Speed camera/mobile camera detectors

Featured Replies

Hey all,

After many years using an old snooper system that only downloads the location of fixed gatso's, I want something a little better. I cover a fair few miles on the daily run and can be pretty much anywhere in the country at times. Is there any one best system/brand that can detect mobile cameras and hand helds without the pain of updating it every day via tyhe net?

I've been looking at these:

And then there's lazer jammers?! Not something I wanna get caught with.

Any pro's and cons from anyone using soemthing similar would be appreciated! I guess a subscription comes as standard on these things now? :S

Excellent value for money systems, most have free lifetime updates, many once a week. Easy to use and update.

I have used them for many years.

I find the big dial in the dash that tells me my speed a great help. That and an awarness of the prevailing limit.

If you have an iPhone, the pocketgpsworld speed camera app is excellent.

What about one of THESE no need to update it at all

If you check the Novus website you will find that speed camera detection is only a minor point of their units, they do not detect radar cameras. An accurate GPS speedo and road hazard warnings are very useful.

When was the last time you had your speedo calibrated.

I have a Road Angel Connected with Laser Add on

Up dates it's self Via a Sim card and you can send it a Text message's to be read by the driver

Shows speed at the location, what type of camera it is and your speed, the time and direction your travelling in

That's a nice little unit.......any experience using one?

Cheers for the info guys. The iPhone app is no good, unless they do a similar one for android OS phones. I've got a Galaxy S. B)

I use RadarDroid on my Desire, I have to manually dowload the database and import it, but it's not a big job once a week...

There is another app called EZCam which I haven't tried but gets good reviews, but it supports average speed camer zones too (RadarDroid doesn't, it just flags them as fixed speed cameras) . Again, it's a manual download and import for the database

Guy got done big time last week I think it was for using a jammer so I wouldn't get one if I was you

Thanks. Interesting.

Couldn't agree more, linked in with a bit of cruise control and common sense

Maybe the Road Safety Partnerships should have a common motto :-

"Drive like an arse, pay through the nose"

Has a certain ring to it :)

I've never been keen on cruise control, as there's always traffic of varying speeds on the road, and I feel less in control.

I find that if I allow a decent amount of braking space that buffers a certain amount of traffic speed variation and it's easy enough to press resume once the traffic is back up to speed. Slowing down by braking obviously switches it off.

The reason the driver in Norfolk was able to be prosecuted was because he didn't have a legal reason for having a laser reflector/transmitter on his car. My garage doors are activated by my 'automated approach' system which is switched on permanently and is not intended to do anything other than open my garage doors. If it just happens to inactivate laser speed guns, then the police should get themselves something else that cannot be accidentally confused. I have had police officers inspect my system at home and they had to accept my explanation and agree that I was not intentionally interfering with their equipment. Ergo - no possible prosecution.

I'm getting cruise contol fitted soon, with average speed cameras and 50 limits on motorways during invisable road works i need it. A few months ago when going though road works my speed went from 50 to 65 when i was looking at the road and not just my speedo

It does seem counterproductive that when I get worried about speed cameras, I spend far too much time watching my speedo, thus decreasing the time I am watching the road.

I wouldn't try that one in court. Honestly. The prosecution have heard all these excuses before and they usually have an even more smart-alec response.

My defensive driving instructor recommended driving in a lower gear so you can hear the engine better. 30mph sounds a lot louder in 2nd gear. 50mph in 3rd? Whatever else happens, you won't be speeding, I can assure you!

I'm not advocating speeding, just making an observation.

On the whole I rigorously keep to speed limits, particularly in urban areas where there are pedestrians. On the other hand, I have caught my speed edge up on a clear, sunny day driving down a long, straight road with no pedestrians through the highlands. You are travelling with the traffic and then realise you are up to 80. Then you see a speed camera van in a layby, trying to hide behind some bins

Only thing with that is you use more fuel and in the end it'll cost more than the £60 fine and 3 points lol

You don't actually use a lot more fuel and nothing's more expensive than losing your licence.
