Took the car in today and, as expected, they've called and said they can't find a fault.

However I did a printout explaining how many miles I've driven and the fuel used and they've accepted that 32MPG from a CR VRS is a problem :)

I suppose it's a question of waiting now, hopefully not too long.

Update:

I picked the car up last Thursday and I'm told the EGR valve was cleaned out, not sure if this will make 20MPG difference...

After brimming the tank I'm close to half a tank used with only 180 miles travelled, it seems that the problem isn't fixed.

I'm getting close to wanting to reject the car and move on.

So you probably don't want to hear that I filled up again this evening after covering about 370 miles since Saturday morning (last fill up) and had a range of 260 miles on the maxidot? About 280 miles of that was motorway, the rest town and country lane driving

Definitely sounds like your car has a real drinking problem to me, even when I'm driving mostly in town I still get about 400 miles between fill ups and I rarely let the gauge get to the red... I also have a heavier right foot than is ideal for economy driving

I think the problem has been identified.

The car is also making white smoke at times which leads me to believe excess fuel is being injected and not burnt, one plausible explanation is that the injectors are worn.

I took the car to the dealer today and, despite the rain and spray, was able to show one of the service techs the smoke problem and they've agreed to look at the injectors next week.

Hopefully I'll be able to report > 500 miles to a tank in a week or two.

Hi Lou

Hope they sort the car out for you.

I was getting about 400 miles from a full tank, not at all what I expected.

Went to the dealer within 4 weeks, who were very helpful when I showed them an excel sheet with what I had spent on fuel.

The car reported no faults. I do about 40miles a day on dual carriageway all at 60+miles/hour.

The car was "forced" into DPF regen and the garage changed the oil at my insistance and ever since then I get 500-550 until the maxidot states refuel.

Not sure if any of that helps you out.

Keep us all updated.

I've only just bought my car but mostly town driving and country lanes I seem to be getting about 38mpg, although mine is a PD. I need to do a motorway run to see what it will do then.

I hope you get your injectors sorted. Plenty of places will rig your injectors up in a test rig. They can the. Measure the cubic centremeters of fuel sprayed over 1 minute, and the spray pattern. Had it done on my boat injectors and found one was flowin at less than half the rate it should have. Had them cleaned and they were back to as new performance.

Update:

I was hoping it would be this simple but after having the car for over a week they're no closer to a solution.

I was called yesterday to ask if I was the original owner of the car and if I'd ever mis-fuelled it; I'm not and I haven't. There is no estimate of when the car will be fixed.

Sadly I get the feeling that if my car was out of warranty they would have attempted open-wallet surgery on me.

It's understandable to have problems, these things happen, but to not have a clue how to fix it takes some doing!

I won't be buying another Skoda.

I've just had my petrol light come on last night for the first time and the clock was showing 400 miles with 50 left to go before empty.

I only drive 3 miles each way to work and the car doesn't even warm up by the time I arrive and I do like to use the acceleration

You're in Hampshire, pull the injectors out and get them to a marine diesel injector service centre. There's loads of places all along the south coast that specialise in diesel fuel injection systems. They'll be easy to take out and usually only cost £15 per injector to service.

I don't think it's that simple.

Skoda have had the car for a week and I assume the injectors would have been the first thing they looked at?

Also the car is under warranty, I want it fixed under warranty!

I could be looking at close to 700miles on tank :) it is my first full tank since I bought the car and I am blown away with the economy. I have done 225miles on the first quarter tank and maxidot says I have 465 to go.

I had a 55 plate Ambiente estate for 2 years and only managed 600 on a full tank, once!!

I have been used to a Mitsubishi L200 that struggled to get to 30+ mpg and after 126K of careful driving I think this has been transfered to the Skoda, I don't know how long the feather weight right foot will last though :S

Hope you get yours fixed soon Lou

Panda? You're comparing MPG figures with a Panda?

IMO and TBH if normal driving doesn't yield 47-50 in a CR and you are really THAT bothered.. why are you driving a vRS

Just as valid to talk about the Panda as the 500 surely?

Update:

After having the car for over a week Skoda have finally authorised the dealer to replace the DPF under warranty.

I should get the car back on Thursday but won't know if the problem is sorted until I've done over 400 miles on a tank!

Update:

I picked up the car today and, hopefully, it's fixed.

The car no longer blows smoke at low revs and it seems to pull a lot harder than before. The dealer changed the DPF under warranty.

So, if your diesel car starts blowing smoke and the MPG drops to around 30, this might be the cause.

Note that in my case the trip computer read around 50MPG even though it was returning much worse economy, I had to measure fuel consumption the old fashioned way to prove the problem.

Once I get >450 miles to a tank of diesel I'll consider it resolved.

  • 4 weeks later...

Final Update:

After running a full tank of fuel through i got to 520 miles with around 30 miles range remaining when I filled up!

Happy days, the new DPF seems to have done the trick.

The only question now is should I go back to the supplying dealer and ask them for a contribution to the excess fuel I burnt in the 2 months before it was fixed!

On that point, you can adjust the 'fuzzy logic' for the range aspect of the trip computer, using VAG-COM/VCDS. There's a guide on here somewhere for it. Not done it for the Octy yet, will try to get round to it over the Christmas break.

I'd say mine is a bit fuzzy at the moment:

I don't think I'll squeeze 645 miles from a tank though!

In fact earlier today the total estimated range (trip + range) was 670!
