Full Beam - not so great

Featured Replies

Hi fellas,

When I was a young student Halogen lamps were the new aftermarket fit for downmarket cars (what else can a student aford?) and I substituted H4s for the original yellow candles in Cibie lamps that replaced the original Lucas sealed beam gloworms. On country roads, with no oncoming traffic, I could switch main and dip beam on together and the H4s stood it, and didn't burn out, and the light on the road was brilliant (by the standards of the day).

Don't know if modern H4s would do that, even if the CANBUS could be persuaded to allow it. I can't understand why the Yeti has H4's instead of separate lamps for main and dip beam, it seems a backward step to me on a vehicle that is more likely to be driven in difficult conditions than, say, an Octavia.

I couldn't afford Xenons on the Yeti I have ordered so it will be Osram Nightbreakers (or similar) for me, but it would have been nice to have near illumination of the kerb while using main beam. Whatever happened to a well aimed spotlight set to illuminate the left hand kerb? Is it another no no from Brussels or just the problem of finding somewhere to fix it now we don't have good strong metal bumpers anymore?

If we can have fog lights that look round the corner, why not a fog light that can also act as a spotlight aimed at the kerb?

O.K. I'm a bit off topic, but its a rainy Friday afternoon and I'm clearing the garage and I'm bored.

When you've worked out an easy way to fix them to the front let me know, as I have a nice pair of Hella's already and awaiting.

same here, left over from my old rally days with u guessed it skoda's...what we need is a nice big chrome bullbar :D ....

EEUURRGGHH!! I hate chrome bull bars!! Thank God they are now illegal.

Ditto. My old Rapid had a lovely set of Hella 2000's that actually came off John Haigland's works Group B Estelle the year the Grp B cars were banned. It was very useful working for the Work's Service crew!!

I think I "might" have worked out how to fit a bracket for some small (5") lights, bolted to the bonnet strike plate area. Depends whether I can get some strong but thin steel strip that will fit under the bonnet edge when it is down. Lights will have to be mounted pendant style, but should be quite stable that way.

Set of the Osram's have now arrived, but not having a garage and then having to work this week, I haven't had time to fit them yet. Hopefully it will be a quiet shift at work on Sunday, so I might find time then (if it isn't raining!!)

Fred,

most manufacturers that aren't fitting HID's are using H4 bulbs still. Using twin fitment H7 bulbs needs a much bigger light enclosure with seperate reflectors. So styling is really the reason to stick with H4's!

You still could have the spot light on the left, shining along the kerb, as long as there is another lamp on the otherside. Some of the road rally boys still use this set-up, although most use 2 driving pattern lights, but agreed the biggest problem is finding somewhere solid to mount them.

Interestingly the 'projector' headlamps on my Roomster, and I presume Fabia as well, have an H7 (single filament) bulb with a 'shutter' that drops down to provide the cutoff for dip beam.

It works perfectly well IMHO.

just been out to collect daughter( schoolbus broke down in middle of nowewhere)...those lights are abysmal...utter ****e tbh'....main beam no better, but ok if u hold flash...my vespa headlight is better :giggle:

Osram Nightbreaker's finally fitted this week, and today was the first time I've driven at night with, and I am very pleased. They seem to give a much whiter light and the range does appear to be greater. I also noted that the light seems to start closer to the car, and that the "cut-off" is more accurate.

Also noted that the bulbs I took out were Osram's, but with different markings. Now does this mean that Skoda are fitting Osram's as standard, or did the garage change them both in the past?

Fitting on the driver's side was reasonably easy, once I'd worked out how the clip went back on to hold the bulb, but it is a bit tight on the passenger side, but not impossible.

It would be SOP that things like the bulbs would be sourced from two or three approved vendors, so that some would be Osram, some Philips, etc.. The bulbs are probably already fitted in the headlights by the manufacturer of the lights, probably Valeo, Magna or some other tier 1 supplier.

Hi Graham

You seem to have managed to fit the new bulbs without removing the headlamp unit - if so I'm impressed, especially on the passenger side.

I can only just get my hand in, no hope of seeing what I'm doing.

Fred,

the passenger side was done mostly by feel.

Tha's why I did the other one first!!

Graham, did you used to be a gyaenacologist? :p

Oy, watch it sprog! :D

sorry dad

'ere, dad... why is my hair white and curly?? :giggle:

Well I got the Osram Nightbreakers in eventually and my big chubby hands will recover in a few days.

Had to take the fusebox cover off on the passenger side and the exposed screws are cruel.

Had to get NightBreakers fitted as I have to negotiate a few unlit lanes in a Welsh valley this coming weekend and the weather forecast is not good.

The lamps that came out were GE made in Hungary.

My Dogcam snake camera came in handy for seeing what was going on.

Thanks for the advice.

P.S. my wife might have found it easier - her hands are smaller and she used to be a midwife....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Sanctuary awaits, should you become stranded amongst the sheep, in Merthyr Cynog - but first you gotta find it (just up the road from Upper Chapel and the phone exchange in the hedge)......

Hi

We used to holiday in Wales, and I learned at least three things very quickly:

1) when you see a bend warning road sign on a Welsh road it really means it.

2) sheep think they are immortal.

3) a dead sheep is worth twice as much as a live one to the farmer

My wife is a tea addict, so if I'm ever passing M C again I shall seek you out.

She also likes singing and has no trouble with Welsh phonetics when singing - not that she speaks Welsh.

Regards

Fred

round here, the locals, if they dont know the words - they take off their shoes - and hum!!

Well if you are on the A470 between Llani and Cardiff on Saturday morning (snow being willing) and see a VERY dirty Muscavado SM give me a wave.

...another sheep thing learned in Scotland when touring on a motorbike. Lambs will always run to their mothers even if that means running in front of a moving vehicle.

I must say that I find the headlights on the Yeti pretty abysmal as have many others

Here. Given that the bulb in halogen lamps merely provides a

Point light source, it is the poor design of the reflector that is to blame.

This is unforgivable in a lamp so large and wish they were as

Good as the lamps in my wifes smart car which are fab.
