Mufflerectomy - Done!

Featured Replies

I got fed up with the little rust piles every morning where I park, duly falling from the slightly rotted back box. So decided today was the day and had the 'mufflerectomy' done.

I've looked at the likes of Milltek and Blue Flame and they are very nice, however on a diesel I really don't see the need in fancy pipework, so in place of the rear box is now one straight piece of pipe, straight to a tailpipe.

I have left the CAT in place, as I didn't want a vast increase in noise and they are not particularly restrictive anyway.

As for noise - a nice burble on start up, but once running sounds pretty much like standard. It stays this way really until you give it the beans, especially above 3000rpm, then you get a lovely deep sound, most un-diesel like! Not stupidly loud at all. All for the very reasonable price of £65 and custom made within the hour

For those of you who are not sure about this, come and have a listen and then make your verdict! Video's on the way tomorrow.

that ll teach me lol

Sounds like my old one, until i took out the cat ;-)

have a click on the link in my signature, compares standard to back box removal :-)

As said on PM... sounds nice..!

I wonder what it will sound like if you have a bigger bore when you demuffle it (or decat). any guesses?

  • Author

Probably not much different, its pretty deep as it is!

What diameter of pipe did you use?

  • Author

Same diameter as the standard pipe, at a guess 2.25"?

Think its a 2", thinking of 2.5 if it'll make any difference, because I've heard that a few uprated it from cat back of 2.5 sounds lovely.

  • Author

2.5" may sound lovely, but for a Fabia with say circa 170bhp, is that size really necessary? That is a whole different debate however.

If you were going from cat-back then you would need a lot more pipework. I just wanted to remove the back box, so a straight pipe was duly fitted in its place, also the most cost effective way of doing it.

does sound nice! was thinking of doing this also, might well do so now after hearing that! might make the 'tailpipe trim' a twin like the milltek for a change emoticon-0148-yes.gif

then again on 2nd thoughts the oval does still look nice emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

That sounds great for what you paid, tempting, but I promised myself not to mod the vRS too much...

out of interest, who did the pipework?

Jake

Jake

A company that is local to me called Powercraft Engineering, been around a fair few years but have just moved to a new bigger premises in Torquay.

  • 3 months later...

I know this is an old post but does anyone know if I was to lose the back box and add a de-cat pipe would I encounter any problems with back pressure? and in turn a loss of performance?

I recently read the following article here which kind of makes sense but I was just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience of this mod? I am sure I seen a post last month where someone had a 'straight through' exhaust but cant find it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, John
