Things Yetis do

Featured Replies

Since micro-processors were added to cars some years ago manufacturers can add 'features' at little or no cost. When new Yeti owners come across these novel features they sometimes assume their cars are faulty and consult dealers (or search this forum). Here are some of these 'features' that I have come across on my Yeti.

1. The wipers twitch. This is a variable repositioning of the wipers when you switch off to prolong blade life. They all do this.

2. The A/C comes on automatically when you point the distribution control to screen and have the fan on. I thought I had pressed the button accidentally the first few times. In fact dry air clears the screen faster, summer and winter. The inside of my windscreen mists up more easily than on previous cars so this helps.

3. Memory 2 resets at 20 hours running (on non-Maxidot cars). Even dealers get this wrong, quoting the Maxidot figure. If you have a range of 500 miles and average 50mpg (all diesel models can do this), then the memory can reset as quickly as every two refills.

4. Both mirrors move when set to R. This works well. Use the L setting to adjust the relative angle of the left mirror then R to adjust both back or forwards. This is sometimes thought to be a fault by some new owners.

Would any owners of hi-spec SE and Elegance Yetis care to add to this list? Auto lights/wipers/opening closing windows and sunroof etc.

People also don't read the manual. Most of the features are described in there :-)

E.g.,

1. See page 63

2. Can't find anything specific in the manual about that one, actually.

3. See page 21

4. See page 67.

You can also automatically open all windows while unlocking by keeping the "unlock" button on the remote held down. Handy when going back to a car that's been left in the sun on a hot day.

I find the auto-lights and auto-wipers work brilliantly. Especially good if heavy traffic comes the other way and kicks up spray on a demanding road - the wipers just kick into high speed and keep the screen clear without you having to move your hands or worry about wiper controls.

Set Instrument needle sweep on start up,dosen't do anything but looks flash!

I remember the first car I drove that did that, I think it was an Audi a few years ago.

It was a part exchange, I was driving it back from the midlands after delivering the new car and I took a photo of the speedo as it did it's sweep when it was near 160mph and sent it to my boss at the time with the text 'This goes alright!'. Made me chuckle to myself anyway.

I've no idea if it serves any real purpose but I like the way the headlights do a dance when you turn on the ignition. It certainly turns heads when you've got your lights set to auto and it does it in a covered car park.

The rear wiper does a sweep when I select reverse after being parked and the (front) wipers had been on before I stopped - at least that's what I think happens.

Can be annoying if it's completely dry at the time.

This is intentional, as a reversing visibility aid- my current Octavia Scout does the same. If the front wipers are on for a reason, it's unlikely the back screen will be dry!

how do you do this?

I'm fairly sure you have to use a VAG-COM to re-program some settings in order to get this behaviour. It's not in the standard MFD menus.

Aye,you need VCDS to program it in ,another forum member posted on this so was having a play at the weekend.

Sounds like a perfect quick thing to add to James's wish list for the 28th of November shindig at Allams!

Mine doesn't mention the 20 hours feature on the non-maxidot computer. I must have an earlier edition of the manual which is why I thought that my computer was faulty. My Yeti manual is dated 11.09. Or there is the possibility that I have gone mad.....:o

The headlight 'dance' is a test of the self levelling and dynamic cornering beam adjustment systems. Perfectly normal on Xenon headlamp equipped cars.

And thus a perfect example for this thread of a Yeti "feature" that might be seen by some as being something broken or wrong but that is in fact working exactly as it should!

This is normal for all xenon equipped vehicles, my 5 series BMW's did this. Until it stopped dancing and pointed up.........I was flashed constantly on that journey home from Deal, about 90 miles at night. They must have loved me...

I see the point but quite often at the moment we are getting a light shower - just enough for the front wipers - but by the time I start up again the water has completely dried off. The Yeti also picks up more than the average amount of muck on the back window and wiping it dry therefore makes it that bit more smeary.

Another "feature" I've noted is:

if you move the "direction lights lever" (sorry but I can't remember the correct english name) not completely to the "click/stop" position, the lever will return to the neutral middle position but the direction lights will blink for some seconds and then they will stop.

I don't know if that feature is a design target or if it's a "fault" due to imprecise manufactoring processes...

Is the same on your SM?

Many cars do this medi@wiz, it's for when you change lanes on the motorway/highway.

Usually they give you three blinks of the indicators, so you don't have to remember to turn them off.

Thanks for your answer.

Believe me once you get used to it you will never want to be without. And when you get back in a normal car you will find that when you change lanes you just flick the indicator stalk and then the indicators only flash once! Oops! On any older VAG car you can add these. They are called "comfort blinkers" and you buy a £60 electronic box that you just add to the car.

Someone from Norway wrote complaining about this, can't remember who. We have Maxidot and were able to cancel this function ourselves, but I don't think you have it, so maybe the dealer can do it for you. We did find on a trip we did when the rain was blowing towards the front of the car the rear window was fairly dry, and we got fed up with hearing it scrape across. We are happier controlling this ourselves. The writer from Norway was going to see his dealer to have it cancelled, but I don't know what the outcome was.

Our sunroof blind has a mind of it's own. I wish I could understand what parameters it uses to decide whether to close itself. During the summer it closed every night. At the moment it's not closing overnight, and back in early spring it occasionally closed overnight. I'm guessing it closes if the temperature goes about ??c, or below ??c, but just what the ?? values are is beyond me.

This setting is available in the Maxi-Dot. I can't remember the exact menu items names out of my head, but I think I remember something like lightning&convenience and then something fairly obvious involving rear wiper.

I had this in my Roomie as well, but never quite liked it, so it was one of the first things to do while checking the MaxiDot options.

Hi Tarbat,

If I can help you, Yeti closes itself in, for two possible

reasons (other than a fault somewhere of course), the first being rain (I'd say really useful expecially

for those who keep the car not in garage, ..or for distracted

ones), and the second reason is an automatic Locking function

that closes everything after 12 hours.

...for safety/antithieves I suppose.

(Pag.28, english version Manual, under :Maxidot / Confort / Rain

Closing > ON).

I personaly like very much these features, (I've it set to ON in

my Yeti), my little worries (being a technician ..on

semiconductor equipments) are about the electrical stress

applied to: battery, electrical motors and mechanical parts

every time these doors are closed under battery power alone.

That's why I tend to close sunroof/blind/glasses stil with the

engine running (battery first!)

Have a nice day!

btw right this morning my 8th yeti (in Italy) seen on the road,

and its driver has kindly replayed to my waving!

Elcano, I doubt very much if the sun roof blind closes when it rains - it wouldn't keep much rain out!! Same goes for auto-locking. No, it seems to be temperature related, but I can't find anything in the manual about this "feature".
