattle. I simply levered out the front vents with a few credit cards and then compacted some sponge into the bracket.

The rattle is defeated! :rice:

Thanks guys

Hi Im new to this forum as I have just bought a new Fabia VRS and have found Briskoda full of helpfull info. I have though one of those little rattles in the dash that seem to eminate from the glovebox area can any of the Briskoda community shed some light into what might be the cause and how I could fix it or should I trust the dealership to go hunt for it.

Take out the centre air vents. There is a 'top-hat' section steel bracket dead on centre above and behind the two heater air tubes. A plastic lip sits under the top of this bracket and rubs against it making the noise. The plastic needs forcing upwards with a wedge about 7mm thick - I used a plastic taper wedge as used by the laminate flooring guys - you can buy a pack from B&Q. Cut about a 20mm length from the thickest end and force it in with a long screw-drive - tape it onto the screw-drive or use some other method to avoid losing it in the process as access is difficult

Hope this helps

My Fabia has a rattle/creak from the piece of trim immediately behind the steering wheel (and immediately below the instrument panel).

I can remove this piece of trim and replace it (and the clips aren't broken or anything like that) but it still rattles/creaks intermittently.

I mentioned it to the dealer at its 1 year service (last week) but they couldn't find the fault/didn't do anything to fix it.

Any expert ideas about how to resolve this? There isn't anything very clear to pack with anything.

It's most likely rattling/creaking where the back of the piece of trim meets the underneath of the instrument panel; it has some felt-type stuff on the piece of trim at this point which doesn't seem to be stopping the problem (but isn't damaged or worn in any way). :(

I had/have the same problem. Its the dashboard cluster. when you remove the piece of trim you will notice 2 screws. I tightened these. Reduced the rattle but it comes back. :( Will mention it to my dealer the next time it goes in.

You might like to try my fix for the dashboard rattle. Try folding a duster and sandwiching it between the door and the dashboard side panel by closing the door on it. Make the duster just get pinched - not too thick. If this cures the rattle *** creak, buy a small rubber stick on circular foot, packs of 4 in Homebase, and stick this to the dashboard side panel, so that it just pushes the dashboard over a fraction of an inch as the door is closed. This cured the annoying creak from the centre of the dashboard behind the central heater vents, in my car.

Best of Luck

I had just got my car back after 2 days of it being at the dealers getting a new gearbox and drove to college only for an annoying creak to greet me! So, after a nice slap...nothing happened - it still creaked. But after being at college all day and returning to it, it was fine. It was a cold morning and a hot day so perhaps it could of been to do with the heat fixing it. I suppose I will only find out in the winter :o

i wedged in wall plugs worked an absolute treat! you need to be carefull useng sticky tape cause when the heaters have been on it makes the tape soft and the creak can come back as i found out.
