What's it worth?

Featured Replies

New sprog is possibly forcing the sale of my beloved VRS.

SWMBO has a 2 seater I have often maligned here which is worth the square root of FA due to her dedicated care and attention (i.e. it's falling apart and it's mostly the dirt that is holding it together).

So it looks like I'll have to punt my car and try to get two from a combined trade in of her banger and my VRS.

Any ideas as to what a realistic value for the VRS would be?

It's a 2007 (07) with 34k on the clock FSH (all two of them), pretty standard extras (18" alloys, jumbo, dual zone) plus cruise, race blue, 10 months MOT and pretty mint condition.

Needs a couple of front tyres but that's all.

The annoying advert people quoted about £8200 a little while back. The dealer was only offering about £7200 when I was settling the finance (which seems pretty crap).

I'll probably be trying to trade in both cars at the same dealer and pick up soemthing basic for her (polo, corsa, fabia) and something old and german for me (saw a high miles 525d that looked tempting).

I'd say that would be about right, as a ball-park figure.

There's a few good links here to give you a better idea: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/90995-useful-links-for-finding-out-what-your-car-is-worth/

Also, as you have access to a second car, wouldn't you consider selling the vRS privately? You should get a lot more for it than trading it in at a dealer.

I could but it is the hassle factor, worrying about test pilots, getting done over etc etc.

i sold my car a month a go. they gave me £9500 in PX, but saying that they were offering nearly £800 more than everyone else

I sold my last car privately for £9500. If you are realistic anbout price and open and honest it should sell fairly quickly. With regard to payment, take a cash deposit and then arrange to meet the buyer and go with him to draw up a bankers draft (or ask him to send the funds electronically). If you have another vehicle to rely on for a while then result. I managed it and we only have one car!

tbh £8200 for the likes of WBAC is a pretty damn good offer! They offer under book as they need to move them on. Bear in mind that I bought my 06 plate car from Skoda 4 weeks ago with 46k miles for £7.6k, all the same options as you, plus a 12 month warranty, plus a cambelt change, new tyres etc etc.

Glass's value it at:

Part-exchange Price:

Excellent condition:

£9430

Average condition:

£8410

Below average condition:

£7400

Yours would fall into the average condition due to the tyres needed

"Excellent Condition:

Ready for retail sale; mechanically perfect, paintwork unblemished for a vehicle under two years old, but may have slight stone damage on a vehicle over two years old or with high mileage. Interior should be immaculate. A full service history must be provided. All equipment fitted should be fully operational. Tyres should be new or nearly new, wheels and trims clean and undamaged. If appropriate, the MOT Certificate must be for a minimum of nine months."

Don't forget this is a trade in value, the single most important thing to consider is not what they will give you for your car(s) but the 'cost to change' - it's meaningless if they will offer you a grand over book for your car if the one they are trying to sell you is 2 grand over book price.

I got £8750 trade in for my 56 plate PD VRS with 32k miles and basically your options (plus rear parking sensors) and I got a lot of my new car. I have now seen my old car on the forecourt for over £10k.

I changed 2 cars last year..

In both cases the annoying advert people offered more than Skoda dealers did in part exchange. So if people slag off the advert people, the dealers are even worse!!

I sold both cars privately for abour £1000 more... But it took ages & I was plagued with calls from canvassers/conmen/chancers.

Thought that was just if I was actually advertising it for sale.

There are many ways to sell, but they all trade what you get for convenience.

The guides are only guides - they are often out of date and a poor reflection of current values.

I've sold many a car and the best way to value them is by comparing them to what Autotrader shows dealers and private sellers are selling at - you may think your car is worth, say, £10,000 but if there are other private sellers near you advertising at £9,000 or dealers advertising at £10,000 then you're never going to sell.

In my experience, Glass has over the past year been typically 10% too high for the 5 private sales I have bought and sold (no, I'm not a dealer, just a man who uses 2 cars, has an ex-wife to sort and hasn't yet found the perfect car).

Beware of what other cars go for, particularly on trade-in where the real price is what the dealer offers less the discount he'd give for cash.

Eg Autotrader has a 2007 43k at £8790 Dealer example so he'd sell for less than £8,500 cash with warranty and trade protection. So, finger in the air, I'd say your car is worth ££7500-£8000.

