Front bumper removal to change foglights now done

Featured Replies

Hi all

Some time back I stumbled upon a thread with pictures showing how to do this job...

I have spent an hour using the excellent :dull: search engine and instead of giving me the answer

it's given me the hump so much that I am now in no frame of mind to tackle the job.

I'll end up losing my temper and breaking something if I just go out and do the job blind.

So... my sunny day to work on the car is out of the window now as I doubt I'll have the answers I need

before it's too late to calm down and get started.

I found the forge pdf thingy but to be honest that's a guide for doing a different job entirely

it says to remove the undertray completely and I'm sure this can't be necessary just to remove the bumper???

It's just not specific enough for an amateur spanner monkey like myself. Also I can't really raise the car in the spot

where I can work on it... Again ... is this necessary???

I'm afraid I will need some pictures as well.

If anyone can point me in the right direction then I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Garry

Not done it myself nor query on the topic but when I was doing the DRL lights I took the fog surrounds out (simply by pulling them out) and there seemed to have alot of room for undoing bolts/plug connected to the fog..?

On the search.. I use google to search for things inside Briskoda.. much more fruitful results.

Edit:

To search for webpages only on briskoda using google you need to type in:

" site:briskoda.net *your search words* "

without the quotations.

Thanks for the google advice JL

Day 2. Bumper still on car

I'd really like to try and get this done today

since yesterday went out of the window.

The main thing that concerns me about this job

is the pulling the sides free bit. I really don't want to overdo it and

end up breaking it resulting in...

a. an undriveable car (no bumper is illegal isn't it...)

b. the obvious £200+ bill to replace the bumper and get it sprayed up

c. a massive sulk lasting for a fortnight while my car is away at the bodyshop being fixed.:D

Also I'm concerned about accidently triggering the airbag although I suppose if I disconnect the

negative terminal of the battery this shouldn't happen?? I'd appreciate any advice on this too.

Finally, is the bumper going to be a handful for me working on my own?, Does it need two people to

remove/refit it without damage? Or should I be able to cope alone?

Especially worried about this when re-fitting the thing.....

Thanks for any other help you guys can offer.

you are only doing the fogs......... can you not remove the side grills around the fogs and get to the screws that way?

1 Side defo comes out as it has the toe eye point......... :wonder:

From what I can see they fix into place from directly above...

Everything I've read on this suggests its a bumper off job...

But only on the vRS.

On the other halfs SDI it isn't an issue and can be done in situ... Typical... :D

Pop them off and have look?

Worse case you cant get to them and you have to clip them back on? :giggle:

I had my bumper off few months back. Wasn't a problem, few nuts down the wheel arches and along the top/headlights. Didn't take too long iirc

What you doing to your fog lights Gary? leds again :giggle:

If you lay some old blankets under the bumper you can then lay it on the blankets and not scratch the paintwork.

Not LEDs this time Bernie

The car had a cracked spotlight when I bought it and in the interests of symmetry I decided to

buy a pair rather than just one... Got a pair from Jorily delivered for less than Skoda wanted for

just one :o Stealers!

They have sat in the garage for months waiting for me to get my act together and fit them.

In the meantime, to conceal the crack (and condensation) a bit I fly eyed the foglamps

which in certain light levels almost rendered them invisible. I quite liked this look and may well

have left them but the fly eyes did cause the beams to scatter quite badly so the extra

lights didn't really help much in fog TBH.

I used some dustsheets for padding and I spread a sheet under the car so I

wouldn't lose sight of the pesky plastic pins that go through the middle of the plastic fixings

in front of the undertray... This is my top tip for this job by the way, I had to rattle the

undertray about to get them to drop out after removing their outer sleeves.

For a while I thought I'd have to take the tray off too in order to retrieve them but a few lucky taps

and shakes and they dropped out by them selves... Thank fook :D

Anyway... Success!!

The pulling the sides out bit wasn't hard at all when I removed the top fixing under each wheelarch.

When you look at it it doesn't look like its one you need to remove, it looks like it's for the arch liner..

BEFORE you attempt to pull the sides out this 4th top fixing MUST be removed or you will break your bumper.

I kept all the fixings in a small glass jar whilst working to ensure nothing went walkies.

With my standard suspension :p raising the car wasn't necessary to do this task but there wouldn't be

too much room down there if it was a couple of inches lower I reckon.

Also I would recommend that you pop out the surrounds and disconnect the lights and temp sensor before

you actually remove the bumper as the wires aren't quite long enough to get the bumper down to the ground.

The temp sensor can pop out of its holder just using fingers to squeeze the 3 lugs in that hold it in place

pop it through and then just let it dangle....

