Tyre pressures

Featured Replies

Obviously we all check our tyre pressures regularly....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

The question is, where/when do you check them, and what with? Do you trust the garage pressure guage, used and abused by hundreds? Or one of those home units you plug into your car's 12V? Or a pocket pop-up guage?

I always carry a pocket pop up guage in the car for a quick check if a tyre looks suspect when I'm out and about. But I drive around to my parents house, park and go in for a cup of coffee and a chat and then go back out and check them with my dad's compressor and air line guage once the tyres have cooled.

I'm guilty of using the forecourt airline and guage :( even though I know they shouldn't be trusted. I've heard (but don't know how true it is?), that the pop-up pen type guages are quite, if not the most reliable/accurate.

Always check the tyre pressures when cold/ car has not been driven for a few hours.

That was the point of the question really. What's the most accurate way of checking?

This might help?

I try to check them every week.

I have a small 12v air compressor for tyres.

I bought one years ago after getting p|ssed off queueing to get at the supermarket pump only to find it was broken or wanted 20p.

Wouldn't be without one now. Especially with the TPM going off in the middle of nowhere. I can just pull over and check/top up as needed.

I check mine when the tyres are cold and I have a Double barrel Michelin Branded foot pump which I use, don't trussed the forecourt ones

I also have a pen like pressure gauge and the readings are the same

The car is also fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitor fitted but that lights up when it feels like it.... emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I've got one of those plug in compressors which I bought when my footpump fell to bits. I pump to the pressure measured by the compressor, then cross check with an electronic pressure gauge. The compressor's one of my favourite labour saving devices!

When the tyres are cold, using a BSI marked pen guage (about £5 from Halfords).

Many years ago I used to use a proper pen type gauge and used an old foot pump to inflate them. Now I use the digital one on the electric compressor (Ring RAC600). At some point I will buy another proper gauge for more accuracy.

Me too,,especially as I've got a slow puncture which is forcing me to check them every week. I'll get it fixed sooner or later.

I can highly recomend the "Ring RAC 630" 12 v compressor.

Quick, accurate and comes in a neat carry case.

Yours for about £30.

I have a digital 12v compressor thingy too i keep in the car. Bought it for £16?

Check it every now and then.. 3-4 weeks..? Whenever I look at my car for more than 1 min lol :giggle:

I check mine every week (now 8 tyres!) and always when the tyres are cold, not been moved at all! Its worth checking the spares every month

:+1:

I carry a foot pump in the car just incase I get a slow punture, or find my spare is flat when I need it (comes in handy if needed by anyone else at work, etc, as well).

My spare gets an outing each year, for the MOT :giggle:

Carry an old tyre gauge - circa the 70's, and an electric tyre pump - so I'm immune to the excessive tyre pump charges .

I've got a digital gauge and one of those cheapo 12v compressors that fit's neatly down the side of the spare wheel.