Anyway, good luck.

Exactly why £8.2k from WBAC is a good cash price   I wouldn't pay more than £8.5k for one from a dealer as there are plenty around for good money. Unfortunately over optimistic sellers stick them up for high prices making you think yours is also worth that. Problem is they don't end up selling that and you'll be trying to flog it for an awfully long time.

Having bought mine 4 weeks ago I can tell you the price varies massively. There was approx £1.5k difference between what the car I bought was being advertised for and what other dealers, independents and what people where trying to sell them for. To give you an example my car was advertised at £7.8k at a dealer and numerous people where trying to sell the same car privately for £8-9k. Just be realistic and honest and it will sell itself B)

Could just keep the VRS and buy her an older Polo?

Could just keep the VRS and buy her an older Polo?

It's a long story. She has a two seater she point blank refuses to part with. Front airbag can't be switched off so she can never put the sprog in it.

Therefore every time she wants to go out she nicks my VRS. I hate her car to the point I'm seriously considering commuting the 36 mile round trip to work on my push bike.

It's irrational I know and common sense should be to grin and bear it, but an hour and a half a day is a long time to spend in abject misery.

I was thinking of selling the VRS and picking up something for me like an older high miles German saloon for me and an older Focus for her. Then she can keep her beloved wreak in the garage till it rots away finally.

Ran the annoying car peoples valuation again (been a few months) now £6800. Think that'll rule them out.

And finding £1,000 just to get an Older Focus/Equivalent out of the 'trader isn't an option or going down the auctions with slightly less?

Don't know where you are in the country but BCA in the Central Belt and Thainstone near Aberdeen seem to have regular auctions.

Trading in your car doesn't sound like the best option if it can be avoided.

Is it really worth running 3 cars? the tax, insurance, mot & repairs on 3 cars will be a expense you dont need with a little one to support,i thinks its time to tell her that her car has to go,your keeping the vrs & she will have to have a more practical car!............good luck! lol. :D

I know things tend to be more complicated than you write on an internet forum and it's easy to sit at a computer and judge while not knowing the full story but...... seriously, she needs to get a flipping grip!

You have currently got the perfect family car- massive boot, lots of room, reliable, etc etc and your selling it so she can keep a two seater when she's about to be a mum?

Not on in my book!

One note on German saloons if thats what you end up looking at. My wifes Fabia vRS is actually a more practical family car than my 330. The boot is bigger on my car but the opening is small and the seats don't fold meaning it's hard to use and we tend to take the Fabia if we've got the pram etc with us.

If I were you I'd look at somethign like an Octavia as perfect family transport..... oh no, wait a minute.......

p.s what is ti she actually has that she can't bear to part with?

+1.

We bought our Octy because we have a young child!

Im also really inrigued to find out what this mystery 2 seater is????!! If you dont want to name it specifically can you say what it sounds like??!!

I specifically bought my Octy because we needed a bigger family car so i sold my 2-seater Smart Roadster which i loved, the provision being i could get the VRS as it was fast & cool!! In fairness we dont use it loads unless its a longer family trip somewhere else we'll use the Mk4 Astra the wife normally drives & treats like a dustbin! Im happy with this in any case as i get a nice car & can keep it clean!!

Keep the Octy as it makes sense, or worse case scenario find a dealer who'll take your VRS & give you in return a normal Octy Elegance & a Fabia of some sort for the missus for little or no cash outlay.

Am Slightly puzzeled why youre trading Down, but it appears that SWMBO is trading up.

As previousl mentioned, the Octy is ideal for a new family, loads of boot space, & Im sure SWMBO could drive it as well if needed.

Youre looking at possibly getting rid of 2 cars, 1 to replace an older car same size you have, and to get a small hatch fro SWMBOS 2 seater.

I would guess that you will still end up paying out in loan, to finance these 2 replacement vehicles, with the added risk that your downgrade is going to cost in repairs more that your current car, along with potential repair costs to SWMBO's replacement.

Surely finacialy it would be lighter on the pocket just to replace the 2 seater specially given the additional strain on the finances that a new baby will add.

Or you could just go down to 1 car, Yours ;)
