Which tyre offers the best performance for price?

Featured Replies

Really sorry about starting another tyre thread, but i'l looking to get some new front tyres for the end of November.

I've tried many brands in the past with mixed results.

Michelin

Pros: Outstanding grip in wet & dry

Cons: Most expensive tyre. Doesnt last that long.

Nankang:

Pros: Cheap, Very hard wearing.

Cons. Average grip in wet & dry.

Kumho:

Pros: Cheap, Good grip in dry.

Cons: Wear quickly. Poor grip in Wet.

Pirelli:

Pros: Good overall grip

Cons: Wear quickly. Slightly expensive.

Uniroyal Rain Sport:

Pros: Good grip in dry, Outstanding grip in Wet. Cheap.

Cons: Wear very quickly.

Now, i saw a trye chart of some sorts a few months ago. It had reviews of many different tyres that people had used, it listed Uniroyal as being one of the best. Howver, it was one particular model - the other model of Uniroyal performed poorly - very high wear rate.

I tried searching for this chart in the forums but cant find it - Can anyone point in in the right direction?

So, to sum up:

Which tyre offeres the best performance for the price.

I dont really want to spend more than £70 per tyre but i dont want to feel i'm driving on ice when its wet (my current Kumhos are like this)

Cheers

Berry.

I swear by my Toyo Proxes.

pros: GRIP

Con's : Loud and wear fairly fast if you drive heavy.

but fairly cheap and awesome when it come to grip :)

These?

Not bad - got some good reviews. Might ring around for some prices!

Hows wet grip - i do a lot of country road driving (Worcester to Hereford) & the roads are a knightmare in the wet - need lots of good grip.

Cheers for that.

i always start here

& then see what fellow members have to say about my choices

Cheers

PS

the 4 Rainsports 2 that went on the Furbie last winter seem to be wearing OK, despite what some tyre suppliers said. TBH i don't thrash 'em too often & the ride quality is much better than the Conti's they replaced

I swear by the Parada's but they arent known for there wet/winter abilities... lol

I'm not sure where you got the info about the Michelins from, but they are probably the longest lasting tyre available. They are also best for fuel economy and they win an awful lot of tyre tests.

Cheap tyres are false economy. Without good tyres almost everything else is compromised.

I had a new set of Michelins fitted on the front when i got my VRS in 2006. They were brilliant tyres but they did seem to wear down a little too quickly to justify the price. May be its my driving style!

ahh-hhaa

This is what i was looking for.... clicky

cheers Cavdad!

I've got Maxxis all round on mine at the moment - they wouldn't have been my 1st choice of tyre but they were all brand new when I got the car - but nearly 20000 miles later they've still got plenty of tread left and haven't given me a single problem - driving in the ice and snow last winter they were fine and they are pretty quiet too although road feedback could be better. I think the general opinion on here in relation to the millions and millions of tyre threads all asking the same question is to go for SportContact2's if you want a premium brand or Toyo's or Rainsports if you're looking in the midrange. When the Maxxis wear out I'll be getting Rainsports.

+1 for F1 Eagle GSD3s - old but a true classic tyre for wet and dry grip! :)

quite an interesting read that link is emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Barum Bravuris for me, but have been superseded by the Barum Bravuris 2

Pro's - Very hard wearing (40,000 miles), good grip in dry and wet, made by Conti's

Con's - A bit loud, Peoples reactions when you say what they are.

wot - no Vredesteins? - can't beat them in my experience...

Just went to enquire about getting 2 new rainsport2 tyres and told they have been discontinued?

I see now uniroyal sell rainmax... is this the replacement for the rainsports?

I recently tried Toyo R1R's, albeit a bit of a pricey tire, they're awesome in the wet and dry, mainly down to the quite soft compound, but i did get through them in 6 months.. :(

Goodyear F1 GSD3:

Pros

Great in the wet and dry. Elegant tread design (IMHO). Not too bad for tyre wear.

Cons

Useless in snow/sluch ice (same as most summer tyres). Don't like the cold either.

I've not long had some T1Rs fitted.

Awsome grip, especially in the wet.

The compound must be mega soft though- even in the wet and cold today, the tyres are still pretty warm to the touch after a relatively sedate drive.

With Gary on that one. Seem pretty decent on the whole, feel fine in the wet too, except when pulling away quickly. Does seem to suffer from soft side walls, can give an oddly floating feeling at times but for the price I like. Nice looking sidewall too IMO.

'Wrong' speed rating - I know 'V' rated tyres are more than adequate for a vRS but there are others on here that will disagree :giggle: .

I'll be p'd off if Rainsports are being discontinued - Camskill's website says they're due in stock in December.

T1r Proxes! Outstanding tyre, On my second set, First were 16's now on 17's

First set done 14000 miles with the fronts on the wear indicators, Rears on 5mm!

Can't grumble at that!

Interestin topic,

I have Avon ZZ3's on mine and seem really good!

I love my proxes for their quietness !! Are your on back to front ?

i run avon's too

:)

my dad told me to get em, he had an evo 4 back in the day and tried every combo of tire, he said nothing touched the avons

Just shows how subjective these things are.

I have Falken 452's on my BMW and they are excellent so wanted to get a set for the wifes Fabia. They don't do the 452 in Fabia size so I thought I'd take a punt on the 912.

In my opinion they are fine in the dry but awful to the point of being dangerous in the wet. Even the wife commented on the understeer going around wet roundabouts. Avoid in my opinion.