I broke the plug trying to disconnect it the normal way so this advice should spare anyone else my error.

Other than that, The job was pretty straight forward really.

Since I was going to the effort of changing my fogs I though I may as well mod them too :D

(Although to be fair I did that to them soon after buying them :) )

so I coated each one with yellow lamin x and fitted a pair of Osram all season yellow bulbs to finish

the look, they have a wonderful "holographic" look to them up close when off and when on in conjunction

with the lamin X they give a bright but distinctive golden light.... Shouldn't get the scatter with the lamin x but

I'll have to wait until it's dark to be sure.

The car irs filthy so no pics till I've cleaned it but I think they look really different and I haven't seen anybody else

on here with yellow fogs so I thought what the hell... I can always peel the lamin x off again if I tire of the look.

Thanks for your help and suggestions...

Pics on the way... I'll get scrubbing tonight :D

Garry

 nice one G man!

Scrubbing tonight? do it now lazy! :giggle:

Relatively easy job for an ameteur spanner like me, first off you have to remove 3 or 4 torx screws from the front edge of each wheel arch, then under the front of the car you will see the underside of the bumper atteched to the car with 3 plastic grommets, push the centre part of the grommet out just far enough to allow you to get a blade/ paint stripper or something similar in there to pull the grommet out, do this for all 3, if you go too far and push the centre bit all the way out you will have to remove the engine undertray to retrieve them. Next you will have to pull out the bumper from the wing, controlled aggression is the key here, get your fingers into the trailing edge of the bumper just below the wing and pull it out, there is quite a bit of flexibility in the bumper so you can go for it within reason, do that for both sides. Next you have to get under the bonnet, the bumper os bolted to the front valance using 2 Torx screws, each one just inside the headlight, undo and remove these and with a bit of jiggling the bumper will come forward. You can then unbolt the sensor located next to the left side foglight and lift the bumper completely away.

I did this all by myself in about 1/2 hour though I did find it beneficial to get the car up in the air a bit, I just drove it up onto some wood planks.

blimey, thats alot of effort for some cracked fogs.. I was just hoping to squeeze the hand in and unbolt it from the holes.. :wonder: Obviously thats not going to happen, I think I may get some lamin-x then to protect it.. (any excuse really) :D

Unfortunately not that easy as because the vRS has a deeper bumper the fog lights have a bigger moulding to them so mounting bolt access is only from the top. There is no way to gain access to the mounting screws without removing the bumper as everything is fitted so there are no gaps or pieces of easily removable small trim to allow access I'm afraid. Still it is not that difficult a job really once you have taken a brave pill in order to pull the bumper away from the wing mountings.

And finally with headlights on as well.

A bit of a different look I confess , but I can un lamin x in 5 mins flat and go back to clear if I change my mind.

If nothing else the laminx should help to protect the lens.

I think it was worth the effort and welcome any questions or comments.

Thanks for the pointers along the way folks...

Garry.

Yup. Hate them. Sorry emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Mmm.. I like, but many many others dislike.. :S

Thanks for the posting the pics. Will need a good think about the yellow..

I don't mind the yellow light, but not sure about it being yellow when switched off too. Maybe some of those yellow all weather bulbs if you wanted that look.

I'm awaiting your old foglight now to fit to my car

I like mate. Quite subtle and different.

I think they will look alot better in the flesh and in lighter condition, quite dark photos. -- Photoshoot required ;)

I've had yellow lamin-x'd fogs almost since I got the thing and I love them

The headlights are also lamin-x'd (with clear) to protect them form all the motorway miles. Seems to be working as the lights are in great shpae. Shame I can't say the same about the paint. Damn gritters...

You can easily fit the film without taking the bumper off. Just pull the fog sorround off, and wrap the film round the outer of the lamp housing, using lots of hairdryer action to bond the film to the glass all the way to the egdes. The just push the surrounds back on and the excess film is hidden from view.

I dunno why u wanted to remove the bumper to lamin x them. My window tinter put my fly eyes onto my fogs with them in place and done a cracking job

I was gonna do mines yellow but decided it's too common so kept them black to match my headlights and tail lights

I do like it though :)

It's a bit retro Gary, I can remember yellow foglights in the 50's & 60' and the Frenchy cars had yellow headlamps as well. What next?

Knew they'd look good when you got them out the boot a few months back........good to have a unique tasteful mod gary, will see it in the flesh next meet mate.

He's far away now,

He had to remove the bumper due to replacing both foglights with new ones, I am having one of his old ones to replace my cracked unit
